I had a guy bring me a pair of carbs from a dual quad 427 last summer that were burned badly and had fire extinguisher debris sitting on them. I dumped and cleaned out my glass beads and changed my tip for Medium soda from HF. It worked amazing and I was able to save the main bodies, baseplates and metering blocks. Any good plating stays in tact unless you lay on it to long. I think you should try it out the next time you need to clean the inside of one like this. I would go to coarse for one as bad as this. Finish up with ultrasonic if you think any got stuck in the passages. On the Holleys I had good dry air and just blew them off.

Did you open the tiny passages in the back of the float bowl at 10 an 2 o clock that refill the chambers between the back of the bores and the secondary bores. This allows fuel into the chambers where the outer of the 4 brass tubes drop into. The middle 2 drop into the float bowls. The outer into the 2 odd shaped wells. As the secondary throttle blades start to open. There is not enough vacuum yet to pull the secondary air doors open. The vacuum pulls on the 2 holes at the front edge of the air doors. This prevents the engine from going lean as the secondaries start to open.

Been several decades since I’ve been inside a Q-Jet. I would’ve soda blasted that thing clean. Not saying you should’ve. Just what I would’ve done.

Make sure you tell everyone to file down the epoxy on the wells so the don't contact the base before the gasket seals. It bit me one time.

Hey Mr. Dallas I'm new to the channel but been wrenching since about 1965 in your opinion how much piston to bore clearance can I get away with on a stock 265 Cid chevy motor with stock pistons and ductile iron rings thanks in advance Donnie

Probably about .010 maximum and it’s gonna be noisy at startup. If you want to tighten that up for a reasonable price, coat the piston on the sides with some anti-friction material and take up a few thousandths.

@Mr. Rodder's Neighborhood thanks for the reply I wanted to knurl the piston skirts but I can't find the Damm tool. BTW much of the stuff U do on the channel reminds me of what REAL Hot Rodders did in my youth as poor coal miner's kids we used what we had. Ya know that ment using are brains crawling through junk yards. Not auto recycling centers. Trading hard work for parts. Now days shows like horse power Nation build engines that cost more than my 1st house....keep up the hands on stuff I'll stay tuned I tell my friends about the channel too....
