Circulator for indirect on gas fired steam boiler. Not a smart way to pipe it in. Messed up! I used this circulator: amzn.to/3swo9Qu Typically during routine annual maintenance on steam boilers, we use a chemical: amzn.to/3bLckPC
sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Billy Hamza Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Another good vid and diagnosis Mike. This change out reminds me of the old 1/12 and 1/2 H.P. B&G circulators with spring coupler that we had to change out in early 70's and 80's. Then along came the throw away taco and grundfos units. Not to date myself though.
Damn. They left the internal check valve. We get rid of them. Especially on a hot water leg off a steam boiler. We use a conventional flow control valve
While there are a lot of boilers and some steam around here,, residentially I have never seen an indirect or other heating done with the liquid water of a steamer... would it be beneficial to use a bronze pump or do you primarily see just see system particulate? Good video mike
When you flush a boiler like this, do you add any chemicals to either clear out the crud or reduce future corrosion? Not saying THIS one as there will be a new owner.
My Parents home in Jersey was built in the 1920's, the Steam Boiler was Oiled Fired but was originally Coal Fired! Once we got my Father to understand that you need to drain / flush the system, it took several months of flushing 2-3 times a month to get it to clear up.
I was raised in Norther NJ. 1939 Coal fired till the mid 50's, then it was converted to oil. Since it did not have an auto-fill, you looked at the site glass frequently and soon as it started to brown up: Flush . Mikey Why don't boilers use the straight thru brass drain valves found on good water heaters? Easy to ram a screwdriver thru to clear a clog.
Correct me if I''m wrong, but doesn't that 007 have to be installed with the motor horizontal? That circulator is a wet rotor and should be installed horizontal.
Just out of interest, do you not fit magnetic filters! Standard in the uk we put them on the return feed on CH to collect magnetite from the system in conjunction with a chemical that helps keep the chocolate milk away 👍
@@PipeDoctor seems crazy! Cheap affective way of protection you, would of thought it would be standard. There’s always people here that refuse it all though it’s relatively cheat at around £140 for magnet and chemicals people rather penny pinch!
Correct. I assume he just got it running because that's the way the installer did it and the current homeowner couldn't give 2 fucks if it dies in another few months
In the 40 years that I've been in this trade, I have never seen this application for an indirect domestic water heater connected to a hydronic steam boiler. Was chimney to small to accomodate installing a 50 gallon atmospheric vented gas water heater?
It's not domestic water. It's for a hot water heating loop independent from the steam. Like an attic or basement addition. Or a garage. It's a Brooklyn thing.
Mike do you run into a lot of steam boilers where someone has hacked in a pump for Hot water heating? I was under the impression you should always go thru a plate heat exchanger or bundle to keep those system separated? I know there's a lot of hacks out there and folks who like to "re engineer" systems!
What do you think about using taco stainless steel pump for this application. I know there a lot more expensive but if he wasn’t selling the house would you of recommended that pump
As far as I know bronze is not manufactured anymore it’s stainless steel now. And I was told they hold up better to the higher temperatures. But I also see regular tacos and they seem to hold up pretty well. The next trade show I go to I will ask hopefully that’s sooner than later. Nice video
Hello from Spain, I love your videos and I try to understand what you say since my English is quite bad. Just comment that apart from the circulator being damaged by debris, tell you that it is wrongly positioned, the head can never be looking up, as it will take in air and break. it must always be horizontal. Greetings from a Baxi technician. A hug.
You need a brass or stainless pump. The old oo7 that is the only direction you cannot mount it. Not sure about the ecm, I don't like tacos ecm I have had nothing but trouble. But also the ecm is not good for this application it will attract all the metal.
Gotta use a bronze circulator there. In fact you need a three piece circulator because the the 007 is water lubricated and will never last in a steam boiler
@@biker55555 it really depends on how much rust it picks up from the steam boiler, the cartridge circulator cools from the water where a 3 piece circulator doesn't. I've seen them fail in a year. Some 2 or 3 years.
@@PipeDoctor I will take 2 of them. Unfortunately there is a Taco Bell at the end of my street so i'm kinda drawn to it like a magnet !!! Takes me less than 1 minute walking to get there !!!
My boiler has a Taco 007, someone suggested to me to eventually replace it with a Taco 0018e w/ the bluetooth so I can better watch the flow characteristics and such. Any issues with doing this?
@@PipeDoctor From what I was reading the Bluetooth lets you watch, and change the ECM settings.. things like constant speed, proportional-pressure/constant-pressure. (Things most home owners likely don't know anything about.). It also offers diagnostics though, which can tell the current flow rate, if it's working properly, etc. I'm a gadget guy so this intrigues me, but not sure how that compares to the 007 I already have.
Ever wondered why cars with self diagnostics(OBDII) always seem to have problems? it's not usually the car itself but the diagnostic systems playing up. Add complexity ,then wait for the problems.
@@PipeDoctor hmm. I don't really see them on any of your videos so I just figured they weren't common for some reason. What do I know though? I'm in the south and our heat is just the air-conditioning turned off. Never even heard of someone with a boiler around here.
@@PipeDoctor I’ve been told they can with stand the temperature of the steam boiler water and they won’t rot like the cast iron. I know there expensive and not a lot of guys use them.
Something doesn't look quite right from what a l am seeing about that boiler, but then I really can't tell from the angle of the video I have never seen a steam boiler piped the way this boiler was also didn't see a sight glass again may have missed this but it almost looks like someone converted a forced hot water boiler to steam
Any circulator should be installed with the shaft horizontal to cool the pump. Beyond that measure, a steam system doesn’t require a circulator. Looks like a steam system converted to a hot water system by means of an indirect tank and improper steam piping practice. Pull both the indirect and the steam boiler out and put a modulating hot water in would be my recommendation.
that new circulator will die much quicker than the avg life. i have seem 007 cir burn out in few days in a system system. the water is way too hot, which a water lubricated cir is unable to handle. I always and i will recommend you install a B&G 100 series cir which it can withstand the high temp condition and dirty water condition.
That pump is mounted in the wrong position. Motor up or down is a no no. Unless you are above 20 PSI then motor up is ok. And it should be a stainless steel body or brass body. A y strainer should be used and cleaned yearly.
Steel lines will do that I know it does it to water lines you could have a 1-in water line with barely a eighth inch hole in it for flow imagine that metal rusting LOL :-) :-) keep your boots dry
We install those systems often but not with a indirect but with a baseboard loop. Up to a 2nd story. For that new addition you can't get a steam line to or a modine heater in the garage. Piped right with the proper check valves and pump they work for many years.
We use them all the time in NYC. Lots of nonsense talk here in the comments. While we try to use bronze pumps, they all last for many years. We have bronze Tacos that have been running for 10 years. But we have good water and we keep it clean.
