What a masterful scene. You see it all -- the moment when they realize, yep, this is happening, then her almost sickened look as it starts to hit her what she's going to do to her life, then her surrender to it anyway -- then the thudding collision with reality, because losing yourself in a love like that is always a doomed fantasy. This movie is so wise about love. I've thought about it a lot since I saw it years ago. Sarah and Michelle made magic together here.
Michelle Williams is my window to experiences and emotions I always felt about the world but could never express solely. If I feel a certain perspective towards life and its shifting realities I turn to Michelle and somehow I feel she is in tune with them. A conduit and a soul in which the islands we inhabit are bridged through her magnificent performances of yearning, disillusionment shattered and what the universe can shape a person into depending on their circumstances. This Waltz, Blue Valentine, My Week With Marilyn, and Shutter Island leave me gasping for breath with her immeasurable talent and ability to exude the devastation that life can throw upon us... 🌟🌠 💙
I felt like their whole love affair was summed up perfectly in that scene....it's fun, it's flashy...then suddenly reality hits, the music stops....and you're left feeling empty.
