Takeda Shingen (武田信玄, たけだ しんげん) was one of Japan's most famous samurai warlords from the Sengoku period, often called the "Tiger of Kai" (甲斐の虎, かいのとら). Born as Harunobu (晴信, はるのぶ), he quickly demonstrated his military skill by expanding his domain in Kai Province (甲斐国, かいのくに), now Yamanashi Prefecture (山梨県, やまなしけん). Shingen is famous for his battles with Uesugi Kenshin (上杉謙信, うえすぎ けんしん), especially at the Battle of Kawanakajima (川中島の合戦, かわなかじまのかっせん), and for his use of the motto "Fūrin Kazan" (風林火山, ふうりんかざん) from Sun Tzu's "Art of War" (孫子, そんし).
