Learning another language in your second language is INSANE. Multilingual king 👑
@irissupercoolsy
@irissupercoolsy 5 месяцев назад
English is my second language, Dutch is my first language. There are just better resources to learn almost any language in English. I feel like a lot of people do it that way. + English/Dutch/French aren't that far apart.
@priiifrg
@priiifrg 5 месяцев назад
It's not insane though. Like the comment above said that's pretty normal for someone who speaks english as their second language for example.

This is a crazy full circle moment. I found your videos when I was in high school and you inspired me to travel and learn languages to the point where they are some of my biggest passions in life. After I graduated, I started learning Arabic and now, after 4 years of study, Levantine-Arabic is my strongest foreign language. And now you’re learning Arabic! How cool is that!

On this note, definitely study the grammar and vocabulary of Modern Standard Arabic. When you’re ready to learn to really speak it, study Levantine-Arabic or shammy colloquially, because it is the most similar to MSA. This is the dialect spoken in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Iraq. I cannot wait for your future Jordan travel videos because you will fall in love with the country.

As someone who has studied both French and Arabic, this is so funny to watch and see you discover Arabic. It reminds me of when I first learned it. You will soon see that Arabic script in any font in any textbook will always be tiny. That will never change, unfortunately. 😂 as I continue to take Arabic online, I still run into this all the time and have to squint when I read sometimes. Great to see you branch into a non-romance language! ❤

My story with Arabic started very similarly: I love learning languages so one day I randomly decided to take some classes. I didn't mean to learn it fluently, I was just curious. Two years later now I'm living in Jordan as an exchange student, learning Arabic all day. I'm absolutely in love with this language, it was the best decision of my life. I also agree that Arabic is not impossibly hard you just have to put a lot of effort and time into it. That moment when something clicks in your head and it suddenly all makes sense is so amazing!! I understand u sooooo much. Both of my parents are Algerians, but they never taught me how to speak in Arabic or respond in this specific dialect, so I only knew how to understand the dialect but not to speak it. I took Arabic classes (classical arabic) in university for 1 semester and I loved it. It wasn't that easy at first since the class was in English (its my second language). I used to stress a lot in those classes bc the big majority of the class already knew the basics. Even tho , the teacher was so lovely and nice with us, I was so chocked when I found out that ended up with an A in this class ^^. I don't know how to speak it yet lol, but I learned how to read and write in Arabic !

bro you are Destined to fall in love with arabic, I am genuinely surprised you haven't cracked this open before, it's such a top tier language family for anyone who has a lifelong love affair w/ language learning. I feel like in a few years time you're gonna have your "good husband" dialect (reliable for communication, practical, always there to fall back on) and your "love affair" dialect (FUN, stylized, sexy and speaks to ur soul, and totally not practical except in a really specific circumstances but makes u feel alive), and i can't wait to see it lol plus I 100% agree that arabic does not feel substantially harder to learn than other languages (having learned just french and spanish before), except that of course there are less stepping stones to english than the romance languages, you're learning a new alphabet (sorry, *abjad lol), and the commitment phobia you uncover when trying to pick a dialect 🤪 and regarding the names - a lot of Arabic names are actually common adjectives or nouns (Kareem is "generous", Said is "happy", Jamila/Jamil is "beautiful"), so we english speakers have a bigger base for vocabulary than we realize. it's kinda like learning english when you know a bunch of people named "Destiny", "Hope", "Summer" and realizing you already have an english vocab list in ur brain oh and I think of the arabic letter forms as cursive, basically, and they do have a stand-alone "isolated" form. someone can correct me if i'm wrong, but i think if you were doing a letter jumble game, you would probably just use the isolated forms of the letters until they're put into a full word, at which point you would connect them for reading flowiness.

Some recommendations for fun n learning: - the "can middle eastern countries understand each other?" video by World Friends on youtube is sooooo cute and gives you a great grasp of a few dialects and how they differ, and is just such a heartwarming video overall lol - I highly HIGHLY recommend the introduction to arabic course on Language Transfer (and any language course LT offers) if you want to have a good basis to become conversationally fluent - he teaches based in Egyptian dialect, but he does it in a well-rounded way where he also explains how you might hear it in other dialects if the difference is substantial. so it helps you grow not just one dialect, but your global understanding of the language family to help train your ear to recognize the same word in a different dialect - he also does a good job of explaining that arabic learners are going to have many influences on how they speak based on who they learned from, who they talk to, what music they listen to, etc, and that mix is a natural and beautiful reflection of a person's life/journey - Language Simp on youtube has the fucking funniest "learning arabic" content out there imo - for learning the alphabet, it was super helpful for me just to transcribe names, places, even sound effects lol (ويييييييي instead of wheeeee), etc just for practice. that way you're growing that letter recognition muscle without needing to rely on vocabulary. Also, if you have the ReversoContext app, sign up for arabic "words of the day" and when they pop up on your phone, try to pronounce the word out loud - then go into the app and play the audio to see if you got the word right - music... there are so many maghrebi rappers popular in france, and most of their songs are a mix of french and arabic (and english and spanish and... ppl from the maghreb are born polyglots), so my selection is pretty biased. but check out Soolking, kouz1, Mocci, NORDO (coolest voice ever), and the entire genre of Raï music when you feel like something more old school - other people PLS reply with your music recommendations, mine are so limited lol ENJOYYYYYY

that woman who was singing was Nancy Ajram!! She's basically the Taylor Swift of the Arab world, her music is so nostalgic and lively, I would recommend it even to non-arab speakers :) (also insane that you got to see her I'm Egyptian and her music was basically my entire childhood) Also ,I'm sure you know this but you should listen to Dalida's music, she has songs in practically every language under the sun

I took a term of Arabic (10 weeks) my last year of college and loved learning it. Pronunciation was definitely the hardest part, but felt so good when my native speaker professor told me I spoke well towards the end of the term. We had to learn vocab for both the formal dialect and levantine (which I think we chose collectively as a class). Beautiful and lovely language I want to get back into it.

9:26 I'm a native Arabic speaker in my second year in uni majored in arabic literature and linguistics and it's actually my very first time realizing that we don't actually have a verb to be ( I mean we do have one in our vocabulary but we don't use it in every sentence just subject and the verb) It's actually amazing how much we can learn from each other even when we're completely from different countries culture and linguistic background

Ahlan, Ahlan Damon! The Arabic speaking and Arabic learning communities I've been a part of have been some of the most fun, inspiring, and uplifting spaces in my life. Arabic is the true language of the poets IMO. It's absolutely beautiful and always allows me to feel and express as much as I want. I hope you keep having fun with it!

BRO: "Yallah" (To God; let's go), "Adios" (To God I go; goodbye); also "abd" is slave but one could also say a "servant" or "one who is in in a state of divine service to God".
