That person is a disgrace to humanity. The doctors and nurses who were assigned to Maya’s care are a disgrace as well. They have to be fired and never allowed to work in the medical industry again.
I think everyone is forgetting that the reason the docs call CPS because the “cure” for CRPS is 100 mg of ketamine every hour. If you are a doc and your patient’s parents demanded that when your patient is experiencing the symptoms of withdrawal, wouldn’t you be suspicious?
It was scene when Maya was doing her last interview and she was crying and said "I hate crying" and then her moms voice recording played of her saying, "It's okay to cry, its normal. You have to speak for yourself because mommy's not there. Just close your eyes and pretend im there". That got me balling boohoo real tears🥺
I have CRPS. I can't imagine having this pain as a child. I can barely deal with it as an adult. Pain patients are extremely abused by the medical companies and the government. We are looked at like we are addicts and told we are making everything up. I pray Maya's family gets justice. I pray "normal" ppl start to stand up for those of us that are silenced. It's not just adults, children (as this documentary showed) are victimized and it needs to stop.
I wish that this will lead to a trial by jury, the doctors responsible should have their medical licenses suspended, the social worker should be in jail and the laws should be revised with many fail safes in place, still can't belief thay such shit could happen in real life 😢
I just watched this and it is heartbreaking to say the least. I strongly suspect that the verdict will be in favour of the Kowalskys. It MUST be. The f*ck*ng state and the hospital have no case. I also wish that the doctors and nurses who were assigned to Maya’s care during the three months she was kidnapped and incarcerated in the hospital be brought forward and punished, alongside the social worker of course.

Maya thrived for a year after treatment in Monterrey, Mexico. The US authorities didn't include that at all. Why not? Bias? I wish the doctor in Monterrey would speak out and prove the lackings in the US med system.
Mayas condition suddenly deteriorated because of a hurricane, that tells me it's psychological. More importantly, Maya suddenly was able to walk and did better when away from her mother. What does that tell you? Her mother cared more about the controle she had or didn't have over her than her actual condition.
@@adish7275 As a parent to a child who lives with CRPS, I feel the need to help educate others in understanding that it is not "psychological" for a person with a pain disease to experience an increase in symptoms with massive (and even minor) weather pattern changes due to changes in barometric pressure. A hurricane certainly can exacerbate symptom presentation. This information is readily available in many reputable sources. In addition, as Maya points out in the documentary, CRPS symptom presentation can flux day to day, even hour to hour, at times, therefore there are times where one's capabilities appear different than 2 hours later, or 2 days later. In addition, someone who lives with this type of diagnosis learns to function despite the pain, and often can appear to not be in pain to outsiders, when in reality they are in high pain, but have to push through in order to participate in life - I see this every day with my child with CRPS. I am not here to slam you, rather to encourage you to take a deeper dive into CRPS and other pain/neurological diseases so you can make informed commentary. Commentary like this only further perpetuates the exact problematic and inaccurate thinking this documentary is challenging!

Just because you have zero knowledge about it, doesn’t make it psychological. This mom was trying to help her kid, so she has every single right to control the situation.
When you have establishments who's never held accountable for their actions this is the result. It is a terribly tragic story, and my heart aches for the family. There is a lot of gray area here, though. For example, any parent (as long as they are not overtly abusive) can take their child out of a hospital or ER at any time as long as they sign the "leaving against medical advice" paper. Why they didn't do that initially, I do not understand. Perhaps they were misinformed. Also, a parent, even if she is a doctor or a nurse, cannot dictate the treatment plan for the patient. The ketamine protocol Beata wanted was not FDA approved and can be life threatening. Clearly, the parents, doctors, and nurses wanted to help this poor young girl, but in my opinion, the should have had her transferred to the care of the doctors who had been treating her prior to her ER visit. Doctors take an oath to do no harm.
AMA is supposed to be the option. In practice, especially in the Southern U.S., it is not allowed. Parents are physically restrained by hospital security guards who don't care about civil rights. These hospitals often have a courtroom on the grounds. And the judge ALWAYS rules in the doctors favor. Parents have NO rights in these situations. And CPS (Children Protective Services) is staffed by non-medical personnel who rubber stamp whatever the non-specialist doctor says. And I, for one, have encountered the most egotistical anal orifices in emergency rooms. And as retired federal law enforcement I've dealt with all these dirt bags. Lastly, Florida and Texas are THE WORST for this excrement.

watched last night and came looking for moral support! 😫 really difficult to watch. it wasn't just the idea that the hospital could just take control of your family so easily, it's the idea that they could do so and make the process utterly miserable simply because they did not like the mom's assertiveness. it was apparent that they were punishing her. horrifying to think petty people could have so much power backing them.

I spent hours crying, what a pain, what a horrible pain this family went through. Not romanticizing suicide but Beata thought about sacrificing her life for her daughter to be treated, it's still very sad to know that it's not an isolated case, those statements at the end broke me.
I have the same feeling because it was the only way in which the judge paid attention and did not pay any kind of remorse to his decision, perhaps if the Beata thing had not happened, perhaps Maya would not have returned to her family yet. I hope they can get justice and that the guilty go to jail because they destroyed a family.

I cried so hard after finding out the mother committed suicide. I have a daughter myself so this really hurt me to the core. All she wanted was her baby to not be in pain and to come home. These people tormented her for being a concerned mother. They saw how deeply this mother loved her child and still didn’t care. They blamed the mother when all she wanted was her daughter to be okay. Just comes to show how cruel and heartless people truly are.
I wish she didn't kill herself. The cries of the son and dad when the brother saw her in the garage. And the part Maya was crying at the funeral in her wheelchair. May God punish all those involved who had the audacity to to even mock her at death saying the mental mom killed herself.
Never heard of this story until I stumbled across it tonight on Netflix. I’m a sucker for good documentaries but this has gotta be the most saddest and most gut wrenching ones I’ve ever seen and has unlocked a fear I have as a parent that I never knew existed.

good point! many researches show how girl/women's pain is underrated/not being properly taken care of ("histeria" right?) and it's supposed to be XXI century.. It could have been mentioned in this doc, otherwise great, heartbreaking and so important.
This hits home. My wife has crps. We have three kids. Two of which have autism. I'm the only bread winner. I have to work and my wife is not only a warrior, but a veteran and gets no help at all. I try my hardest. My heart goes out to everyone that is or has gone through this or anything like it. It's like a demon that can't be seen.
I too have CRPS, RSD, type 1. There care other treatments available including implantable morphine pump which has been used for years and proven to be effective. I would hesitate to use such High dosage and a coma induced by ketamine for a child. Remember this is experimental and not approved in the US.
This is so horrifying. Those drs at the hospital and nurses and child protective services and the judge are plain evil, they committed an absolute crime against that family.

How can this sort of thing be hidden from the judge or did the judge know? Her lawyers should have asked the insurance company what the hospital was billing them for and they could have presented that in court to prove she wasn’t making it up and her dr diagnosed it and the hospital did too. It’s all about an evil system that wants to destroy families, that’s the only thing I can come up with because it doesn’t make any logical sense.
Look at social worker! She needs mental help herself! But I think the most fault here is a judge. They are so taking for granted situation. They supposed to be fair and protect honest people, but he probably had more important things to do like golfing. All I have to say. Money! Money always more important that people’s life. There is so many of these cases out there!! If you think this documentary was long and took a lot out of you try being involved in them. You should check out the case in Idaho with baby Cyrus, the hospital is actually trying to sue the family and the people who helped....smh. I do the best I can to help out where I can when I can to help reunite wrongfully separated families and kind of have a network now but it's a lot of work! As a former foster child, foster parent and now Family Advocate/activist, I've seen a lot .....this movie still got to me!!!.

I couldn't live with the guilt.
I'm convinced they feel like they did nothing wrong, like they wrote in the texts, they are obligated to report abuse, which they understoodwas happening, beata was giving her daughter 1000 ml of Katamine a day and she wouldn't stop, that IS INSAINLY DANGEROUS. Those were also private texts.

This really happens. Like the movie, I did what mom did but lived resulting from what DPSS put me through. I went through something like this in 1983. When the government gets their teeth in a case. They play judge and jury. They destroy lives. When the government loses the case, they should compensate families. There needs to be a law that the government compensates families for their loss.
This documentary pissed me off, but needed to be told. I was born with a disability (spina bifida for people in the medical field), and am 48 years old. Medical professionals want to argue with me on how to care for myself ALL. THE. TIME. No one has ever tried to keep me from my parents, though.

I was diagnosed in March of this year. This movie helped me so much. It confirmed just how much Doctors are completely out of touch. I was fortunate that a good friend of mine is a neurosurgeon who when my husband texted him with my symptoms, he knew exactly what I had.
I've seen this documentary. It is indescribable how horrific the family went through. Up until now, I'm still thinking about Maya. May God protect and strengthen the Kowalski family

I was a heroin, fentanyl and crack addicted escort for years. In April of 2019, I was arrested at my hotel. I went to jail that night and the intake nurse told me I was pregnant. I've been sober for 4 years now and have a beautiful son BUT it is one of my biggest fears that someone might one day have a problem with me for some reason and call CPS just to make problems. It's my fear that even if I were to ever smoke pot I would get in trouble and have my son taken if someone called. I never do anything that could get my son taken from me but because people and CPS are so evil and vindictive... it's a (possibly) irrational fear of mine. I think any good mom that has seen cases from CPS is worried to even take their kid to the ER for a broken arm! They are so beyond corrupt !!!

I’m only halfway through your video and you are very biased in the way the documentary wanted you to be! Saying the few videos from doctors offices imply this story being told from both sides is just wrong. It is very obviously only the side of the family. Don’t get me wrong, I have extreme empathy and sympathy for this family. Florida has privatized CPS but it is NOT for profit as you said. It’s still paid by the government, and they have neither the resources or the desire to take kids from their parents! But we get nothing from the other side of the story due to the lawsuit and HIPAA laws. Their hands were tied in responding to this. If you look up public documents from the trial so far, there is ALOT to suggest MPB in the mother and/or medical child abuse. It’s easy to be extremely manipulated by this documentary if it’s the only thing you know about this case. As upset I was and even bringing me to tears a few times, I knew something wasn’t adding up so I went deeper into reading about this case as the one-sided nature of presenting this story is harmful to the CPS system as a whole. So I was invested as all of us want the children protected from any kind of abuse. Writing off Beata’s obvious MPB because she had one two hour session with a doctor who said she didn’t have it? MBP parents live in a constant state of manipulating people, of course she could get by one therapist. The parents love Maya, obviously on some level thought they were doing what was best for her. No they didn’t make up the illness but they brought that gjrl into the ER with 20 medications in her small body and insanely high and sometimes lethal doses of Ketamine were what the mom wanted the doctors to give her. The very unsafe coma in Mexico happens just 2 months after Mayas diagnosis, so many safer things they should have tried first. SO MUCH most people missed in this emotionally manipulative, one sided story, in order to come away with the opinions most people have.
I have watched both the documentary and the entire trial, I hope Maya and her family get triple what they are asking for! Power and money were the only things this hospital and some ego driven affiliates of the hospital were interested in, period! They discounted or ignored anything that opposed their agenda, except when it came to billing and charging a 10 year old they abducted and forced to stay in the hospital for over 3 months hundreds of thousands of dollars for a hospital stay she NEVER wanted! 2 sides of the story does not take away from the horrors this hospital, some staff and those with an agenda put this family through
I want those heartless bastards responsible for all this hearbreak, the hospitals, the attorneys, social workers, judges, anyone involved in this abhorrent locked away. They took a life and likely several others, nobody should get away with murder.

I have yet to watch this but I saw it pop up in my feed on Netflix. My grandfather (passed Dec'21) who had been estranged to my fmaily was abused by his so called caretaker and during this time frame began financial and outright abuse (non feeding, refusal to take to ER, etc). Numerous calls were made to APS (adult protective services) here in CA (around 9) in a 3 month time frame before we were made aware and every investigation by them were dismissive and found not credible. By the time we were able to go thru the courts to get a conservatorship enacted, his assets and estate had been moved and even worse when he was able to finally be admitted for care he had lost 40lbs and had a broken femur and dislocated hip from the negligence and abuse at the hands of these people. There were so many warning signs and evidence that no one bothered to raise enough of an alarm or do a proper investigation that in my opinion the quality of his life was cut extremely less to where he passed away unable to maintain a level of dignity we all should have when we leave this place. Don't ever let a bureaucrat or someone in a position of authority get in your way to make sure the care of your loved one is handled diligently and expertly.
these ppl have no sense of remorse, no consequences for their behaviour.... If there's no justice, there is no fear... There should be an organisation of anonymous people giving appropriate justice, when the system fails. And the system almost always fails. Ppl should be able to have some support battling those monsters.
I have CRPS/RSD and the system does not know how to deal with us most times the ER is the last place someone that has CRPS/RSD wants to wind up because it is just so rare and most Drs will never see a case in their lifetimes, so they do not recognize it nor do they know how to treat it so they wind up doing more damage instead of helping.
It is very understandable why hospital has to come to that conclusion. As tricky as her disease CRPS is, their parents visited the girl holding holy water, a cross, wafers, rosary, demanded ketamine, a recreational drug. Her disease was a psychology condition, a discomfort caused by physical touch, and it is understandable to assume what crazy things religious people can do. So, the hospital suspected possible child abuse and reported it, the responsible officials could have investigated and made the right decision. Her mother has even inflicted physical injuries on herself before taking her own life. Everything was so messed up. Sometimes it is better to not be protective of someone who does not want to be protected.
"When you hear hoofbeats think horse, not zebra.". This is a saying used in medicine about jumping to less likely conclusions. Munchausen by proxy diagnosis destroys families and brings horrendous damage and death. When you you contemplating it, consider that it is almost always wrong. My psychiatrist did several sessions with a Mom, who was a nurse, after having her daughter was taken away because another nurse "heard hoofbeats" and called it a zebra. After my doctor the expert concluded there was no Munchausen's, mother and daughter were reunited.
Watching this was hard. I didn't know about the story before Netflix but I could see where it was going. The moms pain in the recording. I honestly don't understand the system in America. I also feel there was alot of biases based on the mom having a thick accent and not being American they were trying so hard to make her the bad guy. Eastern Europeans are just very direct and don't hold back and i believe this offended some staff at the hospital. This was really sad and you can tell Beata was a great mom. But she knew they were never gonna let her kid come home to her
Not saying all drs are bad, just saying like in all professions, in this case it only took a few drs, nurses and staff to show how uncaring and ego driven they were, exposing the entire hospital as corrupt and money driven!
I have been a pediatric nurse for 16 years in Philippines and in Qatar and have seen rare children medical conditions but before the doctors would conclude anything they would go through the medical history, extensive laboratories and examinations. While watching Maya's documentary my jaw drops because they have done nothing in the ER, they didn't even sit with the parents to discuss Maya's medical history and for 10 minutes of talking to Maya's parents they immediately concluded that Maya was a case of child abuse which I find odd and disturbing. The doctor who saw Maya at the ER could have contacted Maya's medical team who looks after her and who have diagnosed her. We do have what we could case conference where the primary doctor and the other doctors who are involved in the care and other Healthcare workers and the family would sit together and discuss the child conditions which never did happened here in Maya's case.
Have not seen this, doesn't even show up on my Netflix home page, had to search to find it, but this is such a solid review that there's no doubt I'll be watching it.
This was just appalling and heartbreaking. I was outraged that Miss Smith never had to admit she was wrong or went to jail. I pray for peace for all the victims of this.😢

I have lived this. I almost lost my daughter and I never even got as far as this family did. My child is still suffering due to being court ordered not to get my daughter help. I never felt so validated that the system is as corrupt as it is. I’m a single mom. Our story will be coming soon. Maya and her family are in my nightly prayers.

1:16 this is a good explanation. I struggled with this, among other chronic conditions, and at my worst nobody could touch me. I couldn't even use blankets because it caused horrible pain. the pain from simply laying in bed/on a pillow was also very odd, I had pain in my feet like I was doing some crazy high impact thing from resting my foot on a pillow! I also got super swollen and red because of it
This is just a thought….in regards to CPS. Think how much easier/more convenient/safer/less risky/less work/less thinking/less activity it is to go to the hospital and follow up on a possible “problem “ versus going into these violent homes and DOING THE RIGHT THING. We’ve seen over and over the avoidance and mistreatment of cases where severe child abuse is going on. So for this CPS worker there are no risks, untidy filthy environments, possible violent interactions when these kids are hospitalized….and it’s been reported by staff. Apparently the doctors, judge and social workers consider it an open and shut case. I haven’t seen the documentary so I dare not speak too loudly on this, but nurse’s really don’t make those kind of decisions(prior nurse). I could see them getting blamed though!!! Also it’s very difficult to find a doctor liable and very few doctors will “OUT” a bad doctor. It must be drilled into them during their TRAINING.
When my 2nd son was newborn he had broncial pneumonia was placed in ICU he is a mixed baby black and white he had Mongolian spots that looked like bruises all over his back and buttocks this was 1982 Thank God the Dr was aware of what they were but the nurses thought i was beating my newborn this was one horrible documentary i pray this family gets justice for all.
Maya and her brother were awarded a crap ton of money. No amount of money can cure Maya and bring her mother back. The lasting toll on their hearts will last a lifetime. I actually want the same benefits for all those other families too..to be compensated for their mis-treatment and I mostly want that Social Worker to go to prison for her dasterdemdly deeds. SHE needs Phycological help for sure. Good thing they have counseling in prison where they will find her wicked/very sick for sure. As someone was has CRPS my heart breaks for this family and I understand wanting to take away that pain. I do know this about Ketamine infusions, a pain specialist here in the US wanted to give me that very same treatment. My primary who fully advocates for my CRPS care objected to that treatment for one specific reason, if there is one mistep in the dosage it's fatal. That is something Maya's mom should fully know as a nurse herself and that is a huge huge risk. That is most likely where the notion of MBP accusation came from so I do understand from the hospital's POV in getting Child services involved, you're literally risking your child's life or anyone's for that matter going with Ketamine treatment. I am disgusted with the notion that Maya is faking it and that her mother is said to have MBP. You do shift with symptoms day to day, hour to hour. CRPS has been coined as well the "Suicide disease" some take their own life over the pain.
I got rotator upfront bone spur out & 4 months of heavy rehabilitation..I can't raise my arm& fingers disfigured..hurts so bad...Don't sign off on getting roTorcuff surgery.or actually can get in certain part like a fracture you can get it...system fail...I'm on WY to pin clinic they want to do Stellate ganglion shots by Mt throat. Suppoes to also help with pstd..I'm mad..& scared
This movie is brilliant, but unfortunately, the "system" has too much power. The facade of those in authority that they care for the children, but in the process, it appears they intentionally destroy individuals, families, and their finances. Power hunger people in positions of authority. The abuse of heartless, money grapping systems that are ABUSING families and children. The journalist was so good, but unfortunately, the system is corrupt, and if the price is right, anyone can be bought.
they never called a social worker on us. but they did sick the police on us many, many times, threatening arrest- just because we couldn't get anyone to take us seriously, or even examine me!!! they assumed at 90% of ER visits that we were just after drugs.....it all makes it trauma, on top of already existing constant horrible trauma. i can't even watch the movie. it is just way too close to home. the trailer makes me cry.
Can't beliiiieeeve that a case like Gabriel Fernandez, was inveeeestigated by CPS on multiple occasions with several social workers and his parents STILL had custody of him, evem though he was tortured and in the end he was tortured to death by his parents, but theeese parents had their children taken and being thrown in jail in some cases for bringing their children to the hospital!
