Take Care of Your Car and It Will Take Care of YOU! Here's an Example of That.

This principle pretty much applies to all cars. Take care of your car and it will take care of you. Some of them will be better than others but in the end this simple principle can be applied to any car.
In this video we look at 2 similar models. one of them have had a long history of care and it shows at 300,000 miles. One of them have had a questionable history and even with the current owner's best care still had issues at an early age.
Folks maintenance is key at the early life of a car's life. And that early care and dedication will pay off in the later years of the car's ownership.
You don't have to be a mechanic to take care of your car well. Simply understand the car's maintenance and follow through with it. Taking care of a car doesn't have to cost you a small fortune.

Words of wisdom by the Care Care Nut. Like Scotty Kilmer says, oil & filters are cheap, engines are expensive. Change your oil & filter every six-months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first and you will be a happy camper. And, don't use crappy oil or filters to save a few bucks. I use high end German oil and OEM filters in both of our vehicles (Liqui Moly Special Tec) specifically for each vehicle, a Volvo and Lexus. 😎

@@jml9550you should not change trans fluids every 30k miles, you gonna damage your transmission, trans fluids needs to be change 50-90k miles, it’s all about lubricants in the transmission oil additives. Every 30k is recommended-to change trans filter.
@jml9550
@jml9550 Год назад
@@marcinnalepka1530 I disagree. We only drain about 25-30% of the fluid in the transmission pan. Majority of the fluid is still in the transmission itself and torque converter. By diluting 25-30% new fluid with the old, it adds lubricants to it. So far my wife’s 08 RX350 has 155K mikes and shift like butter, no clunkiness at all from park to reverse in our slope. We do replace the filter every 60K miles.

I had a 2002 Camry LE with 327,500 miles on it. We bought it new and had it for 14 years. The only problem we had was the catalytic converter had to be replaced and the exhaust manifold had a recall. Changed the oil, transmission fluid, coolant regularly. Did all required maintenance earlier than Toyota said they had to be done. At 325,000 the catalytic converter had to be replaced again and she was burning a quart of oil every 2500 to 3000 miles. My wife made me sell the car and get a new one, I’m sure I could of gotten at least another 50,000 miles out of her. I’m a big believer in my age care if your car and it will take care of you. Wish your shop was near where I live. Thank you for the great videos.

I bought it with no maintenance records so I went in blind with it, no idea of how many previous owners it has had. I can only assume it was well cared for by how it has been so far. So I drove across the country from NYC all the way to Denver, finished college, then moved to NorCal for awhile until I ultimately went back to NYC to settle all with the same car. I agree that maintenance records are important. However, what I do find confusing/unfair is that when you are buying a secondhand car the dealer will make a big deal of the maintenance records but when you are trading a car in on another vehicle the maintenance records don't seem to carry any value. Second-hand values in Australia are at an all-time high at the moment especially 4x4s. The Forerunner in the US is (I think) called a Hilux in Australia. The older models with the 3.0 diesel engine were particularly reliable models. The more recent 2.8 litre has problems with the Diesel particulate filters. Especially if they are confined to city driving. I also believe the oil change intervals recommended by Toyota are too long. I change my oil and filter every 5000 kilometres.

I had this happen with a Ford Explorer. I had always wanted a 2nd gen Explorer. I found a very clean one with working A/C and everything for less than $2000. I was the 3rd owner. It was cheap because it constantly ran lean. It was a 96 with the 4.0L OHV. It was actually very reliable over the 2 years I had it, but nobody could get it running right. The one thing that never got checked was the computer. Otherwise, we tried everything and couldn't get it running right. I traded it in for a 2012 Toyota Rav4. I've put a lot of miles on the Rav4 and I like it. It's been super reliable, but I miss I miss my Explorer. It broke my heart to have to get rid of it. I tried to save my Explorer but it was making me late for work all the time and I couldn't afford to keep trying to fix it with no guarantee. My Rav4 is similar in simplicity and reliability.

Since I’m retired I don’t drive as much, so gas mileage is not a big thing to me. Too bad the imagery from the borescope didn’t turn out well in the video. But we can see the scoring. I’m getting to be of the opinion, if I go to a mechanic and they do not have a borescope, then run away. Especially now, some very inexpensive ones can be had that provide excellent views… so there is no longer an excuse not to have one as a mechanic. Agreed, that 300k engine looks great. It looks even better than some domestic engines I have seen with only 40k. Great content as usual! You’re an ethical man and your customers are hopefully thankful for your excellent care and service!

Very true. But those kinds of miles in that condition is not possible where I live in the snow belt east of one of the Great Lakes. With 200+” of snow per year, cars are coated in thick salt even 5 minutes after a wash, and it’s that way 6 months of the year. Body panels and components almost always rust through before 100,000 miles.

I sold it later on but even today the person who bought it off me has no complains with the engine & drivetrain whatsoever. Good old mineral oil and basic service like plugs and filters can really make the engine outlast it's owners. A bulletproof shield is only as effective as the person wearing it.

A Good Practice. When you buy a vehicle buy a notebook with a pocket in it or a notebook and a folder. Keep every receipt and service order in the folder. Write the date and miles on them if they aren't on it. Use the notebook as a log book and maintenance record. Write down day miles and issues when you have them and record repairs when they are done also if the repair was effective and fixed the issue or if you needed to have it repaired again to resolve the issue. Always photocopy register receipts. Thermal Tape what most register receipts are printed on will do a disappearing ink trick. This is .out important with parts & batteries that you may need to warranty down the road. Very hard to warranty a 4½ year old battery with a 5 year warranty when the receipt you have is a blank piece of paper. I keep a notebook file in my phone as well with all the same information. I also note what maintenance items I have yet to do so I can budget for them and try not get hit with a surprise repair bill.

Always loved those nice 4runners, loved my 99 Solara also. But, like CCN says, I bought it used at 30K miles and didn't get any service records. The older it got with me, the more I realized that its first 30K miles were rough ones with little or no care. I still wish I kept it though, instead of trading it for this 09 camry. Again, just like CCN says, it's all in the maintenance. The nicest Toyota isn't going to last without good maintenance, whereas a lesser quality car might last a long time with "proper maintenance". It is just a myth that you can just drive and drive these cars, expecting them to last forever. This is where rare guys like CCN come in, someone like him will know what to do even though you might not. I know everyone laughs when I tell them all my service is done at the dealer, but I just don't like going here/there/everywhere in search of low service prices. The dealer knows me, knows I take care of the car, and knows what I expect (well most of the time anyway). I would do more of the maintenance, but don't have a lift, it's all I can do to crawl under to change the oil every 3000 miles. My Camry almost has 200K miles on original oil burner engine, I still get almost 3000 miles before it is down a quart though. I am starting to worry about rust underneath, and think it almost time to give up on this car, but don't know what to buy next, cant afford 35K for a new Camry and don't know if I even want one of them.

No issues in the last two years, pulls like a train from idle, uses no oil and oil stays clean to 3800 miles, when I change it. Little tip for scenes like at 2:10 ... just hold your other hand behind the object you're trying to show close up. It'll give the camera something larger to focus on and notice (so to speak) that there's something close. Otherwise it'll try to average out the focus for the entire image and actively "ignores" the comparatively small thing that is close to it like it has done here
