In this video I review the new 4th generation Tablo 4-tuner over the air DVR for antennas. This is a network connected DVR that can be accessed wirelessly on multiple TVs in your house. It can also be used as a wireless tuner to connect one antenna to multiple TVs over WiFi.

I bought the 4 tuner almost a year ago works well with my Roku and I found the tuner is equivalent to my Samsung TVs. My only gripe after 1 year no AppleTV app, since I prefer my AppleTV 4k > Roku I use Tablo on my other TV and not my primary. I’m expecting better performance on AppleTV since mine is much faster than my Roku. But in fairness I only have the Roku express

I have an antenna on my roof and it was installed in the late 1950s. It still works amazingly well after all these years. You have to see it to believe it! Made in USA.🇺🇸👍🏻

That's because an antenna is an antenna - mostly metal elements designed to pick up certain frequencies. The age doesn't necessarily matter as long as it's designed to pick up the frequencies TV stations in your area broadcast on. I made a video on the subject below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KKV7Bph0XUM.html

Most likely because it is a BIG ASS ANTENNA far more capable of picking up stations than most of the tiny piece of crap antennas that are for sale today😂

Thank you, Tyler, for this review! I've had the 2-tuner 4th gen Tablo for about 8 months (Streaming on 5 Rokus throughout the house) and while it's had some growing pains / bugs here & there, overall it's been a very good TV / DVR experience. Mine is linked to an amp boosted outdoor antenna, one you recommended to me around 2017... reception & image quality is on point, though one channel is just barely out of sync with audio. One thing I want to add to your review, especially for 2-tuner owners, is that there's currently no firmware-driven way to handle program recording prioritization. So users just need to be aware that whichever programs they set to record or subscribe to most recently, will fail to record if there's a conflict (both tuners already being used for recordings). The programs that you set to record first, are given first priority. Depending on how many things you're scheduled to record, that can be tedious to keep track of. The workaround is basically to take whatever programs you least care about, and cancel them, then schedule them again. That moves them to lowest priority. Side note: I really believe if more people knew about Tablo and could see the quality & features it has to offer - and how it can easily be a permanent whole-house solution, that most would make the effort to install that exterior antenna and get it all connected. Thanks again for all you've done and keep doing, Tyler. You're awesome.

We've been using the how about you 2-tuner version for about 9 months now. At first there were a lot of bugs we had to work out between the device, storage, our coax connection and our internet. We ended up going with a wired ethernet connection and it's been smooth sailing ever since. We use it almost everyday!

I've used it through Roku and Fire TV. It's a brilliant system, but the app is very buggy. It's great to have an onboard DVR and you can beef up storage capacity with a thumb drive. The tuner is super powerful, picking up more channels than my TV-antenna combo previously did. You can even record off the streaming channels. The bad news: Sometimes it takes a while to load or doesn't open at all. You have to back out of a channel to see the programming guide, and it doesn't "save your spot." If you back out of a viewing a channels it sends you back to the beginning of the guide. If you have the captioning on, it can garble a rrecording.

Great review. I’m a happy 3rd generation user. I’m glad to hear the new owners preserved the ‘no monthly fee’ feature, as the previous owners tried to initiate one. I’ll probably upgrade, as I like some of the streaming channels on my newer Samsung, but aren’t available on my older Panasonic. Also, I didn’t realize the Tablo had their own antenna and amplifier, especially the amplifier.

The streaming channels with the new Tablo air pretty good content. While I'm sure they can be accessed through a streaming app on your current device, the new generation Tablo lets you record from them.

I bought one and returned it. Pros: 1. 4 tuners under $150 2. Free accurate guide. 3. All the connectivity options are fantastic. Cons: 1. 2 week guide seems accurate, but it takes much scrolling to determine if it plays the next week. Searching is best way. 2. No way program based on time, only the guide works. I watch movies and mini-series educational shows. I have to know the name of the show in advance to schedule by searching. With PBS recording by time works better than the slow to scroll guide. 3. The tuner only got one city reception better than the discontinued Channel Master. (They now sell the Tablo.) And that city never has more than 2 things on at once. Don't need 4 tuners. 4. Only channels available on the last scan are listed in the guide. I have 5 antennas. Possibly the old model is better. Moving through the guide is faster. And manual recordings can be setup by time. No idea if scanning would work better with 5 antennas on the old one.

Hey Tyler, Thanks for letting me know about this amazing product. Living in the concrete canyons of New York City and using rabbit ears for OTA reception, I found that the smart TV was not really up to the challenge of obtaining a stable picture on several channels including METV which is not available on my live steaming service.. After I ordered the 2-Tuner Tablo through your link and hooked it up to the rabbit ears, there was an amazing reception improvement. And as an added bonus, I can now use the Roku remote to access the OTA channels rather than switching to the TV remote. Great!

This is very, very interesting to me. I do volunteer in a 55 And over community. Recently the contract with the cable company and the 55 and I er community is no longer. They don't want to pay streaming services because channels that they like is mostly over the air. Her Samsung TV provides free television using internet, however local channels can be somewhat of a problem and requires switching from TV to antenna which is not a good combination for elderly people. I feel this product can solve a lot of problems for people in this situation. I'm beginning to see that a cable company when annual contracts fall though with the community,they want to charge normal prices which they can't pay on a social security check every month. This needs to be tested on a much older people to see what they think. I forgot to mention most of the community has some kind of good to basic Internet. I can't thank you enough for sharing this.

I got the Tablo 3rd Gen HDMI 4-channel box in August 2022. Then, when Tablo offered the 4th Gen 2-channel box to existing subscribers at a discount in November 2023, I grabbed it, because we had just bought a new television and I didn't want to move the HDMI box. I should have waited a couple months for the 4-channel box. For the most part, the 4th Gen box works well, but I've had a few issues. When it is recording two shows, you cannot watch a third, of course, but sometimes you can't watch either of the two shows you're recording either or any previous recordings. And, 3 times over the past 8 months, the Tablo lost connection to our Wi-Fi. The app on the TV couldn't connect and the phone app wanted to set up a new box. The reset button on the Tablo didn't work, but after powering down the Tablo a few times, it reconnected. But, a majority of the time it's been good. Like you said, the reception is remarkable compared to the Gen 3 box. As much as I want to upgrade so I can drop the subscription for the HDMI box, I'm going to wait for Tablo to come out with a 4-channel ATSC 3.0 box before I replace the two boxes I have now.

However, when TV broadcast signals were interfered by some weather conditions, the tuner would freeze and drop out and required a full cold reboot (unplug power) and had to go through the entire initial setup so I returned it to Amazon for refund. I now use my PC with two tuner cards with NextPVR which does not drop a recording during bad weather.

Can't wait for it to have next gen tv tuners. If it did, I would order one today. I think we would have better signal by running the antenna into this rather, rater then running it to a 1 to 5 splitter. With the 1 to 5 splitter the closest tv to the antenna seems to get a few more channels than the tvs that are further away. Some of the furtherest away tvs have a ROKU stick for this reason. I hope if they upgrade the tuners that you will bring it back to the channel and let us know about it.

The new 4th Gen Tablo you are reviewing does have draw backs. I have the previous generation, what Tablo now calls "Legacy"; Tablo Quad Over-The-Air [OTA] Digital Video Recorder [DVR] - with WiFi, Live TV Streaming, Black. The new 4th Gen does not have remote viewing as you say. The internal storage cannot be upgraded whereas the previous generation can be. You can add more storage to the new 4th gen with an external HDD via USB. But, you can do this too with the Legacy plus add external as well. The big difference between "Legacy" and 4th Gen Tablo's is the subscription fee. The new 4th Gen does not have a guide subscription fee. The previous Legacy version does have a subscription fee of $4.99/Mo for a guide view of two weeks or it's free if you're ok viewing a 24-Hr guide. BUT, for the $4.99 subscription you get remote viewing which I use all the time to watch local news and weather and TV shows on my iPhone. Thanks for making an episode on the Tablo where others seemed to prefer the Homerun and the rest

Sorry Tablo, not having remote access outside the home is a deal breaker for me. It's the main reason I bought my earlier generation Tablo in the first place. We have a cottage with Starlink internet and I stream video from my Tablo near the city to the remote location. It works great. Recently we had a severe thunderstorm and a lightning strike at a neighbors home knocked out my Tablo at home and I panicked because there is really no other replacement for that device. Fortunately it was just the power brick that was affected and a new power supply brought everything back to life. I quickly installed a good surge protector to hopefully prevent that situation again. Bring back remote access!

I think I’ll buy a spare 4 tuner of the old design just in case my current one breaks down. I’m starting to not trust companies now. This “we are looking into __________”, usually means “you’ll never get that feature back”.

Does this new one also give the disk or card a LInux-only format, or did they get smart and format as exFAT so we can see the stuff on Windows and Mac without special format readers?

Tablo support has been very disappointing. Despite having changed my routing equipment, I still have occasional buffering problems. The tuner has been absolutely pathetic. I'm glad you had better luck with it than I did Tyler. I probably should've returned it.

I've been waiting for a year for the Apple TV Tablo app to be released before buying. Is the signal sensitivity better on the 2 tuner version than on the 4 tuner version?
@NonLegitNation2
@NonLegitNation2 19 дней назад
the big pro to this device is that it connects to your router which is cool because then everyone with a smart TV can access it instead of having to buy multiple tuners/DVRs. I think they should still have allowed the option for off-site/remote mobile streaming though, even with the higher bandwidth signal. I have gigabit fiber internet and my phone has 5G so I would think that would be enough to allow me to stream the recordings to my phone.

Returned my 4th gen. 2 tuner Tablo as it could not pick up or had a weak signal on one very reliable channel . This one station that Tablo had trouble with has an 88% signal strength and 100% quality and symbol on the HD Homerun. Also, my Air TV Anywhere had no problems picking up that channel Tablo had trouble with. Maybe I just got a bad unit with bad tuner. I'll stick with HD Homerun since I don't use DVR.

I originally bought a 4th. gen Tablo, but wound up returning it and getting the legacy Tablo. In my opinion the 4th. gen has one HUGE flaw - no manual programming options. You're completely dependent on the program guide. In my area there are several low-power stations that show up in the guide but don't list their programming, and one channel that the guide thinks is a completely different channel from about 60 miles away! I like recording some programs from these channels, but that's impossible on the 4th. gen. It works fine on the legacy, however, so that's what I'm going to stick with until and unless the 4th. gen starts providing that functionality.

I am using the older Tablo Quad and has been serving me well now for over 2 years. I've been somewhat hesitant to purchase the upgraded model due to lack of ATSC 3.0 support. However I might just go ahead and get the new quad model.
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 19 дней назад
ATSC 3.0 is not necessary as we are in the very very early stages of it. The technical specs for network tuners to decode DRM haven't even been released yet. ATSC 1.0 will still be around for at least ten years. See video below. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Kjj5xVZ5nY.html

It worked then it lost channel i gave up because i cant move the modems to set up. So I'd like to see the how you wired it. I got a ethernet cord for modems and coax for antenna nothing connected to tv. Is there a way to just use wireless connection?

Love my Tablo, I have the 2 tuner. Unfortunately, my samsung tv in stalls the tablo app but it doesn't work so I use it thru my android box or my firestick in the other room. great picture, more channels than my antenna gets also. easy to use recording option. Just an FYI, if you record onto a flashdrive you will not be able to remove the flashdrive and watch on your computer. Tablo must code it so the shows can only be used via tablo.

Does the new version automatically upload the recorded program to your windows based computer using the program (tablo ripper with legacy tablo) if you have that setup, and the ability to manually upload the program to your smartphone if using the Tablo OTA app? I'm already in love with these features and wouldn't give them up.

Not to my understanding. You can only access the recordings on an approved streaming device.

Agreed. I have owned two HD Homeruns. My old Prime (cablecard model) worked great with Windows Mediacenter for many years. I then moved to Plex and OTA 4 tuner FLEX. Works wonderfully and I can watch from anywhere, I can also download recordings when on the go and for long flights. I coupled it with a Synology NAS that can handle real-time transcoding (models with Intel Quick sync work great).

Would Tablo potentially work in the country of Panama which has several OTA channels. I'm mainly interested in getting OTA in a top floor 3rd story beach condo with direct line of sight to the broadcast antenna. The condo has concrete walls, so I'm interested in the internal room wireless broadcast from antenna room to TVs in other rooms without having to run coax around the concrete walls.
