You can nest radial menus. For example you have a radial menu with 3 options: Menu A, Menu B and Menu C. When you click one of them, a new radial menu appears, each with different commands. Great for games with a lot of keybinds, like RTS.
@McSpuddles
@McSpuddles Год назад
On the topic of RTS I like to use long press on a control to set a group and short press to select it. You have to add an additional command as a long press and then a sub command to that to press ctrl or whatever at the same time.

Thanks for the shout-out! Great vid. Especially appreciate you going into the detail of manually entering in values for flick stick and other Steam Input sliders to really fine-tune your settings. That's so useful and so easy to miss. As for other Steam Input tips, I'd love to see folks get creative with the touch sensitive sticks. I think Valve mainly had touch-activated gyro in mind, but if you have gyro always on you can use them for other things. For example, if you like using the touchpad instead of the stick for large-scale camera control, the stick can be a dedicated weapon-wheel input, with the weapon-wheel being activated when you touch the stick (just like the touchpad weapon-wheel trick shown in this video, but swapping touchpad and stick)

the #1 tip is to REDUCE your deadzones for every game, manually. don't just rely on the global option, every game can be optimized. The best tip i can give is that most console ports are designed with an Xbox pad in mind, big deadzone in the middle baked in right into the game as soon as it detects your Xinput. We don't want that deadzone, so instead of a right stick you select MOUSE for the right stick, set a wide or extra wide response curve, reduce the deadzone to the minimum your sticks allow befpre they start drifting, now you can aim at heads much more precisely without any of the fancy other controls, like you are used to PLUS, it still is detected as a gamepad so any autoaim systems from the game will still be active. ...all you get is a much more precise stick, without even replacing it with a HAL sensor or anything like that. In Desktop mode when the right stick controls the mous, there is also a giant deadzone, in yet another menu that is just for Steam Desktop, you can reduce that also by a ton and then you'll actually be able to make small precise adjustments instead of constantly overshooting... once you feel the difference by just moving the mouse on desktop, THAT is the difference you get when you aim at heads in shooters. ALWAYS optimize your deadzones.

@War on Winter Can't say that my touchscreen felt inaccurate... but i'm using it as little as possible to not get smudges on the screen. I also have no clue if there are any options or settings for touchscreen, i think i looked at pretty much everything that you could reasonably find in the various menu screens, but no, nothing about touchscreen i could point you to... sorry.

I think it’s really cool that you brought attention to Flick Stick! It has a lot of potential, *BUT* it can be a very steep learning curve for people who are not used to using gyro controls. A good alternative is to manually activate the ‘Gyro as Mouse’ in Steam Input, and make sure the Gyro itself is set to ‘Always On.’ This way you still control your character the way most players are used to, but you also overcome the lack of aim assist in a lot of PC games because you can now use the gyro to do quick and precise aiming. I uploaded a Doom 2 video yesterday that demonstrates how well this work.

If you're using the outer ring binding, I highly recommend setting the haptics on the binding to "high." I had trouble knowing where the threshold for sprinting was until I figured out that you could pair the haptics with it. Another "must have" setup I use with the right trackpad for FPS's is binding a mode-shifted DPad underneath the normal mouse controls. You set it up to turn into a button press-style mapping on right pad click. That way when you click the pads on the corner, you'll get different inputs. I use these in place of the actual buttons all the time. It's much faster when you don't have to take your thumb off the pads at all. And if you want to get real spicy with it, you can also add a fifth button press in the center of the pad by inverting the outer ring binding on the DPad mapping. So you get five different button presses, all without needing to pick up your finger. It's the first thing I bind in almost any game now. Literal game changer.
@johnnyboy35
@johnnyboy35 Год назад
This is interesting. Could you provide a real world example, and is there a genre you specifically prefer using this for?
@kas4f2
@kas4f2 Год назад
@@johnnyboy35 Sure! My general setup for an FPS game is to have the interact/reload button as a center press in the touchpad. Then I'll usually map weapon swap buttons to left or right touchpad presses and other frequently used abilities to the up and down button presses. And I'll typically have jump and crouch mapped to the back paddles. The idea is to be able to keep your finger on the touchpad as often as possible. For me it just feels better than having to reach for the buttons on the side while your character can't look around at all. But your mileage may vary.

I have played all my life with Keyboard and mouse, but when I started to use controllers I can't get past the idea of using it for all games instead for only racing games, platformers... I have seen the Steam controls instructions and there’s instruction on the trackpad that I did not find for joystick. It’s “consistent horizontal cursor movement” to set the rotation output angle, so you can adjust your natural swipe axis. I noticed that with Powerwash simulator, my thumb was too used to my xbox controller and that my horizontal turns were diagonals. My left turn was also different then my right. There is a setting to reduce vertical inputs to compensate this when looking up is not often used, but I want to keep the 1:1 ratio for games like Doom eternal. I tried to change the joystick behavior but did not find new rotation setting appear. Great video by the way.

Here's a tip... you can get Steam Input to perform a sequence of actions using multiple commands and the fire start delay. I just uploaded a community layout for Papers, Please yesterday that uses this to perform quick macros for things that the game doesn't even have keybinds for. Because I can chain commands together, making it first move the mouse cursor to a specific spot on screen, then click the left mouse button once there, it even returns the cursor back to the original position at the end of the macro. The game also has a few keybinds that you have to upgrade the booth to unlock in the game, but because I'm using a quick sequence of commands I can perform that action with a button press, even if you haven't unlocked the keyboard shortcut for it yet.
@basshabits292
@basshabits292 Год назад
Very late question, but still, can you explain how do you do macros and multi-button combos? More specifically, I'm playing Sifu ATM, there's lots of combos in this game that I'd like to map to just a single press of a button. I'm trying to get my R4 button to execute this sequence: left stick down - left stick up - X and I can't get it to work. I know it's possible, people do it in Street Fighter a lot I think. What would be correct or ideal setting for fire delay on buttons in this case? If you see this reply and know the answer, thanks in advance!
@dayveeman
@dayveeman Год назад
@@basshabits292 So you can use Add Extra Command to trigger multiple inputs with a single button press. Then in each commands settings Fire Start Delay gives the delay before the input is sent, you can use this to stagger the multiple commands so they fire off in the proper order. Fire End Delay basically tells it how long to hold an input. So for your use case you'd want 3 commands assigned to R4, Lstick down, Lstick up, X. Lstick down should have a Start Delay of 0 and maybe an End Delay of 25. Lstick up should have a Start Delay of like 30 and an End Delay of 50. X should have a Start Delay of 50, End Delay of 0. This will push down for 25ms, then press up 5ms later and hold up for 50ms, 20ms after up is pressed, while up is still being held X is pressed (I'm assuming you have to press X before you release up, so those 2 inputs have to overlap). I don't currently have sifu to test this, but this sounds like a standard Street Fighter 2 sequence (spinning side kick). In SF2 you have to "charge" down for a bit before pressing up. If that's the case in sifu, then add an End Delay to Lstick down so it charges for a bit, and whatever number to add it its End Delay, add that same number to the Start Delay values of the other 2 inputs so they're pushed off for a bit. It takes a bit to learn the system, but once you have it down it's very powerful. I did run into an issue with the same input twice in a row, I'm not sure if it's that's still and issue or if it has been fixed.

Outer Ring Binding Sprint is so much better on the large trackpads of the steam controller imo, where a: a stick isnt fighting you to return to center so holding any arbitrary output value is easier b: there is more surface area for precise movements, so there is more to sacrifice to the outer ring while still preserving the full range of the stick (assuming joystick mode instead of dpad mode with wasd bindings, where the extra surface area doesnt matter so much) Its a trick I've been using for years. Making sprint an extension of movement goes a long way towards making the entire configuration more efficient.

When playing games like visual novels or other games with large amounts of text reading where you have to keep clicking to advance it, try binding it to touching a trackpad. It requires less physical effort. A button press isn't a lot, but doing it 5000 times in a row for an hour is still a bit annoying, and this helps, you also don't have to stretch to touch it like tapping the touch screen.

@8BitCerberus
@8BitCerberus 2 года назад
No it didn't. It got clarified from the vague "After Q3" to the definitive "Q4". After Q3 means after quarter 3 of the year, and could only ever have been Q4 or later. You were never in Q3. Well, you may have originally been Q3 back in July-November 2021, before everyone got pushed back 2 months when they announced the delay. But back then there was no Q3 estimate, it was either December 2021, Q1, Q2 or After Q2, so your estimated availability was "After Q2", which eventually became "After Q3" when they clarified the Q3 shipments back in ... March? They just recently announced that everyone that had already reserved one will be getting their Deck this year, which is great because "After Q3" could not only mean "Q4" but could also stretch out into 2023, even 2024, 2025, etc. if they were plagued by production shortages. Sounds like now even people reserving about a week ago will be getting one this year.
