As requested in my comments, some tips on tacking. In this tack tutorial I try to improve my toeside to heelside tacks, foil out of a behind the back tack, and land my first heelside to toeside tack. Also, I discover which foils work best when learning to tack. Some goofy foot slow motion shots of each tack at the end of the video. #wingfoiling #tutorial #tack #goprohero9 #maxlensmod #wingfoiling #carbinhawings #axisfoils

UPDATE: After practicing some more tacks I’ve found I was bringing the wing too far over my head and forcing the leading edge down into the wind. It really really helps to keep the leading edge of the wing high up over your head and flat as you pull it over your head so that you don’t get backwinded. It will also provide more lift as you turn. Really important tip I don’t mention in the video.

Thanks a lot for putting this together so quickly! Will be trying out your tips this weekend. I’ve been telling my winging friends to watch your videos. It might be worth your time to share these videos on some of the winging forums out there (like Seabreeze and Standupzone) so that you can get some much deserved exposure. You bring a lot that some of the seasoned pros miss out on, in my opinion-I think it’s because you’ve been through the progression and are able to pick up on tips that the seasoned pros might otherwise presume are too straightforward to warrant a breakdown of what’s going on. Keep ‘‘em coming!

Thanks for inspiring me to work on my tacks. I try not to share my own stuff too much. I hope if it’s of value it will find its audience! Good luck on you tacks. You got this!

Great content, thanks for sharing, I am getting half my toeside to heelside tacks and want to get a bit better before trying heelside to toeside again.

I don’t blame you. Heel to toe is weird!

I am sooooo glad that I am NOT the only one who is having a hard time tacking!! 😁😎... Thank you... 😘 By the way, I will try tacking with my PNG 1150, forget 910! 😊😁😉

Read my update comment. Helps so much. You gafe to get a 910 such a great foil. That and 880.

@@wingmanfoilclub I did, but still I will. stick to my PNG 1150 regardless of my wing size and hand position until I get so much better... 😉😁😎

Nice tutorial! I've got toe to heel on one side but heel side has been slow going. Some good suggestions for heel side to try. I'll give the behind the back stuff a go too. I'm wondering what lake you were winging on?
@wingmanfoilclub

That is Lake Piru in the Santa Clarita area of California. Check out my how to boost video for a couple more tack tips about halfway through.

Is there less drag on the wing when tacking with the wing behind the body? its lower so you might expect slower wind down there.
@wingmanfoilclub
@wingmanfoilclub 2 года назад
Hmm. Maybe. It’s hard to compare because it takes longer so feels slower. But definitely read my comment on keeping the wing high and flat for regular tacks. That cuts down on the drag and makes the regular tack much more high percentage. Try the behind the back too. It’s not too hard!

Hi Rob, I was just coming back to this video for a refresh and I use the same foils, I know you have moved on from AXIS in your current videos, But would like some info on the stabs you use. I use one stab for both HPS1050 & 880 its a 425 progressive. the 880 was a secondhand bargain that I added to my quiver and I love it, but do you think the 425 Progressives holding it back, what combos did you use??
@wingmanfoilclub
@wingmanfoilclub Год назад
I was using the 375 progressive most of the time or the 400 flat speed. I would use the 425 on the 1150. You’ll definitely get a lot less drag with a smaller stab. I would try it. And then adjust mast placement forward if you’re not getting enough front foot pressure. When I rode the 799 I used the 325, which was very fast and loose. Another option to consider for turning and pitch control is fuse length. Ultrashort will turn better than short. But short will be more stable.
@wildhogget69
@wildhogget69 Год назад
@@wingmanfoilclub Excellent advice, I think I will see if I can pick up a 375P as I have heard great reviews about it and could fit in nicely changing it up. I use the Short fuse. So far with the new board, I might need to shim the mas as the new board has tail rocker and I am sure the further back the more it affects the Rake angle.
@wingmanfoilclub
@wingmanfoilclub Год назад
@@wildhogget69 I’ve never shimmed the mast, but on last generation boards the foil tracks are too far back for the new foils compared to footstrap placement especially for bigger riders, so I often have the mast all the way forward and the board still wants to nose down. So what I do in those situations is shim the rear wing. For AXIS I think it’s what they call a Positive shim to add more front foot pressure. Which adds more lift in the front of the board, but also adds a little drag. Getting that rear wing shimmed properly definitely makes the foil feel better throughout a range of speed and gets rid of the “pitchy” effect. Then you can use the ultrashort fuse and get zippy turns but still feel stability.
