A common issue on older Toyota's and other vehicles when fitting a standalone ECU and/or replacing the stock ignition coil, is that the tachometer no longer works. This can be because in the stock configuration, the tachometer is driven by the high output of the stock ignitor/coil.
In this example using a EP91 Toyota Starlet Glanza V, I show you how to fix this issue by modifying the tachometer, replacing a 43k ohm resistor with a 1k ohm resistor in order to accept the output signal from a standalone ECU.

If I had this video 4 years ago it would have made it easier 😂. I had to figure it out to make mine work

I needed to do this on my glanza for so long but wasn’t sure exactly on what to look for, really informative video!! Keep it up 👌🏻

Yeah it's pretty straight forward once you see which resistor to swap out. Glad I could help!

Will this work on a paseo cluster with only revs to 7k and will the resistor have to be the same ohms?? Also excellent video I was wondering the how would I get the signal when I make my 5efe standalone and individual coils

@elvingarcia3770 I can't say for sure as I've not looked at a paseo cluster before but it's possible it will be the same . I do know that there are Celicas and other 90's Toyota's where the layout of the board and resistor ohms are exactly the same. I would try to get it to work without doing any modifications at all first and then if it's not working you can investigate if the mod is required.

Good job. Is the standard wiring to the cluster remain the same?

@arnoldodida Yeah, I don't touch the dash wiring at the gauge cluster at all. On the Glanza V you will find a solid black wire which is on a 16-way body connector near the ECU plugs. This is where I connect to an ECU output for driving the tacho.

Nice one Stephen! I didn’t know solder wick was even a thing!

Ha yeah I first heard about it on the @EEVblog soldering series a few years ago, couldn't do without it now
