Tabernacle Choir Introduces New Announcer for Weekly Broadcast

The new producer, principal writer and presenter of The Tabernacle at Temple Square’s “Music and the Spoken Word” weekly broadcast is ready to take the lead role. Derrick Porter replaces Lloyd Newell, who has been the voice of the Choir for 34 years.
Porter lives in Utah with his wife and six children. “This came as a complete shock and surprise to us when we received this invitation from President Nelson to serve in this way and manner,” he said.

I’m going to miss Lloyd Newell on Sunday mornings. His messages, his delivery and his beautiful voice have uplifted me along with the beautiful choir music every Sunday. I will miss him.

I love watching Music and the Spoken Word! Part of the reason that I love it is because of Lloyd Newell's messages that he presents and the calming way he presents it. I want to thank him for his service and dedication to this calling. I welcome brother Porter to this new calling and I am excited for the Newell's new adventure in serving the people of Los Angeles.

Such a wonderful communicator. His presentations are sheer genius and I say this as a retired pastor who has preached for over 35 years. Lloyd Newell and the spoken word have been a great bonding experience for my 95 dad and me for the past several years. he loves seeing that the spoken word is in it's 95th year and loves, as i did, to listen to the inspiring messages given by now President Newell. many blessings to you, President.

Through years, I've listened to the Tabernacle Choir and find it a true blessing. As Mr. Newell and Mr. Porter both start new chapters of lives, the message remains the same. BTW - I am not a member of the LDS church.

My dad layed carpet in his apartment about 35 years ago. Lloyd had a big painting or picture of Willie Nelson, and my dad, Boyd Price, is a fan of Willie Nelson, and Lloyd had just moved into the apartment, and my dad assumed that it belonged to the previous people that lived in the apartment, so my dad asked about it, and Lloyd said that that was his picture and told my dad that he is a fan of Willie Nelson.
