Sole surviving Ex-LSWR T9 Class - 30120, owned by the National Railway Museum and on long-term loan to the Swanage Railway under the care of the 563 Locomotive Group, has left the Isle of Purbeck as it heads to the Flour Mill workshop in the Forest of Dean.
The 563 Locomotive Group, fresh from the successful overhaul of LSWR T3 Class - 563, have made no secret of their desire to return 30120 to steam. 563, owned for many years by the National Railway Museum, was deaccessioned in 2017 with full ownership being transferred to the Swanage Railway Trust. Following a meticulous overhaul, 563 returned to service in the Isle of Purbeck during 2023; 78 years since the T3 had last steamed. With the return of 563 only strengthening the relationship between the National Railway Museum and the Swanage Railway Trust and its 563 Locomotive Group, the latter has been able to green light its “Project 120”, after reaching a new agreement with the NRM. “Project 120” will cover an initial assessment of 30120 to determine its condition, ahead of a commitment to return the T9 to steam for further service on the Swanage Railway.
30120 arrived on the Swanage Railway in 2017, in need of repair, and an agreement in place with the NRM for the SR to carry out the necessary work. Once the repairs had been conducted, and the NRM satisfied with the work, the T9 entered service on the Dorset branch line, becoming a popular performer in the Isle of Purbeck until being withdrawn in 2020 on the expiry of its boiler ticket. The success story of 563 has been instrumental in developing the working relationship between the Swanage Railway Trust and the NRM, for “Project 120” to take place, and the chance to see the T9 power through the Dorset countryside in the future.

Thanks for more great filming and lots of useful news about the project. Fingers crossed that the overhaul will be as much of a success as for the T3.

I saw No. 30120 down at Swanage Station back in February. I am glad that I got the chance to see her before she left the railway.

That would be really interesting to see both the T3 & T9 steaming together side by side one day to compare the different between the only two LSWR 4-4-0 tender locos.

I saw her going down the M4 earlier (on a low loader before people think im mad). Looked magnificent even without her tender.

Was she perhaps going to a chip shop (obviously not but imagine she was on the M4 going 60mph)

Good to see the Greyhound out of her trap, still a bit of a stunner. Now there's the long wait to see the reverse of this film!!!!! Thanks Matthew, makes a change from chasing trains?!!!😂😂😂😂

Hopefully sooner rather than later, but that all depends on donations. A brief period of change.

I do hope it'll be in green when it comes back. Even better if they removed the superheater and brought the smokebox back to original, but I don't suppose that's likely to happen
@iankemp1131
@iankemp1131 Месяц назад
The plan is to put it in SR olive green which will be great, much more picturesque than even clean black. It will stay superheated. I must admit I greatly prefer its original appearance with the short smokebox, but the superheating turned a very good engine into a great one for its size, hence their longevity.

As in the video description, 30120 is heading to the Flour Mill workshop, as part of 563LG's "Project 120".

Two things I would like to say here: 1. Can’t wait to see 120 doublehead with 563. 2 (and this has nothing to do with the video at all yet I’m still putting it in regardless). I really wish the T3 was loaned to Swanage instead of being donated.

@iankemp1131 Месяц назад
Yes, the T3 donation was controversial, but without it we wouldn't be seeing 563 running again. It was a high risk project and kudos to the Swanage and Flour Mill engineers for getting the engine back into service after a 75 year gap. Remember the millions that the NRM had to fork out to get Flying Scotsman working again. Otherwise, heritage railways would have to go for safe options like BR Standard locos and the historic engines at the NRM would just be on static display or hidden away in the background. The NRM and Swanage also made sure in the contract that the T3 could never be sold on for profit - not that one ever makes a profit from steam locos (again remembering that 4472 bankrupted three owners over the years). Makes one wonder what else one would like to see working again if the chance arose. Maybe the LYR 2-4-2 tank showing why it was the mainstay of their express services for decades?

If she is returned to steam lets hope she has either LSWR or a Southern railway livery instead of that horrible BR black.

@rowejon
@rowejon Месяц назад
@@dominicf8039 That probably wouldn't be appropriate. I understand the locos were first painted LSWR sage green, not the lighter green that the T# carries.
@TheSouthernerYTChannel
@TheSouthernerYTChannel Месяц назад
@@dominicf8039 563 currently wears LSWR Drummond green.
@TheSouthernerYTChannel
@TheSouthernerYTChannel Месяц назад
@rowejon When they first appeared, they did carry LSWR Drummond green, as 563 currently wears. But this was only during their pre-rebuilt state, so it wouldn't be authentic for a T9. 30120 was only rebuilt into its current form with a superheater after the 1923 grouping. So no LSWR livery is authentic for it in that sense. However, given it carried LSWR Urie green in the 1960s, that could be authentically replicated.
