In this video, we look into the awesome looking, less than practical Remington Tac-14. This particular version is dressed up with old school wood furniture that makes it look much like the iconic U.S. Marshals Witness Security shotgun. If the U.S. Marshals thought it had some merit, can we find a use for it 40 years after it's inception?

Love the video! Your Channel is Awesome. Remington designed and produces the Pistol grip not Shockwave Technologies. Also thought you might be interested in this post by the original designer Gene Thompson. Gene made this post on March 20, 2022. Just finished reading the above article on the Marshals Service Short Shotgun and need to clear up a few points. I was the Marshal Service Armorer in 1982 and created the first two Marshal Service Short Shotgun prototypes with input from USMS Inspector Lin Jordahl. The two prototypes were hand made by me at the Marshal Service Armory located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center at Glynco Ga. They were made from Remington 870 blued Wingmaster 870 service shotguns with 20″ barrels taken from Marshal Service inventory. The pistol grips where my design: The decision was made to make an additional 50 Short Shotguns 25 for Witness Protection and 25 for the Warrant. Squad. With me doing the other modifications I didn’t have time to modify the butt stocks to pistol grips so we contracted with Jim Wilson to do them with a pattern made by me and instructions on how to make them. Jim Wilson had no input on the pistol grip design. Contrary to numerous magazine articles and misleading advertisements Wilson Arms never supplied any of his Witness Protection shotguns to the Marshals service. The Remington Tac-14 Hardwood: The original Marshals Service Short Shotguns where blue steel 870 Wingmasters with polished bolts and no Flex Tab followers, they did not have a magazine extension. The Tac-14 has a safety plate supplied by Sage International which is the same one used by the FBI. I used that safety plate as an idea, but hand made a similar trimmed down version for use on the Marshals Service Short Shotgun. The Tac-14 pistol grip and forearm are either dark stained birch or maple. The Marshal Service Short Shotguns all had walnut pistol grips and forearms. The Tac-14 pistol grip is not quite the same shape as my original design, the Shock Wave pistol grip is closer but, slightly longer to get the necessary 26″ overall length. The Speed Feed plastic pistol grip is an exact copy as I sent them a pattern to copy. The Tac-14 has a 14.0″ barrel with no choke tube The MSSS had a 14.5″ barrel with modified choke. I wish Remington would have contacted me I would have helped them make an exact copy. How many where made: I made the original 50, The 25 that went to witness Protection had the birds head pistol grip. The 25 that went to the Warrant Squad had the 14.5″ barrel but, used the plastic pistol grip from the factory Remington Law Enforcement folding stock. I built 6 for Bureau of Prisons for use in Prison transfer busses. 25 were built for training guns used at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center at Glynco, Ga. I built one for myself on a Form 1. It was on display in the indoor firing range range at Glynco until I retired in 2006. I built 2 exact copies, one for each for of my two sons using factory replacement part receivers that had never had a butt stock attached, with 14.5″ barrels for an overall length of 26 1/4″. Gene Thompson, Marshal Service Armorer 1979-1984

Thanks for the kind words and good information! How cool would it have been for Remington to get with the actual armorer to create a perfect clone? Don't get me wrong, I really like the one I have, but a blued wingmaster would be 🤌

The Witness Protection shotgun was commonly carried with an M1 Carbine sling which has a pull-the-dot fastener on one end. That way it could easily be carried under a windbreaker. This is a great truck gun in my mind.

It would definitely do the job if you land the shot. I really enjoy the history of this thing, but there is some niche utility to be sure. I need to see if I can snatch up a carbine sling for it! Thanks for the info

If someone (such as younger folk) want to shoot it, 1 7/8 shells are very manageable (1 at a time). 2 3/4 high velocity rounds is a lot. When firing from the hip, "aim" for a spot about a foot lower than you intent to hit.

Thanks for the info! I believe the Shockwave with an opsol adapter will run short shells fairly reliably. That may be the better buy for the recoil sensitive.

It was designed for very close quarters combat situations. I believe the USMS used a mix of 4 Buckshot and/or Goose-loads. In the card table distances it was intended to be used in the spread wasn’t an issue…it just made baseball sized holes. The Goose-loads also were easier on the shooter and wouldn’t penetrate hotel/motel walls. It’s far more practical than it’s given credit for. It’s a very niche firearm. I used one (12 inch barrel) working warrants for years and it was very effective.

re: home defense, there is something to be said about a 12 gauge that you can walk sideways through a door with. Just sayin'!

I added hockey stick tape to the birds head of my Shockwave. This made the gun much easier to handle especially with slippery hands. It might look weird on your wooden furniture but I'll bet the practical improvement would be worth it. Side note, I like what I see on your channel. Liked & sub'd. Good stuff. Thanks.

Thanks very much! I think some tape would look decent, and the grip benefit would be worth it. Need to get some soon. Appreciate the kind words

Yup. This is novelty with tiny little niche uses for most people. If it's a truck gun, most stocked shotguns would fit too

Pointing practice power washer. Hold firmly and can be done side but try from center mass. Try before from side if your hand’s are weak .. Strong hand’s pistol grip 20” from jaw and point shoot. Above you and gun make a 🔺 Mine is USMS barrel lenght, old Speedfeed🐦grip was shorter and more angle than these modern AoW’s. Mine no bead. Put 🐞on top of that barrel= dead center😊

How exactly is this not practical?? Cause it doesn’t reach out and touch something 600 yds away?…. Seems like a pretty ideal CQB weapon to me.

It's not that it can be used. There are just a bunch of choices that are much easier to use without the same sacrifices

@zacharydalton8132 it most definitely is an ideal home protection weapon. I have owned 2 Shockwaves since they were introduced and I can’t think of anything better suited for addressing an intruder in a narrow hallway.

If I Buy This, I Would Put A Stock On It & FORM 1 It & Turn It Into An SBS... I Would Also Put A Stream Light TL-RACKER 1000 Lumen Foregrip Light & A 6 Shot Card On The Side, For A Reload...

You need to run a sling and keep it on tight. Thats your strap to keep your hand inside the forend. I use a black GI sling for an M-16 and it works perfect.

You should of tested it with flight control or cut slugs

I've never used cut slugs but I imagine that the flight control would make a near 1" hole from 3-5 yards
