Damon diadema, or tailless whip scorpions, or whipspiders, are not spiders or scorpions, but are otherworldly arachnids that make interesting pets. Damon diadema is one of the most commonly kept amblypygids. If you’d like to learn more about Damon diadema, check out this video!
Here is the linkmfrom which I learned about using polystyrene foam (styrofoam) as a background for Damon diadema enclosures:

Thank you very much! I was looking to get one soon, so far I've only kept Tarantulas. Your video was perfect, it provided all the information I could ask for. And I also see in the recommendations, that you have other videos about some special inverts (eg Vinegaroon), so I will definitely subscribe and look into those eventually. Very well done!

@@Aquarimax Now I slept it over and I actually did have some more questions pop up in my head: 1. Do they have higher temperature requirements or do they do just fine at room temps? 2. Is there differences in lifespan between males and females? 3. How often do you feed them?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 года назад
MYTH||SE7EN They tend to do fine at room temperatures, but mid to high 70s is ideal. They slow down a lot when it is in the 60s, and they can get too hot in the 80s. As far as I know, there is no difference in lifespan in males and females. They do not have a terminal molt like tarantulas do. I feed them about once a week to every 10 days, less often in the winter. 👍

@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 8 месяцев назад
Some species can be with great success. Damon diadema can when very young. Once they get to be subadults, it is best to separate them. A breeding pair can be kept together with some risk…they are usually fine until one molts, and then may be disturbed and fall, or may be eaten.

@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 года назад
AverageAlarm511 It depends on the species and age. With Damon diadema, the youngsters can live with the mother for a while, but after a few instars, they should be separated from the parents. Then as adolescents, they get a bit aggressive for a while...and need to be kept singly, or in sexed pairs. There is some controversy about whether sexed pairs should be kept together or not. There are other species of tailless whip scorpions that are more truly communal, such as Phrynus marginemaculatus.

At home I noticed the female is wearing a nice dark broodsac, but the male looks very skinny to me. I have not got them to eat yet. The male refuses it's prey. I don't know wether they are captive bred or wild caught animals, i think wild caught. The male does seem to drink water from wet surfaces and today it even looked like he was eating substrate. @ShaneVanDerWal 5 лет назад
@@Aquarimax Thanks for responding! The male has eaten 2 crickets right after each other (: The female looks well fed so they are doing fine now. They are by far the most interesting animals I have kept so far. I keep them in a pretty large enclosure (70cm high and 50cm wide), al sides are made of material they can walk on. There is wood and bark they can hide under/behind. Plants that they use for drinking the water droplets off after I mist them. I read the book 'Breeding the world largest living arachnid' which provided me an amazing sources of information. The male I have is not the male that fertilized the female so I have some different bloodlines going on here. Anyway! Large enclosure that includes a small light at night that is dark enough for them to know it's night time and just provides enough light to watch their active behaviour. For feeding I use a smal aquarium, I will just leave one in there over night with a cricket. It is just easier that way for me to tell wether the cricket has been eaten and for the whipspider to find the cricket.

I have a tailless whip scorpion that I got four years ago and it was about the size of a dime. It is still about the size of a dime. I do not know what I am doing wrong obviously I'm doing something wrong because it is not growing and I think it is only molted once since I have had it. I feed it small cricket but I have never seen it or even hunt a cricket. Obviously it is eating something or it would not still be alive.

@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
I do have a slanted piece of cork bark for that. Too many hiding places can actually be a problem, as it can interfere with molting.
@nathanrupley
@nathanrupley 3 года назад
@@Aquarimax Oh. ok. I was worried there. You showed multiple set ups, and there was only a hide visible, and referenced, for the breeding enclosure. Glad to hear you keep a hide in all of you enclosures. As far as too many hides causing issues for molting, how would that be the case, if a reasonably large enclosure was used? I have to say, I wonder if the issue is using those tiny containers. Based on their natural history, I use a 12x12x18, and will go bigger when I have the space. Sure, they hide in small spaces during the day, but at night, they move around. Anyway, I appreciate all I have learned from your channel, just disagree on the husbandry of this species.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
Plenty of room for friendly differences of opinion in this hobby 👍🏽. I personally have never witnessed any molting issues in smaller or larger enclosures with any of my Damon diadema, from tiny whiplings to adults, but I have heard of others having issues with too much ‘clutter’ in the enclosure. My use of the small enclosures was based on enclosures Gil Wizen developed. Gil breeds and keeps a wide variety of amblypygids, and has had success with the smaller containers for Damon diadema and some other species. That said, the enclosure I use now is a 12” x 12” x 12” cube with cork bark lining 3 sides and a slanting cork hide.
@nathanrupley
@nathanrupley 3 года назад
@@Aquarimax Yes, plenty of room for differences of opinion. Glad to hear you have moved to a 12x12x12. It is great to take knowledge from breeders, they tend to have lots of experience. That being said, coming from the snake hobby, to inverts, I can say that it seems like success in breeding seems to have more to do with dialing in basic minimum care, rather than advancing the hobby.
