Take/Deal Damage And Death | Decrease Health From Hunger, Oxygen, etc - Unreal Engine 4 Tutorial

Hey guys, in today's video, I'm going to be showing you how to decrease the player's health and deal damage based upon your hunger, oxygen, thirst, etc systems. This can also be used for any type of damage being dealt, for example attacks. It will also play a sound effect and kill the player if the health reaches 0.

I've been looking all over. I really hope you can help me out. I've used this system, along with your fall damage. And all is good. I juat added a death animation once health hits 0. Problem is the animation stops on the first frame and resets to idle, and flickers between that and the first frame of the death animation... any ideas? *EDIT* got the flickering figured. I accidently had two update animations going for it and its was messing with which one to execute i thibk haha. But now he just freezes on first frame of death animation.

Great tutorial Matt! I have one question tho, Can it be used in the level blueprint instead of the Character BP? I am hoping this will work in a certain level that is harmful to the player. Thanks!

Thank you! And I suppose yes you could do that too, you could either create it in the Character BP and then call the function from the level blueprint by casting to the character BP, or just cast to the character in the level blueprint to access the player's health variable. Hope this helps :)

okay how do you make it stop hurting you edit: figured out a way to fix it: i just made it check if all situations to decrease hp are over and when they are over i made it make the damage 0 even though this is not a great solution it is still better then nothing

when I load up my game's main menu, it shows that my hunger is going down, can you tell me how to make the hunger mechanic to only work when I click play in my main menu, thx

Hey, is your main menu in a different level? If not, you could pause the game off of event begin play, and then unpause it after pressing start. This would prevent your hunger from decreasing, and other stuff you don't want to happen, from happening. Hope this helps :)

@@MattAspland actually my main menu is on another lvl, and when I press play it opens my game lvl, is it still possible to fix?

@@fkmeta3479 Absolutely still fixable yep. Are you spawning in your character in the main menu level then? If so, you don't want to. Also, make sure that in the game mode you don't have your character in there. You can see this by going to "Window>World Settings" and it will appear on the right. This is then under "Game Mode Override"
