In this video, Sulekh Ruparell (Creator of Tabla Works), has demonstrated the parallel Tabla concepts of General and Relative speed. You can follow his blog at www.tabla.co.uk/blog/
He has also created a tabla course in 10 simple lessons for beginners that can be downloaded at www.tabla.co.uk. The first lesson is absolutely free.
General speed or 'Laya' in Tabla is where a note or composition is played either played Vilambit (slow), Madya (medium) or Drut (fast).
Relative speed is where the underlying beat remains the same but the number of Bol (notes) played against each beat is varied. So for example, if we played 3 notes within the space of a single beat, we would be playing at relatively triple the underlying tempo.
This concept of relative speed is sometimes referred to as 'Layakari'.

Very Clear explanation, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I like the sound of Tabla and use tabla sampler when I play the keyboard. Can you shed some light on how can I follow a tabla players underlying speed? what to watch for, the right hand in your case when you played Na in single double and triple and quadruple in a daya/dahina drum?

Hello sir. Thank you for the clear explanation on this speed. I’m having difficulties to speak on bols which have gaps (-) in between bols. Can you make a video on how to practice bols?

Mr Sulekh ! 2nd half of Kaharwa , It is ...Na Ke Dhin Na......Ke played by left hand index finger. Its very important.

In textbook Tabla playing you are absolutely correct. However in practice Tabla players will often substitute the Ke bol for Ghe so that is the reason I have chosen to play the variation. I hope that explains why I player as I did.

Thank you sir for your video. I have one question, Having practiced a kayda/palta on a certain bpm, should one try to play the double tempo at same bpm or practice single tempo on larger bpm? which will be more effective?

It's a good question. It really depends on the way in which you prefer to practice so there is no right and wrong answer to this. Personally, I would normally try to practice enough to play double speed and if that means dropping the single speed slightly to accommodate it, then I tend to do so. The other option is to work backwards which is to say that you simply practice getting faster and once you reach your new comfortable single speed, half that tempo and then you can practice single and double.

Thank you. Excellent lesson. So the way you tell what the underlying speed is, is to listen to say the tambura? Thank you.

Thank you for the feedback. The lehera (in this case using my phone app) is always used in Tabla recitals to set initial underlying tempo. In a live setting, normal instruments for playing Lehera on are harmonium and sarangi.

no not at all.

No. In fact Tabla players of the past had to, I believe, be particularly strong in order to take account of the fact that there was little or no amplification when they played.

Would very much love to have a go at playing the Tabla...considering, it’s my most favourable instrument along with the Sitar. I listen to a lot of Indian music....i can relate to all kinds! Bollywood, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Devotional ( Bhai Joginder Singh Ji Riar ) being my most favourite singing artist for Devotional. I’ll have to have a look and see how much they cost...and where to buy? Have you ever come across any woman....expertly playing this great instrument? Actually, I’ve just looked at 1 brilliant Girlie Tabla player on RU-vid; in the name of Reshma Pandit. I do have that talent to learn to play the Tabla; it’s just a shame that i don’t have the opportunity?
