In this video, we take a look at Data Guide, a new feature designed to help consumers discover how to use dashboards while at the same time using explain data and data change radar to surface insight from the dashboard.

Tableau Release Notes
Data Guide provides helpful information about a dashboard and insights about the data behind it. Data Guide allows dashboard creators to provide more explanatory context for end users-like descriptions and links to resources-directly in the dashboard. And Data Guide automatically surfaces insights powered by Explain Data and Data Change Radar to help users find outliers, identify notable data changes, and learn about explanations for a mark. Explain the Viz (powered by Explain Data) identifies outlier measures and potential key drivers behind them. Data Change Radar (Tableau Cloud only) tracks values in your dashboard over time and automatically flags values outside of the normal patterns as data refreshes.

Great explanation. I see the potential value in this feature now. You said you’d like the description given when publishing a workbook to be the same as the Data Guide description. Are they not at different levels? One is for a workbook and the other is for a view (dashboard/worksheet). Is the authoring of Data Guides available in Tableau Desktop?

Yes it’s available on desktop as well. I wanted the workbook level description to be the same as the publish description

you can deactivate (hide) the data guide for every user on site level. Under site settings (Tableau Server/Cloud) in the generals tab scroll down and you will find the option for hiding.

Word on the street is that the setting for Data Guide has been set to off by default on Tableau Cloud (Online) and users can switch it on. community.tableau.com/s/question/0D58b0000AEiHyzCQF/can-you-turn-off-data-guide-at-the-site-level-in-tableau-cloud also this idea in the community by a colleague.

To my understanding, the data guide sends the data and fields to a service outside of the server, how do you config it when using server?

Are you using tableau server or tableau online? On server it’s only possible to change the setting so it doesn’t show up by default and that’s in account settings. For tableau online / cloud it doesn’t load by default anymore

Hi Tim. We are having a situation where the Data Guide button is grey out and a blank section for it is on the right side of the screen. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off when it is in that state for a dashboard. Can you point me in the right direction for how to turn it off when it is in this state? Thanks, Jeremy

Okay. Looking at it more, it seems to happen when the view is a story with dashboards instead of just a view with a dashboard. Does it not work with the story views?

Are you on Tableau cloud or server? I think the default settings are different on either platform. I hadn't tried it in a Story. I barely use that feature. Hence it escaped me entirely. Depending on your defaults, I would expect the data guide to load regardless of story or dashboard as the data guide sits outside of the dashboard, so as yous witch stories, the data guide would change. I'll try a test with Stories too.

@@TableauTim We are using a Tableau server. The issue is this view gets accessed by guest users and when that happens it is just greyed out. It wouldn't be as bad if the user had a way to turn it off instead of having the view with a blank section on the right side. Thanks for looking into the stories.
