This is awesome and a must buy for me. I turn 65 in three weeks and have been involved in audio either professionally or as an enthusiast for over 45 yrs. so I have quite a collection just waiting for a portable device like the CP13. Thanks Dave. Excellent review.

I bought a silver and red Fiio player. Totally amazing but for one thing about it. They match the "play" button colour with the front colour, which works well with blue, black, yellow, pink, penguin or whatever colour you could think of, except red. Mine is red. With a red PLAY button. I keep thinking 'don't push the red button as it will erase your cassette' ! and it takes a moment or two to remember that it isn't a record button Other than that, the thing is brilliant and well worth the money.

Access to a speed control potentiometer would be greatly valued on Version 2.0. Plus equalization option for Type II and Type IV tape formulations.

Sorry Dave.. …Can not get on board what so ever with a portable cassette player. I’m a child of the 80’s and I had about 3 of those cassette units… I would carry them in an Adidas bag with 20 cassettes everywhere I went. Now … I carry a tiny MP3 with 1000 flac albums on it! Heaven! Nostalgia aside, I could never go back!

Unfortunately I believe only one or two factory’s are making the actual tape mechanism and head. The mechanism is pretty cheap and doesn’t sound nearly as good as they used to. Fiio put a pretty nice package around it though.

Hi, I love your video, it's so detaily and nice record video in 4K, helping able to look closer at the cp13. I'm going to get the black and white color and the thing I'm still wondering is if the white part is made from plastic or aluminum. Is it easy to get dirty or scratch during use? Can you share? Thank you

Imagine the scenario. You are able to travel back in time and visit the teenage version of you who is walking down the street listening to a Sony Walkman. You tap them on the shoulder and you say: "You see that plastic window on your Walkman" "Yeah, what about it?" "One day you'll be able to get a protector for it" Not mentioning CD's, MP3 files, IPods or streaming!

I was quite the cassette enthusiast back in the 80s. I made hundreds of home tapes of LP and CD using metal and Cr02 cassettes making sure the tape head, pinch rollers, tape guides, etc, were clean, setting the perfect recording levels to get a best recording I could. I’m sure you remember all the noise reduction technology that was used back then (Dolby B, C, dbx) which has different effects on reducing tape hiss but I could get pretty darn close to the quality of a CD or LP. I rarely bought pre-recorded tapes as their sound quality was pretty bad. I may have to buy one just for nostalga sake.

I have been eyeing these on Hifigo and really want to dip my toes back into the cassette tape water but I only have maybe a handful left... all my old cassettes are either long gone or my parents may still have them. Either way, awesome review and it's so good to see cassettes coming back kinda 😃

My issue with this product is it's using the same cheap cassette mechanism as every other new cassette player today, because it's literally the only mechanism still being made. You'll be much better off buying a vintage restored player.

This is a big step forward to the future of new, better players. The frequency response is quite good for a new player, it can hit above it's rated specs, and FiiO has said they're going to invest in making better models in the future.

Would have liked a review evaluating how it performs as a cassette player. There are concrete methods for discerning the actual quality of the cassette mech. You did none of them in this video.

Correct - this unit is all about the journey, not the destination. Like albums, people generally enjoy the physical experience. Opening a cassette tape and pushing it into a mechanism and pressing buttons...what's not to like? It's like cracking open a nut...it takes a little time and it's a bit clunky, but somehow the experience is worth the effort.
