If the SR5 came with locking differential, that would be my pick . CRAWL Control isn’t necessary for me , but because the TRD Off Road has the locking differential( and the better suspension components) , that’s my choice .

I have a '21 Tacoma SR5 in magnetic grey and I have to say I prefer this over the TRD Off Road. I don't like the plastic fender flares for one. It's more stuff to fade and maintain. I like a truck that's all color matched, no cheap plastic. I do like the chrome rear bumper instead of body colored. It gives it a nice contrast. Another thing I don't like on the TRD Off Road is the two-tone interior. Most of it is black. It gets too hot and it's a pain in the ass to keep clean. The SR5 has the nice full cement grey seats with light colored headliner and grey vinyl on the door panels and dashboard. Much cooler interior for the summer and easy to maintain. A cool little nicety mine has is the upgraded LED interior package with the LED dome light, courtesy lights, and vanity mirrors. I wasn't expecting that at all. It is so much better lighting up the interior especially at night. I do prefer the TRD Off Road's added convenience features such as push-button start, parking sensors, wireless charging pad, blind spot monitoring, etc. but the more I think about it, it's more stuff to break.
Got a 2017 SR5 2WD. Don't really do much camping, traveling or off roading. Only on rare occasions where main road is closed due to accidents or weather. 2WD does fine with off roads near the house in Lake Elsinore, CA. Use mainly for hauling things from home improvement stores for DIY projects around the house. Perfect trim model for me. No regrets. Only did mods for swapping out stock SR5 for TRD grill and replaced chrome rear bumpers.
Since the day I bought my tacoma. I always come back to this guy's tacoma videos. Gives Hella nostalgia when I first got my tacoma and went researching and shopping around. Great times. I can still smell the "new car smell" in this video aha😂
At first I thought you were weird or had 8 cups of coffee before filming, but you grew on me. You seem like a nice honest guy. Your video actually showed me a lot about my truck that I just got. Even though mine is used, it’s an incredible truck.
I just ordered a pretty uncommon choice, according to the sales guy. 2023 SR5 in metallic-red, Access Cab with 6 foot bed, 4x4 with the 2.7L 4-cylinder. My reasons were simple. It was cheaper, more of a utilitarian build, and what seems like the most reliable engine (albeit underpowered). But I have a Camaro if I want to go fast. This truck seemed like the closest thing I could find to my old 1993 I had way back in the day. I loved that truck, and it was red too. I heard this is the last year I could get that same old-school workhorse, so I pulled the trigger. My first new vehicle! Now I just wait for it to be delivered.
I thought about getting the TRD Off Road but I realized 90% of my driving will be on road and maybe 10% off road. So, I made my decision by going with SR5 Access Cab. Very happy with my choice. And also thanks for the video. Really helped me with comparing between two models.
They both have the same skid plate. The SR5 one is hidden behind the air damp. The TRD Pro version is the only one with the fancy skid plate, but you can just buy it and place it onto your tacoma.
@@Flopseee nah man, I replaced mine months ago and my taco looks great, simple SR5 with just 265/75R16 tires and some spot lights. Simple and basic but gets the job done and doesn't break my pocket.
I looked at the SR5, the TRD Off Road and the TRD PRO. Ultimately I chose the TRD Off Road , double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs. It’s like the Limited Edition with the TRD Off Road and PRO trim pkgs. It was the best bang for my money. The front camera, rear locker, CRAWL from the PRO. The Leather, power seats, navigation, etc from the Limited plus the Off Road prowess. I absolutely Love my 23 TRD in Ice Cap White

I went on some awful trails in Northern Washington/Idaho in a Corolla of all things just to see. TRD offroad is a marketing gimmick. Just get an SR5 in 4 wheel drive and you're good to go. If you are going rock crawling, get something else
I always love your videos! Quirky is fun. I plan on getting a newer TRD Off Road, so I love watching them being compared! I’d like to see a 2021 Premium Tech packaged Off Road vs. the Pro 😊

Great comparison and I subscribed. "ordered" an SR5 DCLB in April but I'm getting a Lunar Rock Off road DCLB in July. Taking what dealer was allocated and no complaint after watching this video. I like both.
I live in Texas, and I will never be up in your neck of the words to buy a vehicle but watching your videos are entertaining and they’re really descriptive. I’m actually in the market for a new vehicle and I’m trying to side between Toyota for runner, thunder, and an Acura MDX, or Honda ridgeline
Keep up the good work! I am the same way in what I do day in day out, some people will dislike it while many others will love it! I have a Toyota Rav4 but have had a Tacoma as well.
Even if the grilles have the same dimensions, the SR5 horizontal lines make it look smaller and closer to 2nd Gen Tacoma. The TRD grille makes the truck look like it got punched and now has a cartoonish swollen nose.
I bought a 2020 SR5 in cement like the one he is showing. I got that because it was cheaper and would do all the off road driving and towing Planed. Unless toyota changed for 21 you do get alloys standard in silver or dark grey, so Jeff might be wrong. The SR does come with steel wheels standard so that may be what he was thinking. The black ones shown are still a $0 option. The other thing he wasn't correct on was the skid plate. SR5 comes with the same one as the off road, you just can't see it because the SR5, SR and sport have that plastic valance under the front bumper.
I don’t really need all the off-road gadgets and features in the TRD trim levels, but I’m leaning towards the TRD since I can’t get the 6-speed manual and in any of the lower trim levels.
I definitely admire them. I didn’t care too much for the grille, or off-road capabilities, as I drive this thing like a grandpa for the most part. It’s been great to me so far. Would like to have the hood scoop and headlights, but it’s a clean ass truck either way. Wish I had that gray though, it would match my bike perfectly
You need to do this with a TRD sport vs TRD off road in a off road scenario. People on the Tacoma facebook pages make fun of us that have the TRD sport. Saying the sport isn't capable of going off road. 🤦🏼♂️ You're wrong about the SR5. It has the exact same skid plate as that off-road does.
So the little black stickers on the wheels is a no-charge option? I guess they feel sorry for you after their "finance guy" hits you for a 2 grand fake warranty so they give you that 30 bucks so you can buy some beans to sustain you until the 7 year financing plan is paid off.
I am from Tacoma, WA and ill prob never get the chance to meet you but I just wanted to say thank you for this very informative video. I'm currently in the market for a truck and was leaning towards a Off Road but thank you for breaking down all the details between the 2.

With the dealer mark-ups on these trucks all across North America (and price markups in general depending on what state you live in) You're looking at a lot more $ on each of these....I know here in NY, that fully loaded SR5 has an MSRP of $38K and the TRD O/R is anywhere from $42K-$46K (And I am not figuring in the dealer mark-ups either which range from $2K-$8K, from what I have seen)....But, you get what you pay for! and these trucks are AMAZING! I Love my '20 SR5, and LOVE the black wheels, they are second best to the PRO wheels!
When off roading, all you have to do to make the SR5 have a non slio rear differential is to do a brake/throttle modulation...pressing the brake and gas at the same time to make the wheels turn evenly
I purchased a SR5 double cab 6' bed last week. Snow, icy back roads and fire roads will be the extent of 4x4 adventures. Should I get the factory TRD lift kit? Which hard tanneau cover should I buy? What rack should I purchase for carrying a canoe and kyack?
The TRD off-road does not have that front overhanging apron there you see on the sr5. Those things are used to improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle and apparently increase the gas mileage. And yet both of them have the same MPG rating. Does the removal of the front apron on the TRD off-road reduce the gas mileage of it at all?

I watch the videos, but I think you need a lavaliere mic. When you move away from the camera the sound always goes down and it's hollow...just my observation to help the video quality.
