Tackling Central Heating Wiring - Google Nest Thermostat Installation - Electrician Life.
Join me as I install a Google Nest Thermostat set up for a dual-zone heating system in a house. Wiring centers can be a tangled mess sometimes but I explain how I trace the wiring in order to know which cable does what and get everything working safely and efficiently.

It's really nice that there's one centralized place for all the heating and hot water electrical connections in Britain. In the U.S. these connections tend to be made wherever they wind up and the low voltage ones are seldom in boxes at all.

I do like your videos and I learn some thing every time. ( well nearly every time). As you said these Nest thermostats in the UK are just switches and in your example are being applied to a very very basic UK plumbing system. In fact the heating system is exactly the same as the one I as a non plumber designed from a few diy articles when I built or perhaps more accurately project managed the build of my house 25 years ago! The Honeywell control system with zone thermostats still works fine today and I can turn the stats up and down whenever I want!! The USA Nest system looks much more interesting but then it caters for AC as well as heating and their types of heating are easier to design around individual room thermostats in stead of upstairs and downstairs zones. However they look smart and it might be nice to spend the £400 to help create an up market illusion when I sell my house next year. By the way should you not test your tester on alive wire before and after testing the circuit you are interested in? As an old codger I will relate a true story around testing....I did my training with an Electricity Board in the early 1960 s on the HV side. I had just become Authorised to issue permits to work and was isolating a 33kv line from a 33kv substation. The routine was to test the testing stick by opening a bus bar shutter and putting the stick on the bars whereupon it would glow and buz a bit. You then put the stick on the feeder terminals and it should not light....and it didn’t. However when the earthing gear was attached and the beaker was being racked in it started to buz!! Quickly racked out and retested the stick all fine. The whole area fed from the 33kv through the 11kv to the LV was supposed to be isolated and dead.....turned out there was an obscure and lost! LV back feed which was not causing enough volts to light the tester but enough to make a warning Arc when starting to rack in the earthing gear..Moral of the story?.......never lick your fingers and touch a conductor to see if it is alive!

Jordan, the heat links have a unique ID on them and you can program the nest stat to connect to the required heat link, so if they do get muddled up you can just go into the settings on the Nest programmer to find out which one its paired with and swap over the nest stats accordingly.

A really helpful video, thank you. I was overwhelmed when I opened my wiring centre at first. Still trying to figure it out though, I have an air to water heat pump system by Joule / Samsung. It looks way more complex than the job in this video. I wish you covered call outs Ireland ! 😂 Two zones with 230v thermostats to each. Separate Samsung branded controller for hot water. I don’t even know where to start. If you have any suggestions or offer a remote support service I’d be willing to pay ! Thank you.

Bacteria Prevention is an exclusive feature of 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostats. Bacteria Prevention mode will activate if your domestic water hasn’t been heated for at least two consecutive hours in the last 48 hours. This can happen if there is a gap of more than 48 hours in your hot water heating schedule or if you are away from home for longer than 48 hours. For instance, if you have a second home or holiday home and only need hot water for weekends, you can create a hot water schedule for Saturday and Sunday, and the Bacteria Prevention mode will automatically heat the hot water tank during the week. not to do with heating.....
@ValorHeart
@ValorHeart 3 года назад
Where the bacteria grows? isn't it closed water line only for heat?
@warrmr
@warrmr 3 года назад
I guess this is not as good as the controls on a commercial boiler (Legionella prevention mode) Whereby for energy savings and H&S reasons the hot water can be kept at around 55c then on a cycle the tank is "Pasteurised" where it is heated to 65c and held there for a few hours before going back to 55c. Same with Cole water storage tanks, Industrial controls have a temperature sensor and an algorithm that detects the "Danger Zone" and initiates a tank flush if the tank is in the Danger Zone too long. I assume the nest system is just a "Dumb" system as it doesn't know the temperature of the water tank so cycles it on at regular intervals to pasteurise the tank.

Hi, superb video for a 2-zone install install - thanks so much. I have one question - at timestamp 17:20... what gauge wire was used? I'm assuming it was 2.5mm2 5-core, but what about the black cable for T1 / T2 to thermostats? Was it .75mm2 for the 12V?? A great video, cheers. Trying to find some of the basic information has been practically impossible until now. However, I don't have an existing room based thermostat and I simply want to power the thermostat from a simple 12v PSU. Can you tell me which terminals to use on the thermostat for +12v and GND? Maybe I'm missing the point somewhere but why don't they at least label them as such instead of all the seemingly random letters? Maybe it all makes perfect sense to a heating engineer but I'm an electrical engineer. All the letters labeling the terminals mean nothing to me. It's going to link to the boiler wirelessly via Heatlink so all I need to do is power the bloody thing up ;)

That wiring box is a typical rats nest of wiring you see when removing the cover. At first glance a confusing maze of wires. Can take a while to work out which wire is which. Especially for cables that disappear into the wall and emerge in some other part of the house. Easy to pick out some cables that are surface mounted and go to devices in the same location. Often easier to wire in a system from scratch than retrofit stuff working out which wire is which and what one actually needs to alter

The browns of the thermostats aren't permanent lives, they connect onto the switch back from the timeclock. Also what's the point in putting a brown tag on an black cable, all's your doing is tagging a live cable saying its live, you only need to tag a cabke if its doing something other than its intended purpose i.e. using a black on a 3 cored armoured as a CPC

Programmers are old hat now, the nest stat controls the on off times via an app. I have a heatmiser setup which controls the central heating, hot water and electric underfloor heating via an App. My boiler has a live from the fused switch, then from there the power goes to the control gear and the pump wires direct to the boiler
@warrmr
@warrmr 3 года назад
"Programmers are old hat now" I guess I will just quit now and become a Wizard instead :) . Im on the fence with Heatmiser I've done two large installs where I have had to integrate with their stats and I find that the API is lacking (Or was when I did those jobs) There was a lack of consistency between the functions available in the app and what they allow programmers to access via the API so had to write some interesting logic to brute force those features. Nest I like and they had a great API but they may have ruined integrations as I saw a bulletin that "Works with Nest" applications are being discontinued so I can no longer get new API keys for new customers. Both stats seem to miss out on HVAC integration, they seem to do Heating and Domestic Hot water just fine but no Cooling, for that you end up with two systems that need to be integrated by a programmer or you end up buying big boys toys and installing something like a Tridium Jace controller with BacNet and writing a custom app to control the HVAC.

"Central heating baffles a lot of people, a lot of electricians won't touch it" yet plumbers can handle it, kind of worrying really. Worth pointing out than in systems that have boilers with integrated pumps (probably most domestic systems) the orange wires from the valves are a call for heat from the boiler which fires up and the boiler controls the pump rather than the pump controlling the boiler (indirectly via a flow switch in the boiler).
@mfx1

We've seen this install before. It's the same nest install he was doing when he explained that Oscar had left the company.

So weird to see that installing a thermostat is an electrician’s job. In The Netherlands, almost all thermostats are low voltage on tiny little wires that connect directly to a combination boiler that delivers hot water and heating to radiators.

It makes me cringe when electricians try to do a heating engineer's job.

I have my old central heating and hot water program control box on the wall in the hall, next to the wired thermostat. Would it be possible to fit the Nest white control box over where the old control box currently sits, assuming the necessary wiring is present, (which it logically should be) and the new Nest Thermostat controller where the old thermostat is? - Can anyone see a reason why that should not work?
