yeah but cosidering the mental process in signing is greater than with spoken language, it does become a little more than someone having a conversation, and besides, isnt it nice to occasionjhally see what somebody did to help out another human being, or are you of the opinion that only videos that show people being rude nasty and aggressive to others is what we should all be watching, arent you tired of that crap yet?

My youngest daughter had a deaf girl in her grade 4 class, the entire class was taught basic sign language. The kids were keen to learn so they could chat silently in class. One of her friends has gone on to be a speech therapist for the deaf community and married a deaf guy, her matron of honour was the deaf girl from primary school.

this is a really beautiful story. i wish our class had been taught sign language, unfortunately the deaf/blind kids in school were very socially isolated from others in my school :( i think back on how horrible our special needs programs were, i was part of the reading program in elementary and i saw some awful things! I'm so happy to hear how positive the community your daughter had.

I was a bartender and a Train Conductor and I was able to sign to my deaf customers because my aunt is deaf and she taught me as a kid how to communicate with her. It's pretty cool when a hearing impaired customer discovers that you can communicate with them. The sense of relief (especially the traveling public) because they're trying to get somewhere and the fear of ending up in the wrong place must be frightening. It also helps me help them. I recommend everyone especially POLICE take sign courses. Did you know that the deaf are terrified of police? Because they cannot hear an officers commands they are at higher risk of being shot or arrested. So, to be a police officer, I feel that being able to communicate with the deaf is important and one class could make all the difference.

I never would have thought of that. Thank you for bringing up that point. I think we all need to learn to be more tolerant and understanding. More education is necessary to understand all aspects of life.
@charleanastasia5557
@charleanastasia5557 Год назад
@kim cho exactly my point. Imagine being in a country where you cannot understand a word of their language, Now, further complicate the inability to understand. Not only can you not understand their words, but you can't understand the tone of their voices. You can't decipher the urgency in their command, the panic in their tone of voice, warning you that you're making them nervous because you're not complying. (Because you can't- you don't know what they want). You can't communicate. And you reach into your pocket for your phone to translate for you... the officer misunderstandings your movements because his experience with you is that you're non-compliant. What happens next? More often than not, in a panic, you're shot. One college class American Sign Language (ASL) could save lives, help officers communicate with the deaf and helping the officer by him or her not having to live with killing an innocent person just because they couldn't hear you.

This goes for medical professionals as well, I can fingerspell (which is the most basic sign language skill that honestly everyone should know) and when i had surgery and couldn't speak afterwards, I tried communicating with the nurses that way as I was waking up from anesthesia, and no one could really understand me. It was very scary and I can't imagine how much scarier it'd be if I couldn't even hear what the nurses were saying.

But people are acting like this dude ran inside a burning building with no regard for his own life, to save a baby. I mean.. Kenneth Ho Came in the comments section to say exactly what you did. I've taken a few years of ASL myself and studied Deaf culture. There is a SERIOUS misconception as to how Deaf people interact in this world. Hearing people can make every effort to communicate with them but most choose not to. Deaf people can't do the same in return which leaves the hearing more lost than anyone because most people don't realize the importance of learning the language.

FireCat I went to subway with my and my friend and we both got a 12 inch sandwich, so like $14 total and his dad let us use his credit card cause we didn't have cash and it was only down the street. The thing that you swipe wasn't working so we were sitting there for like 20 minutes trying, all of a sudden the guy who was working there took out his wallet and payed cash!!! Super nice for $14 and definitely kind guy! He didn't have to do that but he did. Not to mention the guy was super cool talking to us about going to the skate park on our bikes and stuff and what tricks we know so he deserves respect for that!!

I love how Caleb finds it fun to just speak with others. I also find it fun when I can do that with Japanese but imagine just the thrill you get when you find someone who speaks sign language out of nowhere. It’s not a common language to find

It’s also respectful if you’re in another country or even an establishment run by someone who doesn’t speak English natively. My husband and I go to Asian restaurants ALOT and my husband will ask what language they speak if it’s our first time. Each time after that he greets, thanks and says good bye in their native language. We’ve never had an occurrence of any employee at these places being upset. They always seem very happy to hear him speak their language (even if it’s a little bit) and they’re always very kind to us

I had a deaf customer come in when I was younger and doing fast food cashier work and sadly I had to get them to write down what they wanted. I don't know sign language, but I would eventually like to. It has to be frustrating learning sign language to communicate and then realize that most people do not know it.
@deenibeeniable
@deenibeeniable 7 лет назад
That's true. I think it's one reason there are deaf "communities," like at CSU Northridge and of course Gallaudet College, but in many other places too. Also most deaf people are incredibly good at reading lips, but it's not nearly as good a way to understand as is sign.
@AlverroV

deenibeeniable True. I work with a few deaf people and none of them can sign, but they read lips so well that I often forget they're hearing impaired. And they speak quite well too.

Khaltazar maybe schools should make sign language the required language instead of Spanish
@lisabaltzer3163
@lisabaltzer3163 7 лет назад
ItsOrval You should have to learn another language in school , definitely, but more people speak Spanish than sign, so Spanish would be more useful.
