TAD: Busted Circuits and Ringing Ears - Found Tapes

Found Tapes is a new weekly show that highlights some of the rarest, wierdest, and sometimes just really cool videos that people send to us. This week, mosey back to the 90s and grab a front row seat to the rise and fall of Seattle grunge legends TAD.
Busted Circuits and Ringing Ears chronicles the band's ascent to become one of the most crucial bands of the grunge era, and delves into the legal troubles that embroiled the band's key members before its eventual disintegration. It's an itnrugiing, and tragic, story of what could have been. The hour-and-a-half documentary was produced by Ryan Short and Adam Pease and contains archival footage that spans the band's entire career, from the club days to the arenas. Interviews with nearly all of Tad's members past and present (save for guitarist Gary Thorstensen is a no-show) snag the spotlight, while the documentary also pulls from insightful interviews from some of Seattle's most respected musicians, including Krist Novoselic (Nirvana), Chad Channing (Nirvana), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Mark Felchtone (Zeke), and many others.
Get the inside scoop on everything from toe controversy over the cover art for 8-Way Santa and "Jack Pepsi" to the making of their classic God's Balls album and Eurpoea tour with Nirvana, and keep an eye out for the "Wood Goblins" video, which was banned by MTV for being "too ugly."

Tad, mudhoney, Melvin all should have been selling huge amounts of records but to me tad were the real grunge the big four of grunge were just pretty boys that’s why mtv and major record labels snatched them up it’s not about the songs it’s about the next rockstar look which sadly took center stage over actual talent and great songs hence tad mudhoney Melvins all the early bands got left behind when they should have been at the top
@swampshack1018

One of the things that I appreciate about it is not only the heaviness, but also the strange grooviness. I once read an article about how the members of TAD were possibly influenced by of all things, soul music. Which likely inspired the powerful rhythms and striking grooves on it. In addition to the clear heavy metal influence on the record through the heavy distortion and dense bass-and-drum sound.

I've always found it very weird that glam metal was called metal but bands like Tad, Soundgarden and AIC were called alternative rock or grunge or whatever. Especially when all 3 of them were heavier and had more actual metal riffs than any glam metal band.
@robwalsh9843
@robwalsh9843 4 года назад
That's why grunge bands shied away from being associated with metal, because the term 'heavy metal' meant Warrant, Poison, Winger, etc. In the sense of grunge bands being metal in the way that Black Sabbath and Budgie were, I think they were metal.
@ramonw9430
@ramonw9430 3 года назад
@@robwalsh9843 It's because that's what mainstream was at the time. Grunge was a sort of anti-metal. Being loud, long haired rock bands, they didn't want to be associated with glam metal and cock rock. Even though they were clearly influenced sonically by metal, they aligned themselves more with punk moral codes. Not exactly though because most of the grunge bands were on major labels at some point in their careers. Nevertheless, they went on to influence both rock and metal and are beloved by rockers and metalheads around the globe so that's all that matters.
@joehobbs3277
@joehobbs3277 3 года назад
You’d be wrong about that I don’t disagree with your comment at all I think as the 90s rolled around the first anyone had ever of grunge I believe was when Alice in chains released facelift which is more of a metal record but the term grunge had been around long before it became a thing and as we all know nirvanas nevermind apparently was the birth of alternative rock and grunge when in actual fact there were bands like tad like the melvins mudhoney skin yard the list goes on that were underground etc so it wasn’t anything new but when the big four released there main records people starting labelling everything as grunge alternitive rock. As for glam metal I agree there isn’t much metal in most of the bands that hit the scene at its peak but even I. That genre bands like twisted sister for example the first two records under the blade and you can’t stop rock and roll were far from the power ballad formular that plagued the later part of the 80s whille I certainly am not a huge fan of them there were a few really stand out ballads that actually meant something. If you want to hear a glam band that’s basicly glam and even thrash check out a band called nitro there first album is called out fucking ragious or O.F.R for short abd tell me what you think of it

It was loud as bombs with everyone jumping and stomping it seemed like the building might collapse. Grunge is the worst musical descriptor/ category ever. Nobody can agree on what it is. According to some people, there's only like 3 real grunge bands. Other people think it's a bunch of bands from Seattle (a lot of which have very little in common musically). It clearly means different things to different people. And I guess that's not surprising because it's a made-up word used to define *something* that definitely happened. But that *something* crosses over musically into other areas like punk rock and metal. Other genres are pretty clear, but the distinctive features of "grunge" change depending on who you ask. As seen by the above comments. So personally, I give up on trying to define grunge, I just don't care and it's a pointless exercise. I know what I like; don't need to define it. (Gotta say though, TAD are almost universally considered "grunge" by everyone, ime)
