In this video I demonstrate the Analyzer and Recorder features of the Rigol DP832A. I use it to see if there is a difference in power consumption on playing a WAV vs a FLAC music file on a portable music player (HiFiMan 901).
Both music file formats are lossless, however the FLAC is compressed and apparently can take more CPU cycles (and power) to decompress before playing.

You should try controlling the PSU with labview. I have the two channel version of the TTI pl303 with data connection, and in my opinion that setup is the perfect PSU setup for a hobbyist(except for the price). Analog control of the PSU when it's manually operated, and logging, automatic adjustments ++ when it's being controlled from labview :) In labview you design your own control program, so there is almost no limitations on what it can do.

Flack may need a bit more processing power but that is probably done by a dedicated hardware not software and if that dose not have a power down option to save power there will be no difference. The wav files are larger so the player needs to make more reads from the storage media thus using in theory a bit more power. And the play and decompression will probably be still a very small fraction of the total power consumption. Probably the LCD backlit takes a much larger part and even if there is a saving it will not help with battery life there will be no noticeable difference. The power supply is nice. For data acquisition you should look at my next project after I finalise the Solar BMS. It is not clear defined at the moment but it will be something with 8 x 24bit ADC channels and a bluetooth for data transfer to a tablet or PC. Maybe there will be a 320x240 color LCD optional. It is still early I will have more details as I will think about. You should also soon get your Solar BMS maybe you find some time for a short test. I just build a few samples and need to finalise some software modules.

That's a good demonstration of the feature and an interesting test subject. Did you ask Rigol to add the missing energy consumption in a future firmware?

Please, please. Do a video on that Rigol 832A how it performs on a +12V/-12V and 5V setup under load. I am curious to know how well it operates on a 2 amps load on each channel in regards to noise, when all channels are in use (think opamp). Anyway for this video, a big thumbs up.

The lossy vs lossless vs. compressed-audio power-consumption issue has been an ongoing debate in the audiophile community for some time, Kudos for tackling the issue, head-on, in such a empirically scientific manner! It would be super cool if you could follow up using FLIR examination of various PCB chips, while the device plays WAV, FLAC, MP3, etc .... this, IMO, will reveal important information about the audiophile issue. Thanks!

One more thing to try is put o'scope probes on various power pins of ICs on the PCB. If you search Google images for the HiFiMan 901, you'll get a few inside photos like: img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/gameguytw/SOUND/hifiman/901_45.jpg I think most modern digital o'scopes can "record" -- so you can perform a similar data analysis as with the DP832A.

One more thing part 2 ;-) The batt. terminals "see" the full power load of the player (all ICs, LCD display, etc). So, where you measured (battery terminals) may not be the ideal place to gauge FLAC vs WAV power usage. There are caps and regulators for each important IC ... further putting the batt. terminals at a "remove" from where the action is (its CPU/decoder IC, etc) .

mjlorton , did you try with different flac compression? Because, IMHO, a flac with extremely high compression (7/8) need more power than a normal flac compression (4/5)

Hi, great video. I also have the DP832A. But the instrument has an internal problem. Internal LM317 too hot and crashes

contact Rigol, they will repair it for free, it's a known bug and later hardware revisions are already fixed

Why analyzer instead of analyser ?

Right .... Is there someone off camera that is always asking you a Question ? Actual / Actually ..... as opposed to all of the phoney stuff ? Obviously .... If it is all so obvious, why do you have to continually point it out to us ? Somewhat interesting video. I just get so caught up in your continuous use of the above, that it is hard to focus on the topic. (I know ... don't watch).
