I had a few requests to show the integration between my workbench and table saw. Quite a few woodworkers use the excellent Dewalt DWE7840. This is one way to build a bench around that saw for better dust collection, outfeed and a nicer overall experience.

I have the DW7845, older model 10" Dewalt table saw and it took me a few different configurations to finally come up with a decent solution to dust control. The main problem we face is getting enough suction to the base. I ended up using a store-bought funnel made for table saws from my old Craftsman TS. I checked and they are still available online, but easy enough to make too. I enclosed the 3 sides and under the platform, the saw sits on I cut out a large square leaving a 2" ledge where I can still bolt down the TS. Then I attached the large square funnel to the underside of the platform and attach the vacuum hose to it. (I also shortened the hose going to the TS so there is no extra on the floor. That is where you lose a lot of the suction with flexible hose) I made a magnetic cover for the front for easy removal to get at the adjustment on the saw. I also tried the same thing but with a drawer under the saw to catch the dust falling. That worked very well too. I was moving things around when I found the funnel, that is why I tried it after the drawer. Good luck!

Very well thought out setup. You mentioned the miter slots on this saw is horrible. You're right, and it's because the paint rubs off onto the sled runners making it sticky. My solution was to remove the paint from miter slots using acetone. In fact, I removed all of the paint from the entire table saw top, then wet sanded and polished it. It's super slick and disguises the scratches that had accumulated over the years. Best of all, sleds work they should without any binding.

Hey, nice build. I'm intrigued by the addition of the extrusion on the fence. That is an excellent idea! Haven't searched for a video on it, but I can envision how it was done. I have the aluminum extrusion and proper bolts, and the understanding of how much improvement to cut quality it would provide. So, off I go!

I have an older model dewalt table saw and I've started building a design a bit similar to this. in thinking about how I want to handle the dust under the saw, I have considered a trap door in the center of the platform with the weight carried around the frame. I hope it works, though I'm in a garage, which has a bit more allowance for dustiness than what I think looks like a basement shop space
@acanadianwoodworker
@acanadianwoodworker 4 года назад
Trap door is a good idea, I made a downdraft area in the right of the platform, but actually I hardly use it because it requires the extra time of hooking up another vacuum. I just let the dust collect in the enclosure, as you can see. Other ideas I had included a larger downdraft with a sloped 'sink' in the middle, so all the dust would funnel in and self-collect, but that was beyond my fabrication abilities. Have a great time time building your version!

Hi absolutely love this bench and set up. I have the same table saw and was wondering do you get suction from the back as designed and from the bottom? If so do both hose connections pull from the same dust extractor/shop vac? Also do you have any plans you would sell. I think a lot of followers would definitely purchase these from you as a fantastic looking bench. Certainly one of the best i have seen and superb for a DeWalt table saw and integration of the rack and pinion fence in to the worktop 👍👍👍

@acanadianwoodworker
@acanadianwoodworker 4 года назад
Hi David, on my saw a lot of dust blows out the front (and makes the floor slippery and dangerous in the front), so I had to cover it with something. This design has two holes for the on/off, and fence lock. And then a flap to reach in and adjust blade height. After I made it I discovered it was impossible to change the blade angle with the cover on, so I just take it off quickly for that. But basically the end game is just to stop dust blowing out the front.

Amazing... I just built pretty much the exact same set-up... "cut-outs" and all, and hadn't seen your videos yet. Glad to have found your channel and have subscribed. My current issue though is... I ordered 1/2 steel plate after having built the frame (out of steel also) but when the 4' x 8' sheet arrived I found it was only 8mm and "not" 12mm plus... like it's "supposed to be." I'm in The Philippines and simply getting materials is difficult and much more getting "the right ones." Add to that... "this v i r u s" has basically shutdown all deliveries for further shipments, so I'm back at the scratch my head point trying to figure out the best "workaround." Oh well... Life is what happens, when you make other plans... right?? Ha ha ha... and that said... Thumbs Up on your vids. You're a "thinker" and it's enjoyable to see what you're building. @BennettPictures

For most cuts I just use a shop vac hooked up to the back dust exhaust on the Dewalt. And then for really dusty cuts (like long 2x4s) I'll run a second vacuum off the overarm and that can help a lot. I've always wanted to feel the power of a full-size dust collector though, I wish I could own one.

Excellent Job. It looks like the long miter track you added is as thick as the melamine. How did you manage to embed it in the melamine and keep the left part of the bench top from braking off?
@acanadianwoodworker
@acanadianwoodworker 3 года назад
The melamine is 5/8 inch, and the Incra track is 1/2 deep. So there's 1/8 left in the melamine. The melamine coating on the bottom actually makes such a small thickness pretty strong. Its also reinforced by placing that thin part along a 2x4, and then the left part is braced underneath as well. Even with all that I still think I'm going to hit it hard accidentally and just break the whole thing off.
@dk31rc
@dk31rc 3 года назад
Thanks for the reply. Nice to know that it works this way. If you have diagonal braces ("knee" braces) holding the left part you should be ok. It is a weak spot of the bench but on the other hand you save on weight and complexity compared to thicker or multiple layers of sheets for the bench top.

@acanadianwoodworker
@acanadianwoodworker 4 года назад
No there's enough air around the saw (like gaps, etc) so I don't think it would overheat easily. Plus I really only run it in bursts. You should be fine unless you create an airtight seal around the whole thing

Most impressive! Your out-feed table implementation is superb. Plus the rest of your shop is very inspiring. Got 1 question for you, given your remarkable attention to detail, I’m curious to know what led you to choose the Dewalt DWE7480. Since I’m new to woodworking and on the market for a compact table saw, the reasoning behind your choice would be greatly appreciated. Currently stuck in research paralysis. Sincerely, Your new subscriber.
@BennettPictures
@BennettPictures 4 года назад
Yes I feel that research paralysis, been there many times :). Before the Dewalt I had a terrible 125.00 Canadian Tire table saw, and it was a laundry list of everything that could be wrong or dangerous about a table saw. Then I saw the Dewalt on sale, did just enough research to see that people were generally happy with it, and bought one. Very glad I did. First off, I'm a hobbyist so a full sized cabinet saw is far off in my future. The Dewalt, given enough love and attention, can produce very fine results. I haven't found a wood species yet I couldn't cut with it. The key thing about the Dewalt is 1) The most important part of the saw, The Arbor, is perfect. 2) The rack and pinion fence, once adjusted one-time, is a lifesaver and will produce repeatable results. I only really discovered this after I bought and used it for a while though. I'd say don't hesitate to purchase if you're on the fence.
@vegandew

Wow, Thanks for taking the time to shoot me a response. This saw sounds great for hobbyists, has a perfect arbor and the rack and pinion fence gives you repeatable results. @@vegandew Haha no problem - 1) Miter tracks are a bit sloppy dimensionally (why I used a surrogate track) 2) Table surface is cast aluminum and not perfectly flat, but within about 0.3 mm which hardly matters 3) Dust collection is difficult until you shroud it

How is the tablesaw secured into its cove? I'm guessing once you have the blade aligned with that large external T-track, you'll not want it to budge even in the slightest....so I'm sure you have a means to make sure the tablesaw doesn't move.
@acanadianwoodworker
@acanadianwoodworker 3 года назад
On the underside of the Dewalt saw there are four mounting points (holes through the frame) - I just have 1/4-20 bolts through those holes, attaching it to the platform. I'm glad you asked though - it actually does move out of alignment a little! When the saw starts up, there is a 'jerk' to the side. It's the sheer power of a sudden start of a direct drive motor at 4800rpm. So even though it's bolted down really firmly, it does creep out of alignment after a few dozen starts of the saw. Only 1/64 of an inch or something at maximum.

Ok... I scrapped together a video showing my "metal version" of this type of design, as promised. It's on my channel... as I'm having trouble copying & pasting the link to post it here re: computer issues. Sorry for the inconvenience...

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice ru-vid.comUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

the amount of time and money invested on that portable saw you could have just bought a cabinet saw.

Interesting comparison! I don't think money wise it would be equal, the saw & bench is very inexpensive. Really just fibreboard, 2x4s, scrap wood and paint. But if time was money it would be equal. It's just a hobby for me that I've had to pick up to renovate my house (I enjoy it too). If I went professional, cabinet saw absolutely is worth the investment. There are many operations you can do on a cabinet saw that a job site saw will never accomplish. Thanks for watching!

Hahah! Actually I normally wear these ratty rubber slippers. They looked so distracting on camera I just took them off. The shops clean but unfortunately my wardrobe is like some castaway on a desert island. Thanks for watching!

People often say that, but my journey was a long one. I used to be so disorganized and messy I would put a driver bit down and instantly lose it in a pile of debris. Then spend hours looking for something that was in my hand a moment ago. Drove me crazy, but I didn't know what to do. When I saw how clean German woodworkers shops were on RU-vid, it blew my mind as to how organized they were. So it became like a game with myself, to see how organized and clean I could make my work experience. It's really helped a lot.
