Sadly, we have lost both Ray Brown and Gene Harris. Two of my all-time favorite musicians. I used to catch Gene Harris all the time when he played at the old Idanha Hotel in Boise. You could sit around sipping some adult beverages half the night, and just get lost in the music. Great times.
Piano...yeah I know...long time since I've been on the old channel thing...Gene Harris...(as a guitar player/wood-shedder I still appreciate the genius of Gene Harris)..ditto Monty Alexander..
I've got sheets if anyone is interested, because I did some transcription of Gene Harris Songs e.g. Summertime, Black and Blue, The Song Is You...gooogle for geniusharris and jimdo and you will find it :) youtube blocks the direct way, sorry
Ray Brown is probably one of the best jazz musicians ever. But i still can not find this magic colaboration between him and his piano player as i find it between Jaco and Joe Zawinul!
Unreal that viewing these fine musicians causes some to call Diana Krall insipid... Ray Brown mentored Krall and worked onstage with her. She carries on the tradition of piano jazz/blues a la Gene Harris in fine style. You’re dissing her because she is also attractive... gee, what a shame.
People get bummed out because these jazz greats always seem to mentor youngish, not-unattractive-ish artists. Either you just let talent speak for itself in the end or you let it bother you. I don't really care because I'm happy to sift through what's out there and come to my own conclusions.
Because he can :-) Reminds me of a sign above the door of an Artist's studio here in West Chester PA. "All ye who enter here - Spare me your praise, or your criticism - I need neither - For I know what I am doing and am not doing it specifically for you." To my ears, nothing Ray plays is out of the groove.
@@barbonestreet Nicely put, I'm not a musician myself, the only I can say, for what I listen & see in this video, is that Ray Brown is a great bassist.
The first two examples you timestamped are 16th notes. You usually don't swing those. And jazz rhythm is more free flowing anyway than quantized daw music or whatever it is you come from. You'll get used to it!
I had to look it up too. No surprise with that statistic, given the average person's taste in music, but I also not surprisingly noticed when doing an image search, that there has been an obvious "sex sells" promotion of her. Not my thing, and I also wouldn't care to see Ray Brown and Gene Harris on stage in Fredericks of Hollywood getup either.
jazzman126 Diana Krall's videos of the song "East Of The Sun" are all very nice, with improvisations on the piano as interesting and beautiful as any top musician's.You're assuming that coz many an artist's success is largely due to their looks, and she's attractive, therefore it's her looks that have given her success-but you'd be wrong, she clearly also has the talent.
