Feel the same way! I am going to take vacation next week and dive into this game so I separated everything today. I thought I had an idea as to what was going on but Paul just set me straight LOL
Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together. You are a superb teacher (says a teacher).
I played the tutorial last night and had some difficulty understanding diplomacy. Your explanation helped me understand it better. I am planning to start a campaign this week. Thanks for the video, very informative as usual.
This is so clear and concise, thank you so much! I had to watch the combat explanation about 4 times to and then it clicked. What an interesting mechanism!
GREAT Vid... The one thing I am not sure about, to activate a Menhir, in say a three player game do you need all three in the same location, or only one (with the others using food, magic etc.. to the character at the locatiion).
According to the rules all characters must be present. But note that costs can be shared. So if I have no magic and Another character has 2 magic and the cost is one per player that character can donate magic for me, same with all the required items, energy, food, wealth, etc... However, I like to play on story mode, and have further house ruled it that we don’t all have to be at the Menhir. But the official rules say yes, all must be there.
Clearly the best rules explanation on youtube. This confirms the intuition I had following your Sanctum video. And as a non native speaker, your English is easy to follow. Thank you Paul >.
In your example of Diplomacy, you connected Empathy twice though the Attribute Level is only one. The rulebook criminally fails to explain Attribute Levels as they pertain to resolving combat/diplomacy. So, how many Aggression Bonus Keys could I connect if my character had 2 points of Aggression? What is the limit? And is that per turn or per encounter? If it is only two, then it seems like your diplomacy contradicts this.
Brilliant tutorial... But one query please. In Diplomacy, why is does the enemy respond after playing the Eye For Detail card, ending the turn when there were still cards that could be played in the hand...
ive been preparing for a little while to kick off a solo run of maggot and arev, having played 7th continent a bit the game pretty much seemed familiar while i have been learning but the combat just made no sense to me until i watched this video, cheers
here is the problem i tried to play the tutorial and it has things differently that this video is this the standard mode? Also why in the name of they have 4 different helper cards but only one overview combat? can you play tutorial with 2 or more people or it just one? it sets like it is only with beor or something
Hi, great video as usual! I relly enjoyed your iss vanguard playtrhough, it helped me settle my knowledge of the rules. Btw, quick question, what brand of sleeves are you using? Thanks!
Would you kindly please if you have the interest and time make an updated video including rule changes to 2.0? Addendum to a user's below comment: I am asking, not telling 😄
I think some other channels have already done that, or the information is out there in written form if people need it. I don't have time in my schedule I'm afraid to create this video at the moment.
Sorry for the delay. Just seen this message. When I play the Throw card, it is the snake symbol on the left which connects to the cube on the Throw card - thus, I get a cube. The 2 snakes to the right is the start of the next key. On its own, it does nothing; it only affects the next card played. And 2 snakes means you must have a practicality of at least 2 to connect that key. Hope this helps.
soon going to dive into the world of Tainted Grail (finally!), it's been just over 3 years since I own this game.. ooops! :) this video helped a lot understanding the rules, looking forward to your how-to-play-videos every time!
That's not quite true. You are both fighting it at the same time. I've played the game for about 80 hours, at 2-player, and 90% of the time we stuck together. The fights are very much a co-operative thing - you take it in turns to play cards, but it is one big fight.
Question about combat at 26:47 please. If the hero is successful and "receives" the reward and "shares" the loot on the combatant card, in this example does this mean the hero gains 1 Exp and everybody gains 1 Food? Just trying to clarify the difference between Reward and Loot.
I have a question about buying new cards for the combat and diplomacy decks. After choosing one of the three cards, should I shuffle it into my combat or diplomacy deck, lay it on top, or maybe slip it somewhere in the deck? I was looking for answers everywhere but unfortunately I did not find it. The Rulebook does not explain this clearly enough. Cheers! :D
Filip Koziarzewski you actually shuffle your combat / diplomacy deck at the start of each combat / diplomacy. So it doesn’t actually matter where you put it when you buy it. I like shuffling, so I always shuffle it in when I buy it.
@@GamingRulesVideos Could you please indicate where the information about deck shuffling at the start of the fight is in the rulebook? Honestly, I only find the rule about shuffling the deck after the fight is over.
Filip Koziarzewski ok, so technically, you shuffle at the end of a combat, not at the start. But when you buy a new card, it is shuffled in. So we just always shuffle at the start of combat.
Yes, Rewards scale to party size, so everyone receives it. Loot is shared. So, in the example, at 26:45, all party members receive 1 Exp and the 1 Food is shared (in other words only 1 person gets the food). See rules pg. 14 for one reference, "Reward & Loot. What you get for defeating this enemy. Rewards apply to each player, and Loot needs to be shared between Party Members."
I got a question about avoidance in Diplomacy encounter: Is it per player or for the whole party? Also, does the requirement is if at least one character have it or does each character need to pass the requirement in order to pay the cost and avoid the encounter?
Playing this game after a long time, I needed a tutorial to show some folks who have not seen this gem of a game yet. This was such a high quality HtP!
You do not have to take actions in order. That bit in the rules is just a guideline to help mitigate downtime. It's been clarified by the designers that a character can take multiple actions in a row if the group is in agreement.
Kenny Felts yep. Isn’t that what I said? I’m just going off what is in the rulebook. The script for this video was approved by the publisher so I’m not sure exactly what you mean. In order to reduce downtime, players can take actions at the same time, but each character can only act once per round. As in my example, a character can act twice consecutively, but not more than once each round.
There's no such thing as a "round" of actions. A character can take as many actions in a row as they desire as long as the group agrees. The concept of taking turns in a "round" is only to help groups mitigate downtime and not required. I know the rulebook says otherwise but the official FAQ says (quoted) "The one action at a time is only meant to manage the downtime. It is should never prevent you from strategizing or cooperating with your team". An earlier line says a character can take two actions in a row but does not limit how many times you can take 2 actions in a row. If the group agrees, a character could take 5 actions in a row.
@@PickleTheHutt Well, like I said, I went with the rulebook because that is what I was asked to do. And the script and video has been checked and approved by the publisher and the maintainers of the FAQ so I'm not really sure what else I can say. Maybe contact them about it.
@@PickleTheHutt Yes, this is correct. Taking the day in rounds is optional but suggested unless a character wants to join others for an action and they need to move more than once.
Probably a silly question but if you're playing solo, can't you just rest to get rid of the "you are dying" effect? Unlike the co-op card it doesn't prevent you healing from resting. Are solo players more or less invincible as a result?
You can, yes, but when you rest various things (such as the Menhir) advance, and most of them are a race against time when you play. Losing a significant portion of a day due to resting cuts down on the total actions you can take before the Menhir winks out, and you start taking terror and damage every day. So, you're correct, but it will still be a punishing scenario.
I've à question for you.. For instance, during a combat, if you have only the free key bonus which can be connected.. Does it work ? Or you must have to connect at least with one of your skills... Thanks.
@@GamingRulesVideos I got it.. But my was question about, what's happen next.. When you have already played two or three cards and the next you can play it's only a card witch can be connected only with the key bonus.. Is it possible ?
@@romainformet4346 Each time you activate, the first card you play can be anything. After that, every other card you play must connect a key with the lightning bolt icon.
@@GamingRulesVideos i got the same question as romain but i understand now. The free action alone doesnt count on the second + card because it dont came with a lightning symbol. 31:05
@@dizisarn not quite true. The first card can be anything at all. Nothing needs to connect. Every other card IN THE SAME ACTIVATION must connect at least 1 lightning bolt. So in order to play DEFEND, I needed to pay 1 Magic to connect the Magic key, which had the lightning bolt. However, that DEFEND card didn't do anything directly because the free key at the bottom was empty. It still connected though, and if it showed a cube, I still would have added a cube. However, the DEFEND card meant that I took 2 fewer damage.
Question: the combat instructions say to play 1 card, any additional card required the lightning card icon. However, in the tutorial you make it sound like you get the first card (Surprise Attack) was free, since you add more card without any lightning icon present. Could you confirm please? Thank you EDIT: just re watched it, you could if you paid that MAGIC, correct?
Do you have the timestamp for this so I can check? The first card you play each turn does not require the lightning bolt - only subsequent cards in the same turn. Does that help?
@@GamingRulesVideos wow that was a fast reply. thanks. 23:45 you play surprise attack and say "the first card you play can be anything" when going back to the board at 24:25, a second card is there (Defend) Just checking how it got there, was Surprise attack a free card? I dont understand how you can play Defend on the same turn, was it played on the next turn? Thanks again.
Never mind, I got it on the example. The lightning icon can be on the second card you play, not necessarily on the first one. As long as they connect and you have the cost, you are golden. Thanks for the video, great explanation. We started playing it last night, we came across a combat card with the phrase "lose 3 charges" would you know what those charges refer to?
@@martinidamian Yep. So, two ways this could have happened. The Defend card could have been played as a second card on the first round of combat by paying a magic to connect the lightning bolt. Or, it could have been the only card played in the second round of combat.
@@martinidamian IIRC, charges are cubes on certain cards. So, there will be a card that you play which says "put 2 charges on this" - and then there will be a way to spend those charges (I think)
@@GamingRulesVideos I'm sorry but I am still confused. The Knot gets you the bonus shown on the enemy card right? So my question was, if that bonus contains a symbol what exactly does that mean. Do you get an arrow up for each point you have in that stat? Or is it each completed key with that symbol in the sequence? Or is it something else entirely?
@@GamingRulesVideos Then what do the Symbols in Front of the Arrow at 37:55 mean? There is an empathy symbol followed by two arrows. What does the empathy symbol signify?
@@megalukester98 If you look to the right, you will see that the empathy key is connected with the knot symbol. That means the effect triggers and you get two up arrows. If for example, you connected the spirituality key with a knot in it instead, nothing would happen. That cards needs empathy connected for stage 1. But... when you get to stage 2, you are trying to connect caution and spirituality with knot symbols.
