i wish his biggest trouble in the world were half his cookie falling off ;) glad he's doing better, i'd be devastated if you lost him. to me he's not only an embassador for Coendous but for Animal Wonders as a whole. Thank you for taking so much care of him :)
My heart jumped into my throat when I saw this title posted. You have made people all over the world care deeply about prehensile porcupines. Think of how meaningful that is. Your channel, and your mission, really do decrease world suck. Thank you so much for introducing the world to Kemo. We love him and respect you more than we can express.
Poor little Kemosabe. Look after yourself fella and get better soon. There are lots of people that want you to be around for as long as possible, you adorable, grumpy little star.
Aw,. When this animal is poorly, I want to make them soup and tuck them into bed. But that's NOT the way. I made a good decision not to keep them. 🤦♀️😂
I'm crying! I'm so happy he's feeling better, but this whole thing must be so scary for you, Jessie. You are so strong and wonderful to these animals. You have given him such a wonderful, long life.
I am continually impressed by the extent to which Animal Wonders will go to care for their animals. Many good pet owners won’t even do one dental for their cats and dogs. The cost and effort of a porcupine dental with two extractions and rads has got to be massive. Hats off to you, Jessi! And get well soon, Kemo!
Oh the feels. I am so sad that Kemosabe is getting old and could get stolen from you at any time. Him and his little "hey!" sounds are so adorable. He's such an amazing little guy.
I know I will never meet this animal but I am going to bawl like a baby when he passes. I followed his progress on Twitter and worried about him the whole time. So relieved to see him doing better. Thank you for taking such good care of him and the rest of the animals.
Kemosabe continues to be my favorite of all the AnimalWonders pals. It's tough getting old, but Kemo is still a beautiful and sweet boy. Glad he is still chugging along!
I saw Jessi and Kemosabe on Hank Green's Sci Show which is how I discovered Animal Wonders. I love Kemo so much and Jessi too! Humans are amazing because we have the ability to love long distance even though there is no direct interaction. He's going to feel a lot better now thanks to his caring family!
I love Kemosabe so much, I saw the very first video of him on this channel which was the first video of yours I ever watched after scishow - I’ve been watching this channel grow from the beginning and he’s been such an important part of that, it will be very sad when he does leave us as I know he can’t live forever but what a blessing it’s been to have him
He's hilarious @6:31! The way he's all "nom, nom, nom," looking at the camera, until his food falls off and he just freezes, like he was embarrassed and hoped we didn't notice that! LMAO! Or maybe he was just like, "Hey, where'd my food go?" I laugh every time I watch that!
I had to do something similar with my cat. He was dying essentially, but still was enjoying life and wanted to be around me, and I had to give him medicine so he could get more oxygen to his heart. He would NOT eat anything or take oral medicine, so I had to give him shots in his scruff. I am not naturally medically inclined, and giving him shots was so unpleasant. But we do what is needed for the animals we love, even when it is hard. I'm glad to hear Kemosabe is doing a bit better!!!
It's always nice to have the classic humble rabbits, to distract you from your arrogant boss and/or coworkers (the type of co-worker that steals your ideas, and gets all the credit). 😒 👊
When my mothers dog had a seizure the doctors didnt think he'd get better. He wouldn't eat or drink and my mother didn't have the time to watch over him all the time to make sure he had that extra care. I missed a lot of class but was able to talk to a few of my understanding teachers to finish work at home. It wasn't till day 3 that he finally drank some water from my hand. He was weak and needed to be carried down the stairs. I'd bring him for free air ever day and make sure he was comfortable. On day five me and my mother talked about putting him to sleep because he wasn't eating and was miserable. On day 7 I was eating a frozen chicken dinner when he came over to siff at my meal. He wouldn't eat anything unless I chewed it up for him first. For the next 4 days I few him chewed up chicken as much as I could "I now can stand chicken frozen dinners" after that he slowly became better and transitioned to soft foods. He now sleep next to me ever night follows me EVERY where. Even lays next to the bath tub with I take a shower. My mother always jokes about how he's my dog now ha ha
Way to go! Glad Kemo is on the mend! One of the most satisfying things ever is watching a sick animal that hasn’t been eating, eat their food. I’ve teared up/cried a little when the animal starts eating again
So happy to hear that kemosabe is feeling better I can’t believe he’s gotten old the tree fort video seems like yesterday best wished for Kemo be sure to spend a bit extra time with him you won’t regret it 👍
I remember seeing you and Kemosabe for the first time on SciShow. I was so fascinated and amazed by Kemosabe that I did a whole report on prehensile tailed porcupines for school. I'm incredibly relieved and elated to see that his recovery is looking up. Thank you Animal Wonders for enlightening the animal lover in me and for taking such amazing care of animals like Kemosabe.
I am so attached to this little guy, I hope he pulls through. Jessi, thank you so much for taking such awesome care of him and your other critter friends. I hope the path ahead for you is as easy as it can possibly be.
Gday Jessi I was suggested to check out your channel by followers of my own and I’m so glad I did! It’s great to see other people with such a passion for wildlife :) I hope your prickly friend continues to improve as I am well aware how much time goes into caring for a large animal family even when everything’s going well! Anyway Hello from Australia!
6:33 seeing this adorable animal eat makes go aaw so charming & cute in his own way, when he dropped his food his expression was almost like oh no poor cutie >
Sometimes I get paranoid that my cat might be sick, but I just can't pick up on any of the symptoms. I mean, I understand pathology, and as an indoor cat who never interacts with other cats, I know it's rather unlikely that he'd pick up a virus; and any bacterial infection would likely have visible symptoms, but it's one of those things that still sticks in the back of my head sometimes. I just felt like sharing that.
6:32 just CRACKS ME UP every time I watch it. He is SO CUTE the way he holds his "cookie", while looking at the camera, chewing, & making those sounds, but when he drops most of his "cookie", the way he just suddenly freezes is HILARIOUS!! I always wonder what's going on in his little mind!! Is he wondering where his cookie went? Is he thinking, "Ah crap!"? Is he thinking the porcupine equivalent of, "I'm going to pretend that didn't happen?" It's just such a funny response! I imagine him deadpanning, "My cookie.... As you can see,- it's gone."
Can you get Kemo Sabe tooth implants? Also, can we have a 5 minute straight video of nothing but KS making noises????? Edit: my comment was highlighted! I feel so special 😍
Aqua Fractalyne I wish! I've actually looked into dentures or implants for him and all my vets told me they had no experience with that kind of procedure for rodents and it would cost SO much to have a hypothetical veterinary specialist even attempt it. :(
Thank you for answering this! I have a couple years experience making people dentures on an amateur level, and I immediately started searching to learn if veterinary dentures were a thing. I could certainly imagine that getting work like this done by licensed professionals would be supremely expensive. I bet even just getting a decent impression would be quite tricky.
Awww, poor Kemo! I wasn't aware that he was that old already. I hope that he'll still have a couple more years with the excellent care that Jessi is giving him!
Kemosabe is one of my favorite animals to see in the videos! I think his personality is so great and he's such an important ambassador for Animal Wonders!!! I would be absolutely devasted to see his recovery not going well, but of course, Jessi you always take the best care of the animals!!! I hope Kemo keeps getting better and we see him when he's feeling a-okay again! (also I'm still stoked about the Kemosabe mugs and I'm (im)patiently waiting for their release!!!)
I just want to say thank God that Kemosabe survived. I remember seeing him for the first time on Schi Show Talkshow, however many years ago it was by now. And I instantly fell in love with him. I never really had a favourite animal before then, but ever since the Prehensile Tailed Porcupine has definately been my favourite. Once every year or so I get the sudden urge to watch him again, and so today I sat down watching all 11 episodes of Kemosabe's playlist (+ his appearance on Sci Show), and I was moved to tears at least 5 times. I have never seen a Coendou Prehensilis in my life, and probably never will, but having known this guy for what, 5 years, he has gained a special place in my heart, and to learn of his constant teeth problems really hurt. It was so heartbreaking to listen to this story, and I am so glad that he seems to have gotten better.
I'm so glad to hear he made it through this even though he's still struggling to heal completely. In this video when we see him eating the smooshed banana and rodent blocks: his eyes break my heart! You can see in his eyes that he feels yucky. Poor little guy!
I'm so happy Kemosabe is recovering from his ordeal. The work you all do at Animal Wonders taking care of these animals is so inspiring! Keep being awesome :)
Kemo is one of my faves and I was gutted when I saw your tweets that he was unwell. You can really hear the love and passion in your voice in this video, very inspiring.
I m glad kemosabe is recovering...poor guy. Its sad to see people age and get sick and die and its like that with animals too. God Bless you all Thanks for the good work that you do at Animal Wonders!
Are you considering getting his last tooth removed as well? It seems like the likelihood and danger or it starting to rot is only going to increase as he gets older.
Abraxian Absolution We'll only remove it if the tooth becomes rotten or infected. Rodent incisors have an incredibly long root and if it's a healthy tooth the root is firmly attached and would be so difficult to remove causing more damage to the tissue around than it would be worth. I also thought a preventative procedure might be a good option, because the remaining tooth will still need to be trimmed every 3 months, but the possible damage is too great. Having that one tooth actually does help him get small bites of his food into his mouth. I hope his last tooth lasts many more years.
I am so happy that he's at least comfortable. Even if the worst happens please don't be hard on yourself Jessi. It's so very clear that you and everyone at Animal Wonders is doing everything they can for him. Thank you for taking such good care of all your friends and sharing them with us. It's amazing work you do and more important than most people understand. I hope Kemosabe can make it several more years in comfort and relative health.
Poor Kemo. I really feel for him. Last october I ended up in the hospital with sepsis - a raging infection. Nobody knew what was causing it, but we suspected it was because of my wisdom teeth removal a week or two before. I spent days in the hospital, sometimes unable to keep any solid food down, almost being transferred to infectious disease specialists because my antibiotics took so long to work, and I had a raging fever. We finally figured out what was causing the infection - I had two completely infected teeth! Nobody knows how, because it normally happens with major trauma (like getting hit in the face or getting into a car accident), but somehow two of my teeth had such a large infection it caused a granuloma that cut off blood supply to my teeth, and killed them. Luckily, as a human, I could have a root canal and got to keep my teeth. But I really feel for poor Kemosabe. Being that sick isn't fun, at all. And I also ended up eating a lot of my favorite food - milkshakes, during that time. I hope he recovers soon ♥
Awe I'm so glad that he's pulling through I hope he continues to get better, and live longer. this was 2 years ago so I'm guessing he's 11.5 or 12 now?
