The audio is off. This was on a 3/4 broadcast umatic tape. Quality not so great. The show "Take 2" was on the air from 1989 - 1995 on Access Sacramento. This was No Doubts first interview after signing on with their record label .
100%. I tell my little girl, (now 13), about the early 90’s in Northern England, about rave culture and all the free parties, the readily available work, decent wages, low food prices, low gas prices, low housing prices, no mobile phones or social media. She doesn’t believe me. It must seem like a different world to her.
@@mdp4022 I’ll give you music but there was still too much of the women’s rights and civil rights stuff going on and the economy was shaky. 80s was incredible. Aside from that being the start of us being sold out to China.
Gwen with long hair looks so much like Alicia Silverstone. This is the first time I’ve seen her brother in an interview. It’s crazy to think in a few years they would become this massive band.
@@9852323 People move on in their lives, people age and not forever teens and 20s. People succeed. Being laid back and cool is simply a phase for many people especially in music BUSINESS industry.
she seemed like a timeless beauty but then she grew up and was no longer...sigh...timeless. people can be so cute when thy come out of nowhere. and then they get to be somewhere and stop being so cute. so it is.
Tony and Gwen are goals for people that used to date, went through a painful breakup and able to remain friends and bandmates. Mad respect 👏 These are great musicians and even better humans.
@@ChadwickTheChadit was! I was 24 in 1992. I remember seeing No Doubt in a local dive club (the Berkeley Square in Berkeley, CA) around 93 or 94. Gwen was wearing a red silk or satin pajama type outfit. They blew up shortly thereafter.
The 90s music scene was so diverse then, after the hair metal cliches of the late 80s flamed out. So many quality bands producing what would be classic albums. No Doubt always delivered a high energy show. Miss this era, plus punk and New Wave late 70s-mid 80s...
@@deathbygrinning While you were apparently paying attention to hair metal bands in the late 80’s, some of us were having our minds blown at little clubs seeing and hearing bands like Fishbone, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (with Hillel & Jack Irons), Jane’s Addiction, Marshall Law, Shrine, Spade Ghetto Destruction etc. 90’s are overrated. Other than a few good pop tunes, No Doubt kinda sucked. They heralded the period of bands playing ska and or punk in a watered down, poser sort of way. Think Blink 182, Green Day and Sum 41. 👎🏼
I find this look on Gwen much more appealing than any other style she's had. I felt the same with Lady Gaga in her role in "A Star is Born". Simple beauty maybe doesn't sell records but it's pure and unfiltered. That's very attractive, to me.
So many don’t realize some of the trends Gwen set back then. Her fashion was always cutting edge. The music video for Don’t Speak was so damn good. Especially the slow mo concert clips. And she and Tony managed to work through their break-up for her to go on and marry Gavin and become the sensation she was. 90s Gwen with the crop top and baggy pants and rhinestones glued on her face was really nothing people had done. Or at least nothing mainstream. Loved them back then. So much nostalgia.
Honestly I've knew and met LOTS of girls back in high school with a similar voice. Temecula's not too far from Orange County. None of them were interested in boring old me, but at least I got to talk to them a few times. My best friend and his girl at the time rented a cabin in Idyllwild and went to a bar there one night with some friends and got to randomly hang out with Adrian, Tom, and Tony.
@@emilycarter9376 And? What does being the main singer have to do with anything? Just because you're the lead singer it doesn't mean you're the leader of the band, therefore she doesn't deserve more attention than any of the other members. I'm sure gwen would've agreed.
@@keithharlow7482 Exactly. It would take a deluded moron to claim they got signed and became famous "JUST BECAUSE of her" that would be quite an ignorant and childish point of view indeed, considering the fact that they got signed because of their music. Which was due to the other member's of the band because at this time she didn't do any of the writing and she can't play an instrument. She wasn't even the only lead singer. Their popularly after they got signed however had a lot to do with her.
actually no. big fan of old school jaz and fusion. R&B and some hiphop - i'm a big digital underground fan! They were so awesome! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BwU8K9WF-bc.html@@rileyxxxx
I was such a diehard No Doubt fan. I just loved them so much. Gwen was (and still is) so amazing and ridiculously talented. I had the honour of seeing No Doubt play live in 2002 at Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia. To this day, it is still HANDS DOWN the best show that I have ever been to. I will never forget how hard they worked to put on the most amazing show. They were so professional and humble and the band was so tight. It was the only show that I have pushed into the front row for and I'm so happy i did. It is still so clear in my head and I can't believe it was 22 years ago! It feels like it was yesterday. Definitely a core memory forever
@@taragatorade The inspiration to be the best version of yourself, that includes: healthy diet, wroking out, not smoking, not taking drgs (in a industry that is full of sh*t), not drinking too much, skincare, be a good person, humble, down to hearth, always creating new trends, always smiling and the beautiful person she's always been reflects on the outside. That is the real reason why she looks so young at her 50's, not plastic surgeon, so yes, she's an inspiration to everybody.
character and personal choice is much different than the OP's description of "ageless". which is what I was commenting on. but thanks for the biography.@@IvyMuZYk
She's a vampire just like the rest of Hollywood. Definitely not a role model or someone to envy for her looks. Yes, she's beautiful and talented, but she's paid a huge price for her fame and youthful appearance.
You know Gwen doesn’t look that much different now. She’s a natural beauty. Maybe a little Botox and fillers in the past few years but she’s just stunning.
Nintariz of course she looks older, this interview was almost 30 years ago but for a woman over 50, she looks amazing with minimal work done to her face.
@D Leo with all the supposed work done she has managed to keep herself looking pretty normal vs some of those celebrities with botched plastic surgeries that now look like opossums lol
"I know he's very much against writing love songs like everyone else." Three years later they release Tragic Kingdom, an album filled with hit LOVE SONGS based on Gwen and Tony's failed relationship and the damn thing goes on to sell 17 million copies... just like everyone else. LMAO.
Um, thats why he left the band after they got signed.. he didnt write love songs, those were Gwen. He did write Tragic Kingdom, about Walt Disney's body being frozen and kept somewhere in Disneyland
@@ligeiaresurrected2274 That's not why he left the band. What the fuck are you talking about? He left because he wanted to pursue a career as an animator. He left and became an animator on The Simpsons. He also left because he didn't like the narrative of the band once they got signed because the band wasn't in full control anymore.
En las imágenes de esa época me recuerda a la protagonista de la serie Clueless. Gwen siempre ha sido muy hermosa y talentosa, tanto en la banda o como solista, tiene la capacidad de reinventarse todo el tiempo, simplemente la admiro!
I love these older videos if you even want to call them that old. It takes you back to that Nostalgia that you had growing up and as a millennial I can say that. BEFORE the internet, social media and cell phones. You used to have to WAIT to watch your favorite music video or show on the television, GOOD TIMES!!😀😀😁😁
No Doubt was a great band back then. When Eric was with them, the band made some great cutting edge music! After Eric left, they continued on, but the sound wasn't the same. No Doubt's first three albums are classics in my book.
Good Lord, I remember using that exact video editing software. Used it in 1993. Great to see some early No Doubt footage - even if it's just an interview. I only filmed them in '97 for a few minutes during a television rehearsal.
I worked with Tony Kanal in the men’s department at the Broadway and Gwen Stefani worked in the same store, the Children’s department to be exact where my wife was a manager. We moved back to NJ 1992.
Crazy how close Gwen came to just folding it up and being done with the music industry. Makes you wonder how many other talented artists never stuck it out or should i say "survived" long enough to break out. I know of 2 myself...
I love Gwen Stefani in as real a way you can a celebrity that you never met in person. Meaning I appreciate so many awesome and unique things about her that captivate me and I really admire a lot of her qualities aside from her outward physical beauty, which is second to none tho as well, lol. She's truly a special and amazing soul.
There are many Bands that I admire (of which No Doubt is in my top 5). This has to be one of the most interesting band interviews that I've ever seen on You Tube because it was an early clip of the Band. I like how they got their Band name from former frontman John Spence who would say "No Doubt" on a regular basis.
I'll say it again, Gwen was an adorable lil' dork. My heart still skips a beat every time I see her and the band. I am so fond of those memories. A truly magical time for music, I hope to see another time much like it. Im so happy I went to so many COUNTLESS shows and saw so many countless bands that shaped my youth in so many backyards and clubs. 😊
@Brian taylor He spat off an insult. She didn't. And sorry but Gwen has had work done. Most celebrities at her age has. Nothing wrong with that either, it's just a fact
@Brian taylor Another ignorant person on youtube. If I was jealous of Gwen, I wouldn't say how beautiful I think she is through all these years. People get cosmetic work. Big friggin deal. People who want to keep a youthful look tend to do that. Hers is tastefully done.
Eric (red tshirt) didn't say that he created the band and he is the writer .. he was so humble, after he left the band eric worked as animator for the Simpsons and other famous shows and channels like Nickelodeon..
Holy Moly Gwen was and is so so cute and adorable. She has it all. Looks, voice and personality. I think this is the closest to her natural hair I've ever seen too. Great video.
Back when they were just a local band. I grew up in the 714 area too, a suburb of L.A. next to Anaheim called La Mirada, and I had older friends who used to go No Doubt shows when they’d play at swap meets and local gigs. Ugh my teen years in the 90’s, miss ‘em. I was 11 in 92 though, this was before they hit it big around 95-96.
This is cool Was talking to my wife about this band. We saw them on our first unofficial date on her 22nd birthday at CSU Fullerton in 1992. Who knew they'd be huge.
Fullerton isn’t the peak of academia … this band got big because they hit a gold mine with Don’t Speak in the 90’s. That whole area is still a dead zone of progression.
@@brooklyn3299 That is an odd comment. It is one of the top universities in the country. I don't really care, as I graduated 30 years ago, but still it is an odd comment.

It was so different then. This was back when MTV played music most of the day and I remember working as a housekeeper at a hotel as a teen and we were allowed to listen to music in the rooms we cleaned while we did our work and I always put it on MTV. No Doubt played a lot when I worked and Nirvana. Back when people still had cassettes and CD's and if you wanted to record a song you recorded it off the radio with a blank cassette or CD. Now people can stream and MTV is mostly shows, so lame. They need to bring the old MTV back with more music.
It was an incredible time to be alive.. I was 11 when this interview was recorded.. I was more into hip hop back then.. I would get pissed when MTV played Nirvana and No Doubt videos.. Then I joined the school band and learned how to play saxophones, which eventually led to me picking up a guitar and learning how to shred.. By the time I got to high school my musical taste had done a complete 180 and I was into the alternative scene.. The 90's were hands down the greatest decade of all time.. We had just enough technology to make our lives easier, but not enough technology to make everyone fat and lazy..
