I think the one thing I took for granted when i lived in Iceland was the open spaces. I lived in the states now for 26 years and i still can't get used to how everything is off limits. Its like you're trespassing where ever you go. Now when i visit home i hike for hours in the highlands.

Hi Jewells! Lovely video. My daughter and I spent 5 weeks in Reykjavik, late July - late August, 4th trip. One thing I hope I never take for granted is how walkable Reykjavik is, how easy it is to learn the bus system for places that are just outside of walking distance, and how there are always a million things to do! I live in the Hudson Valley and I'm already weary of having to drive so much to do one thing or another. It really doesn't compare!

I live in Sydney, Australia and the main thing that I think some of us take for granted here is the beautiful and sunny weather all year round! I feel like we have nine months of summer and three months when it’s a bit cooler. Also, compared to many places, we are surrounded by a lot of nature and water, if you don’t live near a beach then you’re probably close to a river. I often complain about my life here but you have just reminded me that maybe it’s not so bad that perhaps there are a lot worse places to be! I’m glad that you’re happy in Iceland and that you appreciate it. I really enjoy your videos and I’ve learn a lot from them. ❤️🌹🇦🇺🇭🇺

My wife and I visited Iceland for three weeks in Sept-Oct 2019. We have been to many countries and we have appreciated the time spent in every country where we have traveled. Iceland ranks at the top of our list (certainly my list) for many reasons. I am a geologist, and the location of Iceland astride the Mid-Atlantic rift makes Iceland one of the most interesting land masses on Earth. Although liquor could be a bit less costly in Iceland, I would not mind living there, as I would have no problem brewing beer and distilling alcohol for my own consumption.

I loved Iceland when we visited last fall. This past Aug. we went to Zimbabwe and saw Victoria Falls. Well…..after having seen all the beautiful waterfalls in Iceland I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. Just loved all the different landforms in Iceland and the geothermal hot tub at the end of a cooler, rainy day was so wonderful! We were lucky too that I looked out from our window one night and saw the Northern Lights. We felt very lucky because on the east side it was very rainy and cloudy, but we got some clear skies on the west side. Just one of the most beautiful places on earth!

Hey Jewels, been watching for a few months now; currently in my 40s going back to school due to Covid, and crafting my path to move to Iceland. Could you do a video covering what expats seem to expect before they move there vs how it is after several years? (I’m trying to come over and study at Háskóli Íslands after I finish my MIS degree; was an IT contractor for about 7 years before the shutdown). Hoping to network during my study abroad in 2025, and then while on student visa in 2027/8 and have been seeing mixed info about making friends, not getting the opportunity to practice the language (I’m self-teaching as best I can state-side), and debates on a degree in MIS being less valuable than just coming over and taking the Icelandic as a second language BA degree instead. Thank you for all the vids! (The one you did with Íris for Christmas is one of my faves!)

Konan mín er Icelandic. And I'm a foreigner. I can vouch that the water in Iceland is as good as it's gets. The quality of food as well. No person is immune to health issues, but generally the old folks in Iceland live longer and happier. Retired Seniors don't eat cheap frozen microwaved foods. Mostly home cooked meals and if you know some folks, you get free fish. Frozen home cooked meals are nothing but Icelanders don't like left overs. It depends on the meal though. The water there has the finest quality that's naturally made (though I get a bit weird when retrieving water by any waterfall out in the country when I fill up a water jug and there is a band of sheep around the water and who the hell knows what's flowing in that water). The politics there are generally reserved for old folks to talk about. Younger people aren't too concerned about politics but they are well informed and will have a say or two about some things. Politics doesn't divide people there. There is no team red or blue. I'm happy to marry into an Icelandic family and their family runs deep and they are so festive when it comes to the holidays and some events. There are times you do get bored and have the blues in the winter but it all depends what you do for a living and what you do with your life there. Some people are content, some folks want to study outside of Iceland and see the world and Icelanders love to travel outside of Iceland. Icelanders are super judgmental about Americans. Not that it's a bad thing, but I've heard some things Icelanders say to the point it's just outright disrespectful but they do make a point lol! Such things like "Americans don't speak other languages other than English". Or "the water in America taste like metal". In which case, it is true lol

yikes, maybe a small qualification on that #3 item: easy to take for granted *in the Rvk area* -- up here in the Westfjords, electricity is still pricy & definitely not opening windows in the wintertime! otherwise fully on board with your list ❤
@AllThingsIceland
@AllThingsIceland 11 месяцев назад
That’s so interesting and thanks for sharing that. I wonder why it’s expensive up there.
@Sindrijo
@Sindrijo 11 месяцев назад
@@AllThingsIceland It's because it's the least geothermally active region, most people's homes are not heated by electricity but rather by actual hot geothermal water. Any power generation in in the Westfjords is going to be hydropower however there are not that many hydro power plants there either, the total production is about 90Gwh per year, an average Icelandic home uses about 5.5Mwh per year but that's excluding heating, if a house uses electricity for heating then that becomes about 70-90% of the usage, or about 33Mwh. According to statistics there live about 7400 people in total in the Westfjords, assuming 3 people on average per household that's 2466 homes. 2466 * 33Mwh = 81Gwh, so just from household usage we're already at 90% capacity and we haven't even included things like businesses, factories, shops and other municipal things. So a lot of the electricity has to be transferred from other regions of Iceland.
@lauraalicewatt
@lauraalicewatt 11 месяцев назад
@@AllThingsIceland because transmission is expensive, and the Westfjords can currently only produce about half of its electricity needs, especially in winter (because all our local generation comes from hydropower) - so we must "import" it from the rest of the country.
