- So... Geraldine just kind of disappeared. Tony got left alone... For hours... James called the cops. They're saying they just need to take her in for a few hours.
- I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do here... I... I don't think I can stay here for this...
- Oh... Oh, God... Oh, well.
- Miss...
- Okay, just a sec...
- Mam, we'd like you to come with us.
- Geraldine, you need to go with them, okay?
- Just a sec.
- Geraldine, just go with them, honey. We'll be here when you get back.
- Okay, just a sec, Mom. Look, James, I got chicks. They need, er, milk. I think...
- What?
- They're for Tony, I got 'em at the pet store. Aren't they... Margo! Are you back? I missed you!
- Okay, mam...
- Can I just have a minute? I just... I really need to talk to that lady.
- Hey! How you doing? I haven't seen you in a really long time. Really long time. Is this what it takes to get you back? How you been?
- What... What happened, Geraldine?
- I'm an alcoholic, moron. Nothing happened. This is my natural state. What... What happened... Really? Why wouldn't I ask that of you? You just disappeared, Margo. What a fucking obvious move! You... You think that everything can be worked out if you just do the right move? That must be thrilling. I think it's thrilling. I don't agree. Don't! Don't do that. I am the embarrassment? Me? Do.. Do you know we're doing the same fucking thing here?
- Okay, I don't understand what you're trying to say.
- I think you're a bigger idiot than I am. I think you really fucked up, Margo. In the big picture... Life has a gap in it, it just does. You don't go crazy trying to fill it like some lunatic. Speaking of fucking up... Okay, let's go. It was kind of fun. It's harder to talk honestly with people when you're sober as I'm sure you can imagine, officer. You fuck any prostitutes lately? Smash any vegan faces?
- Get in the car, please, mam.
- See, it's fun! Am I driving?

i absolutely love when comedic actors/comedians take a serious role and nail it (see The Truman Show, Good Will H). that's what silverman did here and the result is so amazing.

Comedians more often than not excel at drama roles

@@jhanturandall2519that’s because comedians are some of the most tormented souls. They have so much emotional depth to pull from. If they didn’t laugh at their life they’d most likely cry.

@@DaniHGirlAnd it is way harder to be a comic actor than a dramatic actor, even if you are not a tormented soul. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Eugene Levy aren't tormented and never have been, but they are great. Now think of how many great dramatic actors there are. A lot more.

I love that the song playing on Sarah Silverman's car radio is Stand Tall by Burton Cummings. It's a song about how pride can make us believe that we deserve someone better than we have now.

I love how Margot is all judgmental and then the tables are turned with some wise words coming from the person she was judging.

@JimmySteller
@JimmySteller 2 года назад
@@user-qm3nd3wo3v She's absolutely judgmental from her first question. "What happened?" She's casting the first stone with the way she asked that question, the way she's looking at Geraldine, and Geraldine rightly calls Margot out for her own behaviour this past while.

I don't think Geraldine and Margot's marriage situations bear much comparison. James is a real dear and loves her through thick and thin. Margot didn't have that with Lou. If Geraldine thinks her life has a gap, then Margot has an abyss. I don't think Margot is judgemental; she just saw the relapse differently Geraldine understood that relapse is all part of it. She totally missed it about Margot though. Was guilty of the very same thing: over-simplifying.

@@gwenlewis4443 Ger throw away longtime sobriety to get drunk, Margot threw away a 5 year marriage for lust.
@gwenlewis4443
@gwenlewis4443 11 месяцев назад
@@yusufraage8554 Her 5-year marriage was in trouble and when she tried to talk about that, Lou dissed her. Lou wouldn't talk about having children, their sex life, thoughts, feelings, worries, nothing. Just co-existence under the same roof, playing out roles, which he planned to do until his dying day. Margot was not happy with that. Lust alone isn't a basis either, so I hear what you are saying, but that doesn't mean that Margot's marriage to Lou was working. He basically drew a comparison with a schoolmate who lost a testicle, as if that would be a worse fate than losing Margot. What works as a 5-year marriage doesn't necessarily work as a 10-year marriage and beyond. Maybe a lust-based relationship only lasts for one year, but I think there's more hope of insights and a wiser future than opting to live in denial.

I think this movie’s ending was gold. Her new passionate relationship with Daniel got stale too and she’s left alone in the end. I always felt this film was remarking on whether or not we really know what will make us happy. Geraldine got it right. Life has a gap and Margot fucked up big time.

Geraldine's "sometimes life has a gap" sounds like wisdom until you consider Margot's options for "life" : keep pretending to her husband that everything was fine. I'm not saying she should've cheated and left but if I were the husband and found out someone was with me only because they'd feel guilty for leaving....well I'd be a bigger drunk than Geraldine.

She could just divorce him or they could seek therapy. It'll be sad but at least no one would feel betrayed.
@gwenlewis4443
@gwenlewis4443 Год назад
@@salamander8055 It's a point, but she had to fall in love with someone else to realise what she was missing. The issue for me is rather, how can she make a life with Daniel? What has she actually learned? There is always so much to deal with in a couple. Lou would never have agreed to therapy. He didn't care enough. is pride was more important to him. Otherwise, he would have listened to Margot when she showed dissatisfaction with their relationship. The worst of it for me was that Margot thought she could just abandon Daniel and go back to Lou because the novelty was wearing off. This was was a heartbreaking moment. Deeply disappointing, but maybe I am being harsh.
@gwenlewis4443
@gwenlewis4443 Год назад
Lou watched her go. He did nothing. What does that tell us? Margot had already tried to talk to him. Margot didn't really matter that much to Lou. His life didn't change without her there. He has never going to budge an inch.
@salamander8055
@salamander8055 Год назад
@@gwenlewis4443 Lou is an ass and a terrible partner but why don't she just divorce him. She's clearly not happy with her marriage and wants to go fool around and be free. That way no one would get hurt. Unless the thrill of doing something bad was what she was looking for. But that's another can of worms.
@gwenlewis4443
@gwenlewis4443 Год назад
@@salamander8055 I don't think that these things are often very 'tidy'. She didn't consciously want to be with Daniel, couldn't own her attraction to him, and thought it was something 'happening to her'. Affairs can feel like they 'happen' to us, but in fact, we DO them. The reasons why we do them are also deep. Margot wasn't figuring any of this out. She asked Lou for a divorce as soon as she realised she had strong feelings for Daniel and couldn't let him go. I think she did the best she could in the circumstances. The problem was she then jumped straight into an intense relationship without building a better foundation for herself. It's a psychological wipe-out to lose your home, in-laws, and mutual friends on top of a marriage. A passionate relationship can also be thorny territory. You have to have reliable aspects of your life to stabilise it, like life goals, your own friends, meaningful work, and so on. As you point out, it might have been thrilling to Margot to 'run off with someone', and Daniel might have found her unattainability attractive. Maybe all of those things. Margot was already checking out of her marriage though, at some level.

The Buddhists, and Sufis, and Christian mystics, and shamans, and Hindu mystics, and Kabbalists, and contemplatives the world over who have studied the mind closely for millennia - have an answer for this "Life has a gap in it" scene. A great scene, which cuts to the heart of being human. They say, "Yes. It does. That gap is always there. It can never be filled, no matter what you do. However, it's not a problem. If you acknowledge the gap can't be filled, you see that the gap represents the wisdom of what we ultimately are. Nothing - and everything. And knowing this, you will be set free."

U know what? I didn’t cheat but I did leave what everyone kept telling me was “perfect,” & I was “lucky,” & u can’t keep filling voids. Well… I didn’t want to live life feeling scared that I may not have better & wondering daily so much that it ate me up into a sinkhole of depression. I also broke him & at one point I did want him back but knew I was selfish… However, 20 yrs later I did so much, had so many happy moments & ended up with the person I KNOW I’m supposed to be with and I am lucky now.

Good for you. You need to be true to yourself. We get one shot at this life. My only beef is that there is no gain without personal investment. Love costs. Real romance and passion cost more than anything because they are so precious. We are out of the comfort zone once we get into that territory. Margot was ultimately afraid of the unknown. The mystery that once turned her on became threatening. Maybe 20 years up the line she too would have found herself. Too bad if she couldn't do that with Daniel. An opportunity missed methinks. For them both.
