We have a new video up here talking about boarding horses. Here is part 2 of this conversation: • Taking Care Of Horses:... There are generally two types of boarding, full-board and self-board. Sometimes you can get a hybrid of that depending on the barn you are at, but for the most part it's one or the other. The biggest takeaway from this video we hope is received is that if you are going to do full board, make sure you do your research and check things out thoroughly. There are good barns and bad barns and everything in between. You always want to make sure your horse is taken care of to the best ability of the barn owner and manager, monitoring that shouldn't, but does come with ownership of a horse.
The second takeaway we're hoping is received regarding the difference between self and full board, is the amount of time spent and the quality of time spent with your horse. If you have to be there everyday to take care of your horse, you can check out their health, food, water, environment and in general continue to build a relationship with the horse. If somebody else is doing this then it's on them to be building the horse's manners up on a daily basis and that may not be being done to the quality that you're hoping for. I've seen horses treated quite poorly by those that don't own them and that has translated to the owner who then doesn't understand why their horse is suddenly head shy. I'm not saying it's common, but it happens.
There are pros and cons to both self and full board, obviously if you don't have time or availability to take care of the horse but really want to own it, then full board is the only way and the best way for the horse. It's more costly obviously but you can then dedicate the time you would have spent with your horse taking care of it and instead can do quality work riding or groundwork. It's something to be measured and evaluated as you go.

Is it common for a place to tell the horse owners when to ride what to feed. Your horse when your horse needs the vet or farrier?

I believe it's common. I personally would never tolerate it, but horse people can be pretty arrogant and busy bodies...

Do you have a video on your perspective as a boarding manager? How do you deal with self-service people who do not manage their horses well?
@StableHorseTraining
@StableHorseTraining 7 лет назад
I don't have a video on that, but that's a great idea for a topic to talk about. The problem I would say with the idea of "do not manage their horses well" is that it's subjective. It's like telling a parent they are raising their kid wrong. It's completely subjective in a lot of cases. Outside of pure neglect, like poor health, going hungry, no water or very poor water conditions, out of control rain rot or mud fever etc, it's hard to deal with I think. I've seen some barn managers just go straight to the SPCA as dealing with the owner isn't an option. There are many barns that are in it for the money, like paycheque employees that do the minimum and go home. To them, the minimum is plenty good enough, right up until they become more knowledgeable or wiser and there becomes a new minimum. That standard is different for everybody unfortunately. There are also many barns that are in it for the horse and won't settle to have self-boarders that are, in their mind, neglectful. Those people become barn hoppers and go from one place to the next just looking to pawn their horse off to somebody that will hopefully take care of it at the least cost possible. Horses are expensive.. I believe that people that come here expect the highest of care, and those that don't think to give such care wouldn't come near here with a 10 foot pole kind of thing. So I don't have to deal with that directly but have seen it a lot unfortunately. It's a good topic, I'll have a think on it and post a video soon to give my own perspective on it outside of this now overly long comment... Thanks for asking though :)

Ok, new video up on the topic. Hopefully it provides a bit of a perspective. After doing this video I realized I have a whole lot more thoughts on the subject so may post another one soon. Anyways, here's part 2 then: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4p3nukACTRk.html

I grew up with horses, I just lost track and I try to catch up. I want to breed one or two foals. Do you have experience in that ? Thank you for posting this video.
@StableHorseTraining

You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't have any experience in breeding but I know a few people that have lots. Did you have any questions? Perhaps I can do a Q&A with them for a video for this channel. That might be interesting...
@leealexander3507
@leealexander3507 6 лет назад
The first question would be why you want to breed? What are the goals you have in mind? What qualities are you breeding to improve upon in your specific horse breed? What do you plan for the foals? While you might sell your foals, realize you must be willing to own your foals and the horses they will become. Get the best quality you possibly can in your foundation mares. Excellent pedigrees for your horse breeding goals, but also make certain you are buying mares you like as individuals. Choose stallions carefully to get the best match for each mare in order to get the result you hope to achieve. Get a mentor if you can. Someone who's horses and breeding operations you admire. You can avoid a lot of errors they have already made and so are able to steer you away from. In order to neither overestimate or underestimate the quality of your breeding stock have another knowledgeable person look them over too. If you don't have a good amount of experience working on a breeding farm please consider doing so before you begin. You can learn a lot about day to day operation as well as gaining experience in things like how to recognize when you need to call the vet in for a mare delivering a foal and what you need to do for the newborn. Not to mention small but highly important things like checking the placenta. Unless you are breeding toward a goal with a specific improvement in your chosen horse breed you hope to achieve please leave breeding to those who do.
