Do you know anyone who lived through the Clydebank Blitz?
In March 1941, German bombers unleashed hell on Clydebank and the surrounding areas. They rained fire and death for two nights, killing over 500 people in one of the darkest periods of Scotland’s history.
The full extent of the Clydebank Blitz was largely ignored by the British media and government at the time, with meagre reports of some bombs being dropped on a town in the west of Scotland. Even today, many people are unaware of the tragedy that befell Clydebank and its people.
We should not forget the hardships and struggles our community has endured in the past, as they can inspire us to face the challenges of an uncertain future with courage and hope.

A well produced video, with the presenter not dominating the production, and a commentary that complimented an array of truly relevant pictures that were very focused on the story. Many could learn from such a presentation. Now living in Australia and whose mother was from Blantyre. I’m English but an Australian citizen.

I knew nothing of this blitz before my visit to Clydebank. The video tells the story movingly. I was told, in the town, that an exhibition on the Blitz is currently in preparation and i think this video would be a useful contribution ....perhaps in publicity for it. I hope you are in touch with the organizers

In the late sixties and early seventies, when they were doing their regular dynamiting at the Dumbuck quarry, Nana Hendry would run around her little Dumbarton flat screaming "THE GERMANS ARE COMING THE GERMANS ARE COMING!" We, as kids, thought this was absolutely hilarious. No one had then heard of PTSD. Some bombs intended for Clydebank fell on Dumbarton, including one that hit a tenement in the New Town ("Newton") area, just one street away from where the family lived. A woman in the tenement who hadn't gone to a shelter died, only being identified when they found her finger with the wedding ring still on it.

Luckily, today I found your channel. We have been searching for a picture of the cafe that is next door to the cinema for years. It was owned by my wife’s grandparents and her mother and aunt used to work in it. This is the only pic we have ever seen. They too lost everything in the blitz. If you don’t mind telling me, I would love to know where I can get a copy of it. Looking forward to watching more or your videos. Charlie.

Hi Charlie, thanks for the comment and the support. Sorry for taking a while to get back to you. You should be able to download the picture here, and also find more images of the Blitz if you are interested - adlib.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/Details/collect/53260
