Not sure if anyone has said this, but the part where you are showing the ether injection is actually the air filter restriction gauge... Basically Tells you how dirty the air filter is
Sir, I would be proud to own a vehicle like that! As you stated, for all intense purposes, you have a brand new vehicle. Approx. 50 miles on a rebuilt engine, with hours so low its unreal. I drove tractor-trailer cross country for a little over 30 years and you my friend got a steal! The only advise I could possibly give is keep up on the maintenance, and "Don't forget to drain your air tanks!!!" Even if it has a air dryer and self bleeding valves, its still good to drain the moisture out at least twice to three times a week and even more in cold weather. Last thing you want is frozen airlines when there's two to four foot of snow on the ground. The other thing is checking to see if its equipped with a engine plug in for cold weather. If not you might want to see about getting a heat lamp/ oil pan heater pad. It's just a suggestion. I hope you have fun and many, many years of service from it!
That front toolbox under the R/H door was originally designed to be an outdoor mounted battery box. Relocate the batteries there and you can repurpose the passenger side bench seat for inboard storage or replace it with an air ride / suspension type seat.
My 1985 M 9231A1 takes 6 gallons of motor oil and the oil filter is about $35.00, not to bad. I have put about 3000 miles on it in the past year and done a few service repairs and upgrades. Its a blast. Good luck from Texas.
I drove trucks for a living for 30 years in the U.K. I watched this video and I am sorry but I am green with envy that you have this great vehicle. Truly awesome. The spec is so high and everything is solid because it is a military vehicle and things are made not to break. Cummins engine, probably the best, their quality control of components is really high. If the speedo is original the odometer reads 17211 miles which means the truck is almost in new condition as far as wear and tear is concerned. Definately the ultimate "bug out" vehicle. Good luck with it and enjoy.
@@danieltrobaugh8600 Lol,you need to do some research on your trucks. The M939 5 Ton Trucks all had a Cummins. The first Variants of them before having the large 1200×20 CTIS Tires had a NHC-250 Cummins when AM General manufactured them. When BMY Harsco made Contract to produce them without AMG,they had the 6CTA Cummins. The NHC-250 Cummins was also used in the M809 5 Ton Trucks by AM General.
Military Trucks alike Firetrucks have low Hours and Miles. The Military often rebuilds their trucks when they hit 730 Hours of use. The highest amount of Miles I've seen Military Rigs go up to is 55K.Most of the time, you'll find them with over 20K,and some even only go up to 7K.They don't see much use like other industrial trucks, espiecally ones on the road, which explains why the Mileage is extremely low.
OR another possibility: the former owner kept on unwinching when the cable was on its end and by this winched the opposit direction.... might be possible you think?
gee man, hard telling. My wish list is pretty long... But I am in scale down mode. I have to get rid of a lot of stuff that I know is just weighing me down and not getting any use. need anything?
In the '90's I believe, it became Reg to wear a helmet "Every time you're moving. You end up banging your head and helmet into everything all the time. Got to be rugged.
I guess you had never been around big trucks so thats why you are amazed by all of this. Its cool you are enjoying this and thanks for the video. Enjoy your new toy.
Reverse + Low transfer = transfer case bits scattered all over the place. Pretty sure it was a design flaw that they just didn't feel like fixing since reverse gear in Hi transfer is very powerful and slow as it is.
Very nice. I had 5 Ton license, in the Army National Nuard. Never did more than ferry it around the lot. If you got the operator manual, it has a ton of maintenance checks and services, (PMCS). Looks like that vehicle was maintained very well. We had 2 in our outfit. One carried a massive 65 KW Generator and towed another trailer mounted unit. The second was assigned to the Mess Section. Trucks in my section were M35A1 or A2s. With commmo shelters.
Thanks for the informative walk around, start-up, and brief drive. Either injection, from days of owning '68 Ford F100 (300ci, straight-6, 3-on-the-tree), by the time I purchased was 12yo with 80k. Anytime it was below 20F needed a couple squirts of starting fluid. Can not imagine why carb required rebuilding and the wear on engine from flash start.
I would definitely keep this truck. You made a smart choice buying it, and it will be a very important valuable asset to you when you will need it because you can definitely go places that other vehicles can’t, and as for a smaller vehicle if I had to choose would definitely be Toyota pick up trucksbetween Toyota and these army trucks, they are quality that you don’t get in Ford Chevy Dodge
Hey Josh. You might be able to get a Tech Manual 'T.M. for the jewel maybe from someone that is still in the service. They have a T.M. Library for every piece they have. Glad you have straight air brakes instead of air over hydraulic like they used to to. Swap the lines on the winch and the spool valve will be right as far as the decal goes. A little ether won't hurt but none is better. Allisons are bulletproof. Good truck!Drive that baby!As for the air popping off, your unloader governor might be adjusted or have to be replaced. Try adjusting first.
The aft of the two toolboxes was for the canvas cargo cover. The forward of the two is actually a battery relocation kit. These are great trucks. I myself may be acquiring an M923 in the very near future.
Your truck is actually a M925A2.The M925 is a M923 with just a PTO Winch. But on the Papers and Tags,it will normally say W/0 for "Without Winch" and W/W for "With Winch",because of the common factor that some of the M923's get Winches aftermarket, and some Winches even get taken off of the M925's.
You should take that rig on Trooper Tyree's October 2022 Great Smoky Mountains Convoy. See HISTORY in MOTION magazine 'Events' listing of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association.
What a BEAST!! You got to much money Brother. LOL. Whats the Neighbors think? My Neighbors look at me funny from all the cars. I should bring one of them home for them to talk about. Looks like a lot of fun. Cool toy Josh. You should take that thing off road, and film it in action. Later Bro.
+Mikes Homestead haha thanks Mike! I don't have too much money, just selling off some other junk first :) It is a blast bud, and i'll be filming it in action soon :) Hope you guys are getting ready for winter out in Wisconsin! Be in touch man!
This is anything but the ultimate prepper vehicle, yes it’s big and can go almost anywhere but that’s also a negative. You will stand out both in size and noise and be the target of everyone.
Man that thing is a freaking beast! My buggout vehicle is my 95 7.3 that gets 18-25mpg. Extended bed extended cab. But that thing is on my list tho. I want tog eat one of those things in the future. Mpg?
I would love to preserve an identical truck to this one. I love the sound and I like the styling as well. All the best from Northern Ireland and a Trump supporter too.
okay, I had a sexual moment!!!! Ya know what gave me a real chuckle?!??! The pretty wood grain trim around the gear selector!! LOL!! I think you'll need some modifications before you an rename this....the WALLY WAGON!! VERY nice grab brother!!
Have you read anything about the problems with the automatic transmissions in the 5 tons? If you need any help or have questions visit the Steel Soldiers Forum.
One thing I've read is that you CANNOT just change fluids. The military used motor oil (I think 15W40?) in the trans, but if you switch to ATF you MUST flush it fully.
Make sure that mounting bracket on your spare is secure...many many times personnel overlook this matter. I drove once,,and the it rolled in the middle of a busy intersection....get the etch manual (tm). Parts are easy to find on ebay...steel soldiers is an excellent forum.
Back in the day I was in a Bedford truck and that ringing noise would not stop! It was so annoying. The Park Brake was off too but the thing would not stop ringing, for the whole 500 mile journey! Arrrgh!
the sqeak might be the belt tensioner shoot a little wd40 or oil in the spring. the parts for the 8.3 Cummins are cheapest at a case ih farm equipment dealer. don't worry youl never wear out that engine. the abs brakes were added in later years to prevent brake lock up when its lightly loaded. they were to aggressive.
funny you should mention that, because when I was fixing the Winch, alone, it became a pain in the butt getting in and out of the cab to go look at the truck to see if it was turning kama so I rigged up a GoPro and was able to monitor it on my phone. But I think it would be ideal to permanently mount a backup camera that is switch activated. also I'd really like to put LED flood lights all over the thing so that I can make daylight anytime of night.
By the way...there is a truck dealer in my state that deals in surplus military trucks like this and they want $25-30K for ones in the same condition as yours. Sounds like you got a steal on yours if you got it for scrap steel price. After you play for a while, you might just consider selling to offset some of your cabin building costs.
correction its an m925, tho only difference is the winch, I feel that the winch is added later because the winches on these trucks were PTO driven but its not uncommon for people to reroute the PTO on a hydraulic pump
literally the only difference is if it has a winch or not, like i said i think the winch and the hydraulic pump are after market, or alot of times the marines add alot of that kind of stuff but the stock m923 from the army had the pto shaft go to the winch, as in there was no hydraulics, the winch was pto driven 20,000 lb winch
the tensioner get dry and squeak they changed the design it helped it will drive you insane if you don't like the sound of it. have a couple freight liner trucks with that engine in it I just ignore it I know what it is. the new replacement one is better
Cool ride :-) Since we have to go through another private property to get to ours, we would have an issue with the vehicle weight driving on this road. Otherwise this is something that would be awesome for us. Happy for you. :-) It looks like it is in awesome shape... And yes...I would have no problems driving it on our road, except for when it is muddy up the hills :-)
What a beast, Can't wait to see more vids of this in action!! I really don't want to be one of those types of people who tell you what you should do to your truck..........buuuuut that thing you said about not having a dump body on it. That would make a SICK dump!!!! Anyway that's my 2 cents, GREAT TRUCK!
I agree Kevin, it would be an awesome dump. The problem is, you lose a lot of the off-road capability when you hinge that body and don't answer it to the frame of the way that it currently is. It's going to be an unfortunate trade-off
drove the hell out of those and the Deuce and a half as well.. the fuel tank is actually closer to 85 gal when empty.. The soft tops are crap but that's because they are designed to drop in a 50cal mount ring for a M-2 50cal. The slang is just to call them a 5 ton. Did the remove out the oil air cleaner.. if so it is to make it street legal but they can be changed back if you don't tell no one. they will climb grades like you can't even imagine and drive down them like a bat out of hell..As an MP I have seen them knock down small trees to get the shit out of dodge when taking fire... as for fording water I have seen guys drive them with half of the steering wheel under water in the cab.....
that's hysterical! I can picture that actually. What's funny, she has parked her car in front of it a couple of times, and the six by six can literally drive right over it. probably wouldn't even scratch the bumper on the 6 by 6 :-)
Bugout vehicle? Nothing like a very big, slow and loud target. Better paint it pink just to complete the package. Oh and good luck keeping up with fuel and repairs. Life expectancy, maybe a day. Nice truck though. USMC vet 79 to 85. We got these in 1984.
Every truck over 3.5 metric tons capacity in Europe has a 24 Volt electrical system. Only in US and Canada heavy diesel trucks are still built with a 12 Volt electrical.
Those trucks are pretty bad ass. I would rather go for a M35A2 or a M54A2. Both have the multifuel engines which, imo, if there is some sort of apocalypse, nobody is gonna be stopping at their local fuel stations and fill up. While one could siphon the fuel, I guarantee others will also have the same idea and may become violent over that resource.
Could the problem of the winch lever being backwards be from having the cable wound the wrong direction on the winch drum? Or maybe the hydraulic couplings to the winch motor are backwards?
The Multi-Fuel is a shit brick and a turd. There's a good reason why they instantly got rid of them with Mack Engines in the M39 5 Ton Trucks. Those Multi-Fuels were underpowered and short lasting Engines. They got worse MPG in a 5 Ton than a Deuce. The LDS-465 made 175 HP and 445 Torque, while the LDT-465 made 135 HP and 330 Torque. The Multi-Fuels barley could get over 60K on Mileage without getting high end Maintenance or a Engine Rebuild. The only thing neat about those Engines is the factor of them having different Pistons,Pumps, and Fuel Injectors that allows them to consume Gasoline,Petrol, and Ethanol mixed with Diesel Fuel or Oil,and it can't be 50/50,it has to be 30/70.Those Multi-Fuels are still Ignition Compression Engines and need to be treated like Diesel Engines, they will not use straight Gasoline without damaging themselves. The 465 made 9-10 MPG in the Deuce & A Half while 2-3 MPG is what the 5 Tons got.To boil it down, the other Engines used in the 5 Ton Trucks will outlast a Multi-Fuel and make much more power.
each cell in the 6 cell battery's make 2 volts, each battery makes 12 volts, 2 battery's are wired in sires making 24 volts each bank of 2 battery's are wired in parallel doubling cold cranking amps if each 12 volt battery was 600 cold cranking amps, 2 linked in series would have 1200 amps and 24 volts, the other 2 12 volt battery's linked in series makes 24 volts with 1200 amps 2, 24 volt pairs of battery's linked parallel makes 24 volts at 2400 amps. low volts, BIG amps If the battery's are in good shape and the starter motor is tight you could drive the truck a short distance on the starter and battery's with the manual transmission . You can run the wench PTO with the starter motor in a pinch with the Allison automatic trans with a bit of know how, some safety elimination trickery and compressed air. If you relive engine compression and disable the compressor, you would be surprised how far it will go on just the starter if you don't over heat the starter plus it's pretty quiet. That machine is made to get you out of most situations under any condition even when the engine won't run.
Did you ever on a junk yard go over and against cars to understand the limits against road blocks? It goes steady, but not fast and can push with hits weight, grip and power a real heavy load aside. It might get stuck if a car gets between the first two access in a funny angle, but not for long. They are break through vehicles, but you might want to upgrade the screen and top with bullet proof acryl glass and ballistic canvas. #provos #3%
Awesome truck. Just wondering if you still have it, how its been treating you and have you had any problems with it. How hard is it to get parts for the truck when needed?
Nice buy and I don't think you have much of an idea of how much potential that 8.3 Cummings has if you look to find it. It can make 22,500 pounds move around in a pretty big hurry. I got about the same acceleration pulling over 50,000 pounds with an 8.3. It's there if you chose to find it. BTW it still sipped fuel considering the work it did.
I highly doubt that you moved even over 30,000 lbs with a 5 Ton Truck. That is just impossible.Even a older M939 5 Ton or M809 5 Ton with a NHC-250 Cummins can't handle that, being both are 240 HP stock. My 1980 M915A0 with a NTC-400 is rated for 53,000 lbs at 57 MPH,while it was Governed. So I highly doubt that a 5 Ton could pull that off, literally.Even if the truck you used was a Semi Tractor, that won't be done without several Aftermarket Modifications.
Welcome to the wonderful world of big trucks. I do have a couple of questions though, reg wise how does that work and did you have to bump the license up to a cdl a because of vehical weight and air brakes. Let me close by saying Way to Cool. Have fun.
Josh it looks like you are not used to driving trucks. You said the gap between 1st and second gear ratios was quite big. Yes well 1st gear is what we call 'crawler gear" not used when driving on the road in normal conditions. Take off in 2nd or 3rd. With the whopping big 8 liter engine, no problem.
They do,but only if it was owned by the Navy Seabees or Marine Corps. In the Navy and USMC,they have Lockers on their trucks. And they become hard to come by,since they get used on a high scale and get put through soo much, espiecally with wet grounds, that they can rust out badly.
That truck is awesome! Without trying to get too personal, where in the country are you? I ask because of the beautiful orange and red leaves on the trees seen in your walkaround video when you took the truck for a short drive... man what beautiful country! We don't get that here in Texas... at least not where I live north of Houston... we have lots of pines here... thanks for posting about this amazing vehicle. :D
they were not designed with a ABS system.. That is put on to make it street legal.. In military mode they do not have abs. They hardest part to learn to use in a hurry is to the headlight switches...when I drove them they were a manual 5 speed double.. oh yeah the air supply for the wipers never work.
Well thanks for commenting. It sounds like you really have some experience with this thing. You're right about the headlight switch in a hurry. Not a very intuitive design. I've also heard that the ABS was added because the brakes would lock up but the drivetrain would keep pushing causing the truck to drift, which would cause it to flip when loaded. I guess a lot of people died in that truck before they decided to add ABS. The all air system seems pretty cool, and believe it or not the wipers on my truck work great, but I can see how they would be the first to fail.
The main reason why the Brakes could lock up is if it is sitting and parked for a very long time, and they you would also have to check your Axle Boots. The same issue has happened with the Deuce & A Half before to.And the M939 5 Tons all have MT654CR Automatics. The previous 5 Ton Trucks like the M809's and M39's are all Single Shift witb a 3053 Spicer Transmission.
I know I have an m35a2 with no winch and I get it stuck a lot manly because I just go where I shouldn't but thankfully I have friends I go out with who do have the winches lol
