As a practising karateka (35 years and still doing it wrong)in Wado Ryu which focuses in taisabaki etc that was superb, it seemed so effortless. The big man with beard obviously knows his art.

Thank you for your comment. That is Ken Brink and he really does have an excellent understanding of Judo. I will pass your comment along to him. He will appreciate hearing it as he is really a quite and humble person.

As a smaller judoka, what kind of adjustments and considerations do I need when playing against larger, stronger opponents? Bc sometimes they dont move the way they "ought to" when i do generic tai sabaki, which leads me to think that there is suitable counterplay against an opponent who plants themselves in place. But im not sure what.

Often, the best way to move a larger opponent is to speed up the tempo of the action. When gripping, keep what is called a "long distance" between you and your opponent. In other words, make sure that there is a lot of space between you and your larger opponent. Doing this will usually negate his strength and allow you more opportunity to move him and attack with a throw. Hope this helps.

our coach, who is a 6th dan, has had us doing these very same things.

Sensei Gus is excellent. He competed in Europe and has taught all over the world. We are lucky he is with us. He has more judo in his little finger than I will ever know. It is interesting you guys doing many of the same things. Makes me want to pay more attention to the concepts.

Does taisabaki same with kata in karate?
@welcomematstevescott
@welcomematstevescott 3 года назад
I imagine so. It's the descriptive name for moving in a circular pattern.

Guys shouldn't we be twisting in the opposite direction? Shouldnt the lapelle hand lead? I'm confused..
@welcomematstevescott

@@welcomematstevescott I've been training for 3 years but only experienced the turning from the lapelle hand. I thought this is the only "correct" way to do it.

The best way to judge if something is correct is that if it works and works for you when you need it to work. Thanks for your comment!

@@FelixFrost in my experience the grips can change depending on what throw you are trying, if there is a combo, if there is a faint, and the grip fighting skill of your opponent. -- I see this technique used in both directions in the Olympics.
