Beautiful, touching song. The movie Dune wanted songs for their soundtrack and they thought that the guy who wrote Mr. Roboto would make a good science fiction song for them and Dennis gave them the touching ballad Dessert Moon. That is why he talks about the Dune in the song. The song was rejected for the soundtrack because it wasn't exactly what they were looking for and Dennis released it as a solo project after Styx went into hiatus. It actually reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 though for a mere week before it kind of free falled. The video really is good. It seemed like all Dennis wanted to do at that time - make a movie! Glad you reacted to it. I still love that video!

A great song from Dennis DeYoung and his solo effort in 1984. This video was on huge rotation on MTV, and tells a great story. These are the type of songs Deyoung wanted to do, and caused the breakup of Styx unfortunately. Still, its a great song and I loved your reaction!

Thankyou for reacting to this unbelievable song. This song holds a very special place in my heart because of its story which almost reflects every teen age life back in the days when friends were like family and shared their joys, pains, secrets, heartaches, dreams and crazy ambitions and the memory that defined who you are in a time of innocence and discovery....and each chosen path in life.....and of first loves and broken promises....shit Im starting to get really dramatic now....but its when u reconnect with old friends who knew you from way back and talk about the old days.....its something SPECIAL....the Bond is always there. by the way Dennis De Young is the lead from the band STYX

Love you two. You know me and my STYX. Big part of it was this gentleman. He is an amazing performer and arguably one of the best front man of my generation. He has never failed to put on a big show. One of the saddest days of my life when Dennis broke from the band. The silver lining was his solo venture, which began with this song, the album's title track. Desert Moon. I immediately bought the cassette at the army PX right after Army basic training., Along with Walkman player so as to listen to it on the bus ride home. Missouri to Oregon is a long trip. I wore it out since it was the only cassette tape I had. Beautiful music some of Dennis best. You should all take time to listen. The video was even better. It was the height of Mtv. He is a beautiful storyteller.

This Style really was Mr. DeYoung's ace in the hole. Song like "Don't Let It End," "Show Me the Way," "While There's Still Time" (all Styx songs) and then "Call Me," "Harry's Hands," "Crossing The Rubicon," "I Believe In You," "To The Good Ol' Days" (with Julian Lennon" and "Hello, Goodbye," just to name a smattering of songs he's done show why he is truly a master of this thing called music and song writing, producing.

Absolutely classic Dennis. Of course, Dennis actually IS from Chicago (and he's been married to his high school sweetie, Suzanne Feusi, since 1970), but nobody says music has to be autobiographical. What had happened was that this was the year after "Mr. Roboto" and Tommy Shaw had left the group, in part because he *really* couldn't stand the whole "Kilroy Was Here" theatrical stage show the band had to do for that tour…and on a more practical level, his heroin use was getting out of control (the band even wrote a song about it) and he needed therapy. The rest of the group (James Young and the Panozzo twins) wanted to replace Tommy, since they had just been offered a big stadium tour like what Journey did in 1982 and they wouldn't even need new songs, as they could do a Greatest Hits album. But Dennis said they should wait for Tommy, and he already had some songs written, so he made a solo album instead. The song was a hit (#10 on the charts), but perhaps it would have been better to move on. Because Tommy didn't come back; he joined Damn Yankees instead. (You might recall that Tommy had never really wanted to be in Styx after all; when they wanted him to replace John Curulewski [and you still need to do "A Day" or "Mother Dear" to hear JC], Tommy's mates in his old band, Harvest, had to talk him into the gig. And part of the reason why John C. left the band is that Dennis is…not the easiest guy to get along with in the studio, allegedly. So there was an argument for them to move on.) And so it took almost an entire decade for them to make an album without Tommy. And then they got Tommy back for two albums, but there were still tensions, and this time Tommy got James Young to help kick *Dennis* out of the band. And then came the lawsuits… Momentum is a hard thing to hold onto, even though Styx had just had FIVE mult-platinum albums in a row. You just had Survivor doing "The Search is Over" and the reason that Jimi Jameson sang that even though original singer Dave Bickler got them their breakthrough on "Eye of the Tiger" is that Dave developed vocal nodules and had to take a year off singing, and the rest of the band was all "sorry, Dave, we can't wait.." Life's rough, sometimes, For more Styx, try the Curulewski tunes named above, or Tommy doing "Crystal Ball" or "Lights" or James Young doing "Miss America" or "Midnight Ride" …or Dennis doing "Best Thing" (the first song he wrote for Suzanne) or the beautiful "Golden Lark" or the affirming "I'm Okay" or the song Dennis HATES but I love, "The Grove of Eglantine". For solo Dennis try "Call Me". Heck, you can even check out Dennis when he was in the national tour of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar", doing "Pilate's Dream". Thanks, again.

I still remember the 1st time I heard it at a party at one of my older friend Dave's house in November 1984 when i was 13. it was an amazing time in my life. it does still bring back some very special memories of the group of friends back then including my unrequited 1st love. After over 30 yrs i have not seen him but can still remember his smile, laugh, voice, and his eyes - he was a very special guy with heart of gold & i was lucky enough to meet him when i was almost 13 and he was a few months older then i was Even though last time i saw him or spoke to him was in 1990 every now & again i think of himand smile

Like with a lot of bands, it's fun to argue about who contrubuted the most to the bands sound. You often get the answer, such as with Dokken when Don Dokken formed his 'solo' records super band and George Lynch formed his Lynch Mob. But with Styx and Dennis and James and Tommy there records are all Styx like, but also very different. The Styx sound would never have happened without their collaberation. By the way, Don Dokken 'Stay', now that I think of it.
