I enjoyed your review. I am pretty much a traditionalist in my watch collecting. I love iconic pieces and their history. For me the history of the house and the origins of the piece makes me feel like I have a bit of history on my wrist and I really enjoy that. I have a 1966 speedy with a 321 movement and I love it. I am currently on the hunt for a monaco calibre 11. They obviously both have their place in horological history and in my collection ... I appreciate both movements as well. It's hard to make a case for one over the other. George Daniels, Jack Heuer or recognizability between round icon and square or more or less decorated movement .... At the end of the day you can not go wrong either way. ENJOY!

Saw and tried the Monaco at my AD recently. Magic presence and comfort on the wrist, so new project has started to get one. The Omega is just another round watch and I already have plenty of them.

OMEGA is just to plain,but that Tag I've had on my wrist looks so different and makes your collection more diverse.

They are both nice watches but I think I would get the Monaco.

Another great comparison, Bruce, thank you. Guess I'd rather have the TAG Autavia Heritage Chrono, but I can see the attraction of both, and yeah, having both would be a powerful punch to a collection!

Both watches are excellent and true iconic pieces but for me you can spot a Monaco from across the room its got should an iconic look. I have both watches so can give a fare and honest view. Just purchased the new Monaco Dark Lord and it is stunning. With the newer 02 movement it definitely has the better engine. But Speedmaster’s are awesome watches its all down to personal choice. I personally love the Monaco with a leather strap it makes the square shape really pop but again it’s personal preference. Great review.

Speedy all the way. I've had a Speedmaster for 29 years - Hesalite, 861 movement, etc - I'd wanted one since 1969 and in '93 decided to stop saving up and just bought the thing. I've lusted after the blue Monaco for many years - on a leather strap - because of it's unique looks and heritage as one of the first auto chronos..... Last Saturday I got to wear one for a while. Speedy is a straightforward reliable piece of kit, Monaco looks really great with a strap but slightly tacky with the bracelet. It seemed enormous and I have 8 1/4 inch wrist, it looks very 1970s so plays that part well. Each to his own: I bought a Carrera instead.😃

I got the same speedmaster and the box is absolutely insane! The box’s of omega watches are just a work of art. I recently purchased the ultradeep and inside the box there another box which the watch sits in and it folds up as a travel box….crazy insane

Funny you mention these two. I've wanted both the heritage Monaco and the Speedy for two years now though it never occurred to me to compare them. Both icons, can't lose with either. One thing: I just wish the Monaco could lose 1 mm in thickness. Otherwise it's awesome.

Monaco for me, although I’d like to see them relaunch the 73633. The CS2111 didn’t quite do it for me in the same way the Calibre 12’s have.

Out of these two, I think it would be the Speedmaster for me, but I really love my El Primero. It's a watch I can just stare at all day long, appreciating different aspects of it that I notice and I'm still noticing! Also, the story of Charles Vermot is a true heroism of watchmaking. :-)

Bruce, I think it damns the El Primero with faint praise to not point out that the El Primero was truly unique, the first integrated automatic chronograph movement. The Monaco, while horologically significant, was a modular movement. That is a real difference and achievement that should be recognized.

We need both

I’m not particularly liking chronographs entirely. That being said, I do believe omega to be a stronger brand with richer history and diversity thus being a better proposition.

Id pick the speedy all day long but im biased because i own one. The Monaco is probably a great watch and its probably nice using that column wheel but you can't beat the speedy. Walter White wore the Monaco in Breaking Bad. I go through phases in my watch collecting. Sometimes im in a dress watch phase or a diver phase. Right now im in a chronograph phase and ive really been enjoying wearing some of my chrono's lately. I just love the complicated movements and the cluttered but very legible dials. I love the history and use of them. I have been wearing my Speedy and Sinn 356 alot on weekends. During the week im wearing the flightmaster as my beater watch working construction in Philadelphia.

Watch people know about the Speedmaster. Watch people are a tiny percentage of the population. To everyone else it's a round watch. That's it. The Monaco looks like NO other watch. Looks Amazing. Juss sayin'

Fair comparison but I tried on a Monaco before and it look weird to me... think it really need a lot of getting use to the square shape unlike the Cartier Santos which looks beautiful on the wrist IMO even though its also square.

Don't run with the herd so it's the tag for me. 😉 Blue dial monaco out next year would definitely be the one I would go for.

While I like both these watches, the Omega wins this duel in my opinion. I think the Heuer Autavia would be a winning choice for me as it is a watch from my earliest days watching Grand Prix racing in the 60s.

Speedy is iconic, but everyone and their mother has one. Monaco is iconic in its own right, so I would pick that

Speedmaster racing is a true motoring chronograph although the pros history was with motor racing not space

Both iconic chronographs. The Speedmaster is more historically important and practical for daily wear.

Monaco, all the way. The first chrono, racing pedigree of Heuer, Steve McQueen, unique design, “in your face” attitude, Heuer02 calibre. It is a watch for those, who does not “go with the crowd” and can stand for his choice. Omega is too “common”: a conservative design, constantly repeating Apollo 13 story, pretty old movement, although well decorated. So, everything what a “nice guy” needs :)

Well... one of those is an absolute brick, and the other is a nice watch.

One has tachymetre the other does not. Tachy wins for me

It's the Monaco for me

I've always been fascinated by the Apollo missions, so naturally my dream watch was the Speedy. As I got nearer my goal of buying one (i.e. acquiring enough money) I also started looking more and more into mechanical watch specifications and watch history and design in general. I finally ended up buying the Monaco with the in house Heuer 02 movement. I guess in the end the design was the deciding factor. Don' get me wrong, I still think the Speedy is a true icon and a great watch with a formidable history, but next to the Monaco is just looks... dull. Of course, that is a personal observation, not an objective fact. Since I bought the Monaco I've compared it with the Speedy a couple of times, to see if buyer's remorse would set in (especially since I lusted after the Speedy for so long, so changing my mind even surprised me a bit). But nope... the longer I have the Monaco, the more I love it.

I'd go with the Monaco but preferably the blue dial model. Love the squarish shape of the case.

I own the speedmaster hesalite since a year now, but I’m not a fan of this Heuer sorry (specially with this bracelet). The 2 tag Heuer that I love (or loved because it could be vintage) are the camaro or the new tag Heuer 160 years silver edition, sorry 😐

The Monaco looked so ugly when i first saw it but it looks better everytime i look at it, i would perfer the monaco. It's a special watch

I prefer the Monaco, by far, much more original, the speedmaster is very nice but is a common design, it’s just all the marketing behind it that makes it popular, nothing against it, to each it’s own

Two of the most recognizable iconic pieces, both superb entry level horology. My first choice would be the Omega moon watch, second by choice the Tag Heuer 12mm. Both of exeptionally good taste

A better comparison would have been the Heuer Monica Calibre 11- not the “TAG” version. Icon to icon, more history , more provenance. Good piece though.

I don’t mind the Monaco, but also do not love enough to wear one. I love the Speedmaster, but because it does not have a date, I have bought it. I bought a Daytona & sold it for the same reason.

The Speedmaster is a genuine icon, (rightly so) recognised by non watch people & WIS alike. The Tag is just a big square watch. No competition. Cheers 👍🏻

Both watches have been wore by actors but Speedmaster went to the moon. I Am sick and tired of hearing that because a watch was on an actor’s wrist it makes it a legend,is not. Not the Monaco or the Rolex Daytona and any other watch for that matter. I guess people already forgot that Tag Heuger used plastic parts on some of their watches and that some of the parts on the movements were glued on and that’s the reason why people who know watches don’t buy them and don’t respect the brand. Can’t compare good quality to crap.
