hard2hurt Yep, the pens are DEFINITELY not ideal, but it's Something when you have to go somewhere that's a non-permissive environment. For many years now I always carry a decently blinding LED light everywhere I go. I do prefer bit beefier and gnarly light (compared to the one in your Flashlight vid) so that IF things do get really nasty, I can actually do some serious damage with the light it self. Also if I'm going somewhere I can't even carry a knife (much less a firearm) I'll usually just grab one of those kinda hefty all metal pens I have laying around to carry with me. Some those nicer pens (not made to be "tactical") can just about as effective as the purpose-built ones. Love the channel👊👍!! Keep up the great work! 🍻

hard2hurt What about the benefits of good sturdy boots? I like a pair that's reasonably light weight, but with a nice hard toe (NOT steel toe) and instep. I like the ankle support and stability, plus the ability and confidence to throw significantly harder kicks without worrying about breaking something in your foot as easily... Especially if someone is not super experienced/practiced with their kicks..? I know you love your Chucks, lol. But most of us aren't as skilled as you😜. 👍

@@SimplyFelix eh, id say like maybe a gun or a stick would be decent as long as someone has an idea of where to put it. pepper spray should be pretty easy since everyone has used lysol lmao. but beyond that, actual hand to hand combat weapons will not make someone any better than they were originally unless they really knew what they were doing. brass knuckles might be another exception because they dont really change your fighting form, its more like a passive damage buff to your hand, but then there's also the fact that they cut people open, and you dont want to have a lot of blood on you in a real life fight because a)stds and b) legal matters.

I love the way you guys interject humor. People take combatives training far too seriously; a lot of it is just plain fun and goofing around I do carry a tactical pen the Smith and Wesson. However I don’t carry it as a weapon but as a glass breaker. When a guy in the gym was trapped in his car that had flipped over and the electric windows would not go down and the door was jammed I saw the value in having one with you all the time; unless I was riding my motorcycle LOL

Exactly this. I’ve broken so many ink pens and reached in to a mess, or the threads jumped and I have all the parts loose in my pocket. I bought a tactical pen because I was tired of crappy plastic pens. I always carry one, but never intended to fight with it.

Whe I was in n prison, quite a few people got stabbed badly with pens. However, even if the pen doesn't break, the pen will rarely put someone down. If you're in a fight and the adrenaline is pumping, a pen sized hole likely won't stop you. On a side note, hard targets don't always push the pen out. It tends to veer off to one side or the other. One of the most gruesome injuries I saw was when a guy tried to stab someone in the eye. He missed, it glanced off the cheek bone, and wedged sideways under the skin.

Indeed we must master empty handed skills first and there are no shortcuts. Force multipliers are always welcome however. Nice thing about a stout pen is that we can take it into non-permissive environments. The fighting grip is thumb on top. Peace and health to you and yours.

Tactical Pen needs a key-ring or something to brace the impact during the strike. To prevent you from loosing the pen and to stop it from sliding back on impact.

Killed or injured* Using weapons, especially makeshift ones, ends up being a lot harder than amateur brawling (in the second case it's usually a matter of mindset and maybe some conditioning, most muggers aren't martial artists or security contractors lol). But if you lose in a brawl you will most likely end up with a few light cuts and a light concussion. When attackers see you try to harm them with a tool though, they tend to get pretty mad and they're usually not the types showing restraint. At least that's how it is in Poland (and yeah, here self-defence is not something you wanna do, especially with a tool. Any tool, even if its your glasses)

I've been in two separate situations where I used a blade to end altercations and one where I used a firearm. I can fight but when encountered by multiple assailants you may want something extra.

for a guy like me who has hand to hand training and decent AQ, but is pushing 45 and "not as young as I used to be" a tactical pen type of gadget can magnify the amount of force i can bring to bear quickly. Of course there has to be some CQB base to make any weapon function (for self defense)

It’s a grappling/trapping implement, stabbing is not its only function. Still, you have to know how to fight to use one. It takes many hours of practice. There’s no substitute for putting in the time. For those who know how to use it, it offers an advantage over purely bare hands.

It’s a force multiplier without a doubt. Have an a la carte approach of hitting sensitive targets: take what is available. Having said that, have a baseline understanding of how to throw hands and hit targets in general. No reason an amateur should elect *not* to carry one.

I just bought the NITECORE NTP31 which is aluminum for $26 versus the $100+ titanium NTP30, both have the same tungsten tip though, which besides a glass breaker, you could also use to scratch messages in emergency situations.

Whenever we want to train with knives, the topic comes up from time to time at my gym, we just use a sharpie marker for the knife, one in each person's hand. After about 15 seconds of knife techniques, it become pretty obvious that two people knife fighting will both f_ck each other up quickly. Both people get covered in ink almost immediately. It's better to carry a small gun than a knife, or a pen. A pen, like discussed in the video, should be relegated to "this is all I have, right now, in this moment". Practice time is best served by boxing, kicking, clinching, judo, jiujitsu. Funny at the end checking out your back. Amazing shot.

Good video. Tactical pen isn't much, but its still better than nothing. IMO, main use is that you can carry one in places where you can't have any real weapon. Also, there are way better designs out there than the one shown in this video. Some of these have thicker/knurled barrels that really don't slip in the hand and can let you get in a pretty hard blow.

You can also use a oval bic lighter in a fist at the middlefinger down so it sticks out a bit at the bottom of the fist. Hammerfist with pointy hard lighter corner

Try these grips. Get your standard ice pick grip, point with your index finger, then wrap the thumb over the top of the pen, then wrap your index finger around your thumb. The pen should no longer slide through your hand. However, the impact will be very painful on your thumb but if it's a life-and-death situation a little pain is a small price to pay. if you use a standard grip, rest of the butt of the pen on the the medial side of the most proximal bone of the pinky finger. This way works great but is also painful to the user. I also use these two grips on knives with small handles.

I have a tac pen, the #1 reason I have it is to know THAT IS MY PEN! I never forget it when I sign something. I Iooked at the one you are demoing, it is the "bolt action" and I think it comes in a few finshes. That model would go nice with a Coach wallet and a Breitling watch. If you are like me and are more of a Casio watch guy and can't afford the Breitling or Omega, then look for the $10 tac pen I bought.

OSS fighting system developed for ww2. That works for stuff that you can teach almost in a week or so. Hammer fist spike down with gross motor movement that uses the major muscle groups to fight. Icepick stab with it and hit the closest target to get it out of the way and stab something important.

Good points for any impact weapon. If you can't fight without it you wont be able to fight much better with it. That said, palm sticks are awsome if you know how to access and use them. Unfortunately even a lot of the people (myself included to an extent) who train how to use one dont train how to access it under stress.

@@hard2hurt Totally, in the clinch especially it can be good as a "space maker". One big problem I have with people (especially Kali people) feeling it's a "cure all" is that, in the UK at least, if you use anything and the police/courts feel that you were carrying it to use as a weapon (e.g. it's made by a tactical company) then you will likely be charged. Especially if while defending yourself you cause permanent damage or something like a facial laceration. They are great tools and can be justified as a weapon of opportunity but have similar issues to your points on the expandable baton. If you use one to do enough damage to stop someone it can be difficult to legally justify that level of damage.

I am a 70-year old woman and I got a NiteCore tactical pen a couple of months ago. I got it mainly for the glass breaker, but if I were attacked at least I would have something. I almost certainly wouldn't win, but you never know, I might land a hit by pure luck. Pure dumb luck does happen now and then. And I would rather go down fighting even if it were a lost cause. I think my best bet by far, though, is just stay out of dark alleys, ha.

You should get ballistic dummies for these. A lot of what you're saying is sensible and extremely legit. The times I have problems with your demonstrations is when you use hard objects against items like the tactical pen or karambit. I think there are some examples you've shown with hard objects like the shield that would be completely different against a human body.

I mean, its a really good weapon to balance out a disadvantage. I won't take my tactical pen and fight multiple opponents, but it gives me an advantage over not having that weapon. Of course I need to train with it, that's a given. A kubotan is pretty similar and that's actually something I carry with me. I have trained with it and I am able to do a lot more damage than without it.

Yu missed one importent option with it, a rather mild one: Take it in our fist (revers), put the pointy end on your opponents shoulder and apply pressure. It is surprisingly painful and works in most areas with bone directly under the skin. If it is a mild confrontation, like a drunk kid grabbing your shirt this use is far beneth a fiststrike (in terms of escalation) but can do the trick. Just hang with your bodyweight the pen in his shoulder. He is going to pull his body away, support this movenemt with a strong push. That gives you the distance you want. Yes you can poke an eye, but the nice thing is that you can be surprisingly painful with it without doing a lot of damage (often no damage at all).

I drive for a living. It is a stand-by weapon that has been very useful. But it must be in hand and ready to go.. You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT as far as having and be willing to fight.. Half hearted or questioning going into the scrap gets your ass killed or maimed..

I agree. in my last confrontation I was thinking about not hurting that person because of his family and less about my safety. I would not have been able to do real damage to him with a " Tactical Pen".

In Boot Camp we learned about the tactical thumb in a clench personally I always felt you shoot them before they got that close

FYI, if you’re athletic enough to put your butt in a seat and put your feet on the windshield, you can pretty easily push the seal out unless it’s underwater. I did it once with a badly cracked one so I could drive home freezing. I also saw a person do it on RU-vid and they didn’t look that strong. When I did it, I had very strong legs but I didn’t feel like it took much. Been shot in the legs since then so not so sure now, but still confident.

Watching this video till the end verified what I’ve always thought about tactical pens and the kubatons with the two prongs on the side an that is if you strike hard enough it could very well be used as a stabbing weapon (be careful because if you’re defending yourself in a fight and accidentally stab someone you just wanted to hit you could be facing some serious charges for that)

On some of these pens, the literature mentions the pen being a "DNA collector" where the hole is for the writing piece to poke out. All I can think of is if someone attacks and I pen them in self defense, the police are going to take my fancy tacticool pen away as "evidence".

You know that gross sticky warm feeling when you grab the convenience store pen? I don’t, because I carry a pen with me all day and use my own perfectly smooth one. A tactical pen, modified to take a fisher space pen refill, is the best pen you will ever write with. I carry a pen daily, and buy those cheap tactical pens but expensive brand refills. They write perfectly, feel nice in my hand, and never breaks when I smash it. I carry a knife and a gun for fighting, but the tactical pen is the best pen I ever used.

I have carried the same tactical pen for 15 years. I used it every single day. It was super effective. I was well trained in its use from the time I was in grade school. In fact, I would say I mastered the use of the pen. I still carry the same tactical pen now that I am retired. ....all this to say I JUST USE THE STUPID THING AS A WRITING INSTRUMENT.

I don't remember enough details to cite this story but here we go: I was listening to a reporter talk about being in tense situations in another country/war zone and saying that he avoided being kidnapped by using a regular pen to stab an assailant. Apparently the police arrived shortly after and did not jail him because he was unarmed.
