The critique on Vingegaard from Pogacar and Remco was justified from their perspective. Tho from Vingegaard's perspective he did the right thing, which was losing no time and waiting till week 3 where he "possibly" has the better legs...
@joelecho
@joelecho 3 месяца назад
Yeah, it's strategically foolish for Jonas to pull with those two guys on a stage where they have an obvious advantage on him. Even if Jonas is 100%, he never wins out of a 3 up flat breakaway with Pog and Remco. They're two of the best riders in the world in that position. Of COURSE he's not going to pull with them.
@alexanderravn
@alexanderravn 3 месяца назад
@@joelecho Exactly, why would he help them on a stage that doesn’t suit him and suits them. And i think Remco’s comment about Jonas not having the “balls” to race is pure bullshit. Why would Jonas try to race in this stage? Like it doesn’t help him at all…

It's crazy to me how many people aren't realising that what Vingegaard did today was the SMARTEST thing he could've done. This isn't a stage that suits him AT ALL, while on the other hand it IS a stage that suits BOTH Remco and Pogacar very well. It would've been so STUPID for him to go away with and pull FOR them. Him and Visma are smart. If he had pulled with them, they 100% would have attacked him again, when Vingegaard's team was far away. Remco expecting Jonas to pull is so funny, of course he isn't going to, and I honestly don't think Pogi expected him to either.
@Pawsk

@J-cz7yv
@J-cz7yv 3 месяца назад
I think people do realize it. They just would rather see them ride and animate the race. Argument against for jonas riding with them… you get more of a gap on everyone other than Pog and Remco. Okay so now you say but Jonas isn’t concerned about them and only about Pog. Well I say okay well he loses another 10 bonus seconds to Pog in a sprint but gains maybe 1 minute on every one else. When last few days Visma/Jonas say they are happy where they are and expected to lose more time… what is another 10 seconds to Pog if you can gap everyone else by 1+ minute?
@martha7450
@martha7450 3 месяца назад
@@J-cz7yv I don’t think Jonas cares about everyone else. I am pretty certain that Visma only sees Pogacar as a real threat for the GC. Sure Remco is able to keep up with them right now, but I don’t think they expect him to in the mountains. But who knows, maybe he will surprise.

It might be boring, but playing to his strengths is how Jonas keeps himself in the mix; these types of stages are not for him. As we learned in Rocky 5, don't have a street fight with a street fighter. If he decided to fight with Remco and Pogi today, it could have been game over for his Tour. Evenepoel was strong today, but I would add that Vingegaard actually saved him from losing time. In the last 50k Evenepoel started almost every gravel section in the back of the group. And in every turn he lost places and often he had to close gaps after the turns. If Vingegaard would have gone for it, Pogacar would be 2mins+ ahead, with both Evenepoel and Vingegaard losing time. Vingegaard ows a lot to his teammates. And Evenepoel ows a lot to Vingegaard's teammates. But physically, Evenepoel looks in really great shape!

I think Evenepoel was thinking more about winning the stage at that point. I don´t think he realized that actually it meant more than that. I Think he should´ve keep attacking regardless of Jonas helping or not, cause this could be his last chance to do so. when the high mountains arrive again, Jonas and Pogi will be for sure strong, but they will also have massive support from Their teams, Evenepoel won´t. If he attacted he would have the help of Pogi, probabaly Evenepoel would lose the stage, but maybe gain some very important time on Jonas to manage in the mountains.

From a spectator pov it was fantastic. I don’t know if a gravel stage belongs in a road bike race. I’m torn on that because it risks having riders lose by punctures and things out of their control vs. skill. I guess I approve cobbles because there have always been cobbles. I enjoyed today because good riders didn’t lose out due to mechanicals. I would not have if a major GC rider was out due to today.

Jonas knew this wasn´t his day to attack, Visma was relentless in protecting their #1 and they ended up as the winners of the day. For Jonas not to lose any time on this stage was a small miracle and that can be crucial for his aspirations later. Pogi was again spectacular, he is a joy to watch. His mindset is just about attacking, his self-belief is insane and he would probably win this stage if wanted to. I really enjoyed Remco´s stage, he has no pressure at all, just enjoy every moment and gather experience for the future. We all know he has the legs but the Tour is long. I thought this was the perfect stage for him to attack and he should´ve done more. I´m not expecting Remco to keep up with Jonas in the high mountains, he really should´ve try to break away on that stage cause it could very well be his only chance.

Vingegaard wasn't on the wrong bike, just not his bike. He was on Tratnik's bike as planned in case of a falter. As Jorgenson stated in the post race interview, Tratnik's job was to be on Jonas' wheel in case he needed a bike, as the two have nearly identical saddle heights. The reliably goofy Peacock commentators were asserting "wrong bike" as well, but it was obvious Jonas was comfy on the bike, just not so comfy on some of the gravel sectors. I don't know what the conversation was with the GC leaders and the break, but it probably went something like "dudes, you're gonna take the podium, must you take this stage that we've worked so hard for?"

I seriously dont get yalls stance on vingegaard. People lose their shit over how good pog is, and rightfully so. Hes probably the best rider Ive seen in my 34 years on this planet. And then people go ahead and call vingegaard boring for just doing whatever he can to stay competitive with pog. Like, what more do you want? Vingo riding like an idiot on stages that dont suit him, lose the gc, have pog do another snoozefest tour thats decided with several weeks to go? Remco folds on the first big mountain we all know that… If you love pog so much, you should WANT vingo to do well, like in boxing, riders are measured against their biggest rivals. And pogs legacy will only get better with a strong rival

Poggi and Remco both cried after the stage because Jonas didn't pull. Why would he? Even if he was on 100 pct, he would still lose in a sprint against those two and thereby lose bonus seconds. Ad to that, that he is still recovering from his horrific crash in the Basque, and is surely hoping for week 3 of the Tour.

Jonas and Visma want to put to attack on the late big mountain stages so of course Ving was never going to pull. V-lab were also by far the strongest team in the peloton with Jorgeson, Van Aert, Kelserman, and Laporte so of course he would use that to his advantage. I’m sure remco hated doing 5 ITTs today trying to hawk down Pogi because his team isn’t built for these stages. People hate Visma for being boring but the truth is that their team tactics are always in the interest of Jonas. People act like this isn’t a team sport and want Jonas to go bananas with 2 of the best one day racers in the world; he has nothing to gain. After all, it’s no coincidence that he has won the last two TDFs

Sure, Jonas' strategy is understandable and "smart", agreed. And yet, it just makes him a much more boring rider to watch vs. Remco and Pogi. It's a professional sport and winning at the end is all that counts from one pov - but from the pov of fans and spectators (who largely make this sport what it is), Pogi and Remco simply do more for the spectacle that everyone, including Jonas, benefit massively from.
@jonaslind7085
@jonaslind7085 2 месяца назад
Even though I cheer for Jonas (hey - I’m dane and my name is Jonas - sue me) I agree with you. Pogi is the most entertaining top tier GC riding I can remember seeing in TDF. He is just amazing in his aggressiveness - and it makes for a real spectacle. But only if there are people who can defend - otherwise he would just dominate and that would be boring too in its own way. There are way fewer stages where Jonas can attack - but if he has the legs he will. And then he will make those stages exciting. But for the majority of stages, pogi is just more entertaining. Agreed.

Even if he had the legs, pulling on a stage like this with Remco and Pog who are favoured on this terrain is stupid. So what, so they can take bonus seconds on him at the finish line? He's going to burn a bunch of matches for the glory of it all, so that Pogacar who went 80 solo at Strada, or Remco who is the most aerodynamic man on earth, can drop him after they're off the front and end the tour? Jonas pulling with them would be an unbelievably embarrassingly bad tactical decision. Madness.

The final winner is so hard to predict and I love it: I’ll say the odds are 70% Tadej 25% Jonas and 5% Remco Most things point towards Tadej, being up early not recovering from a crash. Even further the script is flipped compared to previous years. Visma LAB's lackluster team(in the mountains) can hinder the potential for Vingegaard cracking Pogacar in the third week. Maybe Jorgenson can do something, but I doubt it. However I believe, if played right, the emergence of Evenepoel and the return of Roglic can play in to the hands of Vingegaard. He has to keep them close in the GC. If they have strength they might be able to attack the two favorites. In this case it’s vital for Jonas to not react and let Pogacar chase them. In the end it’s Tadej's tour to lose. In other words. Jonas needs to be willing to lose the podium to win the race. In case of a no Pogacar reaction Vingegaard needs to call his bluff, Tadej has the most to lose. This is the best hope Jonas has to put pressure on Tadej even without a strong Sepp Kuss or Van Aert. Still I’ll say Tadej is more likely to win, Jonas still needs to crack him. There are questions if he will have his usual edge in the third week, and rightly so. A lot of things has to go wrong for Tadej, but it can happen and that is the fun part.
