Taking a Wilderness Bike Ride in Alaska

I decided to make a shakedown fat-biking trip along the 60 mile McCarthy Road in Alaska. I also journeyed to Kennecott, an old mining town that experienced its heyday between 1911-1938. The road conditions going in were rather pleasant, but temperatures warmed up during my stay in McCarthy and the return trip was a slog, slushy, muddy mess. Such is life.

So nice to get a little history along your ride. What a slog! You really pushed the limits there! Maybe hiking is the better way, but you met your personal challenge! Congratulations! I think that may have been the same mine that another vlogger I follow featured when she was in the area (Itchy Boots). I remember those old typewriters! My mom refused to type on anything but, even into her 90s just a few years ago. I pecked on a few keys myself in the early days. So great to know you inspired the kids in your classes by getting outdoors for such a fun learning experience…something I’m sure they’ll never forget!

Thanks Maureen. My first typewriter was manual, and I remember I had to make accuracy a priority, otherwise it was difficult to fix errors. What I like about this channel the most is the way we all seem to encourage one another, and the world could use more of that. Thank your for your kind words and your example.

that was a really cool video , I watched it on my TV instead of my phone. I love those old train tressels. that town with the mill is very friendly looking and it is so great that they are fixing up that old mine, great piece of history. my dad started working in the coal mines in 1920 so I know exactly how those miners were treated. my dad stood on the picket lines with the other miners when the coal companies brought in gangsters from new York and Chicago to break the union. there were some bloody fights at that time. that was a great video Ray, I loved it Dwayne

Thanks Dwayne, Those were brutal times. They broke up a strike at Kennecott in much the same way. The miners really had nowhere else to go. They were pretty captive.

Nice video. I used to watch an older man who always skied Alta, he was well into his 90s and he used to say “ focus on what you can do not what you used to be able to do” you did fine. We all age, the important thing is to keep hitting it.

That man's name wasn't Harold Goodrow from Utah by chance. I went on a few backpacking trips with him back in the day, and he was a model outdoor adventurer. Focus on what you can do, and not on what you used to be able to do. Perfect. I'll remember that and share it again with others. Thank you.

You certainly live in a beautiful part of the world. I like “testing what I have in the tank” as well. That did not look like an easy adventure. 🙂

Well Glen, I am pleased to report that I have enough in the tank for another year of adventure. I hope to hear the same from you.

Loved it! Just finished watching, pausing along the way to look up, read about Mccarthy, Kennecott, & Cordova too since it was mentioned in your video. I had an opportunity to go with a group years ago, & unfortunately, I fell sick that weekend. Welp, now I really must check it out this summer before leaving Alaska. What a beautiful state I've enjoyed for almost 30 years. 💜☺️

It's a beautiful place, perhaps a little too crowded over the Labor Day weekend. I love the town's vibe with all the young people, great restaurants and excellent hiking. You gotta stop there.

Lived in Alaska 30 years and still haven't made it to McCarthy! Maybe this year...

The place always makes me feel young again. Some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet live around McCarthy.
