The Tacoma doesn't need side steps does it? Are they really just in the way or do they serve a functional purpose. It all depends...

Even a little bit of sliding starts to wear your upholstery out. I use them just for that reason. Also helps with door dings.

@johngilmore9517
@johngilmore9517 5 лет назад
@@RobMotive I agree though, they aren't needed. Especially for a stock height truck. I will remove mine as soon as the little one can get in without them. Or I might just get sliders that are actually functional and can help with the step in for little legs.

I have a set of Predator Steps on my 2021 TRD Sport and they were on the vehicle when I bought it. They definitely look good but they are not very functional. I use them to enter the truck but you have to be careful to step up on that little step. They are solid steel so they will protect your vehicle during a high break over maneuver while off-road. However, the step itself is vulnerable. I have slid over rocks with them using extreme care but I’ve seen people rip them off. A lot of people just cut them off and use the rail for protection. It is very difficult to get your foot just right to use them to access my roof rack or wipe down the top of the roof after washing my truck. That said, I would never buy them again and would insist that the dealer remove them if they come on my future trucks. Cuz I ain’t paying for them.

That’s one thing we differ on. I think trucks look better with Nerf Bars. Maybe not the factory older looking steps but Nurf bars really make them look sporty in my opinion. But hey that’s why they make all different kinds because we don’t all have to same tastes. 👍

I’ve got the OEM cast aluminum running boards on mine, the predator steps for me, are too far forward ... if they were back about 8” they’d be perfect. The nice thing about the running boards is the platform allows me to wash the roof and reach the entire windshield without having to get out a step stool/ladder.

Predator steps will get damaged if you do some mild off-roading, the regular ones look better and are a little more tucked up and out of the way. The only time I use mine is when I wash the roof. Also if you got a mild t-bone collision, they might help you a little.

This is a terrible take. My truck DOES need them, as my kid's can't get in unassisted without them. Also, I'm 6'1, and I use them to load my roof rack at times, Maybe your truck doesn't need them, but it's really a terrible generalization to say they aren't needed.

Hey Rob your truck is looking great! I’m 5’11” and find th side steps in my way most of the time. That being said, they are nice for smaller people to use. But half the ones I see on other vehicles are bent and once that happens they look terrible. If I were to put them on my truck I would go with the Amp retractable ones that have lighting for the night use. You can also turn them on and off. They suck up pass the frame and out of the way so they won’t get bent that easily. A little pricey though! Anyway like the video maybe the Amp running can be your next upgrade 😛

Funny that I should come across your video, as I was actually looking for Nerf Steps for my 2014 (2nd gen) Tacoma. After watching the video, I decided to remove my OEM running board and sell it on Facebook or Craig's List. Ill leave the truck without a step, and just use the money from the OEM running board towards a lift kit. Makes more sense to me. (I'm 5' 4", and I can care less if I need to take a bigger step up. Who cares)?

A month ago I bought a 2022 Tacoma off road with those exact steps .. On day two of owning my Tacoma we went off roading .. at mile two I lost the front passenger step and at mile 3 I crushed the drivers side front. Day three at the welding shop and used a die grinder and removed the steps and covered the running boards with bed liner .. now they work!

For me it's for my family and for my knee. I'm 6'0" with a 3in lifted Taco. I don't currently have steps and can get in and out very easily. However, I've already had 2 surgeries on my knee and it won't get any better. Also for my family, my mom, cousins, and if I ever had a wife and kids, they'll have a hard time getting in. I'm a short guy. Have had Chevy, Dodge Dakota, Frontier all are with a running boards. I have never use it because there is no need for them to get in but the boards are a big obstacle to get out. Have to jump oven them on the ground. The board don't stick out far enough to step in on them. Plus you have to open the truck door wide enough to step precise on the board. Kinda hassle. More than the sill, if you are straining to get in your truck and then sort of slide to get out, you're going to tear up you seats! In which case the step bar is needed. Especially when you do get a bit older.

The tacoma at the stock height is kinda awkward to get in and out of when using step bars. For some, the truck sits too high so they buy these, then they have a hard time getting in because when they step on the step bars they now have to bend over to get into the cab.

I know it’s a very subjective matter, but I feel that lifted or not, no side steps ever ever. Use real rock rails if you are going off road, but it defeats the purpose of adding height by then putting extra edges and metal in the way if you add it back with steps. I’m 5’ 7” and have a lifted Tundra and lifted 4Runner and my wife and I get in and out of both fine using either the grab handle or the steering wheel. My 7 yr. old daughter can hop up fine too using a grab strap. My wife also hates them as they hit the back of her pants when getting it and out at work. If you pull in to my local off road shop with a lifted truck and side steps, you better be prepared for them to be getting the wrenches out immediately to remove them.

I just got a non-lifted 2022 TRD Sport with oversized tires and the same side steps. I’m 5’ 10” and I use the step to get in and out because I think it saves the wear on the leather seat. Otherwise I wouldn’t need it. Just my theory :)

@@RobMotive while you’re here I’d love your opinion on another Tacoma upgrade I’m looking for. I need a really good leather or vinyl seat cover. Like, just the seat. I don’t need one that covers the entire bucket seat. The slick surface helps me slide into and out of my older vehicle (an old reliable Corolla), and I need something similar for my Tacoma. My Corolla came with leather but I definitely don’t want to spend the $400 or more for leather Tacoma seat covers. Thanks!

I don't like the look or function of the predator steps on my Tundra. Came that way, I plan on changing to Nerf bars at some point. My Tundras high enough steps are helpful. Getting out I have to go slowly because I always miss the step.

The wider , flatter boards are the easiest to hit IMO. But I do like the looks of the predators better.

@@RobMotive I have severe back issues and getting in/out of truck can be difficult sometimes. Climbing in they work well, getting out I've slipped a few times. My wife loves them. Side steps and running boards are for skirts. Ditch the steps and you won't hit your head getting into the truck. 5'11" here with a 4" lift. Never had steps. They're ugly anyways and they usually end up rusting and looking like shit.

have the same Predator steps on my 4Runner. I'm 6' and use them... it's easier getting in and out using the steps, I have no grab handle. yeah, I could manage fine without them but they do make it easier to get in. I put my right foot on the step, plant my butt in the seat, then swing my legs in.

Amp steps are nice but pricey. They conceal when doors are closed and drop when doors open. For me it's the girlfriend or the mom that needs steps when trying to get into a lifted truck. Also dont grab the steering wheel when entering your truck.

My Tacoma had the same steps as your tundra, i removed them the first week i had the truck. I can get in and out of the Tacoma way easier with no steps at all! the entrance door of the Tacoma is too short, when you step up on the running board your looking all the way over the top of truck and have to squat down and into the truck. also i do a lot of off road overland use and side steps will get you hung up off road...for me the Tacoma is way better with no steps. (i got some for sale cheap!!)

Rob, Enjoy your channel . Bought my second Tacoma , a 2019 this past fall. Sold my 2011 with 50,000 miles to a nephew. Didn’t notice the 2019 has a much higher bed than the older 2011. Wished I noticed that before I bought it. I find it’s harder to reach into the new bed to retrieve things as well as crawl into the back of the bed as this Tacoma is also higher. Don’t think the new one is raised. . Do you notice if Toyota raised the height of the two model years between the 2011-2019? Thanks, David Watson

I’d like to think I have the best of both worlds. I have complete clearance on my lifted Tundra for when I’m off road, but then I have them when I’m ready to get in and out of the Tundra as well. “Amp Research Steps” are the way to go if you want them but don’t want them too. 😁

The electric version is the best of both worlds. I wonder how reliable they are and if they ever freeze in winter?
@tundrawhisperer4821
@tundrawhisperer4821 5 лет назад
RobMotive , Great question and here’s my answer. My brother has now had them for 9 years on his Ram. He has them in sub freezing temps all the time, he lives in Montana, where it gets very cold at times. Never an issue. That’s why I decided to go that route myself. They are proven. And I love the lock feature, when you want to wash them, just deploy them out apply light weight on them with your foot and close the door. They stay down for you to wash. Then just open your door to reset and they retract back up into the storage position. It would be a great Mod video too, you know, for the channel! 👍🏻
@RobMotive
@RobMotive 5 лет назад
Good to know. I would have thought ice frozen around them would stop them from going down.
@tundrawhisperer4821
@tundrawhisperer4821 5 лет назад
RobMotive not an issue, unless your arse deep in it then. 😁 but even then you can put in an over ride switch that prevents them from deploying out. Plus, get this Rob, if you research them you’ll see the company offers a 5 year warranty! That’s just unheard of! They stand behind their product.
