We truly apologize for the mistake we made at 4:54. That is *not* the SD card reader - it is actually the magnetic charging port. The SD card reader is visible here 5:10 below the charging port.
That's ok, this is a spectacular video regardless. Great job to Ulrika Hedlund, you have made my buying decision much easier - I will go with the ipad Pro!
I have an i7 256gb surface pro 3, an i5 256gb surface book 1, and a 128gb 2020 ipad pro; I love each device for different reasons--I feel like they all have different uses for me. I'm not rich; I just bough them while I was in school and pursuing my doctorates. At first, I bought the SP3 and used it alone for several years until the touch screen stopped working. Since it was out of warranty, I ended up buying a Surface Book because I was attracted to the appeal of the solid keyboard structure. Although the surface book was an amazing device, I realized shortly after buying it that it was too big at times (I work in hospital and often carry my tablet around when I'm rounding.) Although the Surface Book has great battery life when the keyboard is connected and can be used in tablet mode without the heavy keyboard, the battery when carrying the screen alone was poor (2-3 hours versus >8 hours with the SP3). With that said, after using the SB for almost a year, I eventually ended up biting the bullet and replacing the screen and the battery on the SP3 myself and that became my daily tablet to take on rounds again. Recently, I got the 2020 iPad Pro because I got it for a price that couldn't be beaten since my friend works for Apple and he gets great discounts. With that said, I love the iPad Pro for all the reasons I loved the SP3. The only issue with the iPad, is that its not running a full version of MacOS, so I'm unable to run certain proprietary apps that I need for work which requires either MacOS or Windows--so although the iPad is my new rounding device, I find myself using my SP3 and SB more to do the bulk of my productivity work. In addition, the two Windows 10 devices can pair together easily to have a dual screen setup (the ipad has the feature with macbook as well, but I dont have a macbook). With all of that said, if I could only choose one device, I would take the Surface Pro 3 over all of them, so I could only imagine that SP6 and SP7 are alot better.
Couple of points: Apple Pencil 2 attaches magnetically to the iPad Pro and it will charge from there, and OneNote for iOS does integrate for Meeting Details as well.
Why macbook and ipad? U can just attach the keyboard of the ipad with it! No offence i love the ipad u should actually try cause i had the surface pro but it literally did not work for ME and then i managed to save up money and got the best device for note taking. Its my opinion
I'd add that at least for me the palm rejection on the Pro 6 is much better than on the iPad. It's really the main reason why I stepped away from the iPad personally.
This is a good point to add - and I fully agree. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term palm rejection, it is when you rest your hand on your device and that interferes with your writing.
Great review - I would like to see how your opinion of the IPad as a PC is affected when IOS 13 is released. I’m using mine with a Keyboard and the public beta and it is vastly improved! I’m not a big Onenote user so I dont know what features I’m missing using the iPad version - will search for a link - unless anyone has one?
I just have to say that I fully agree with your conclusion : - the iPad Pro is incomparable regarding the writing experience with the pencil whether in OneNote or any other Notetaking App (many others very powerful on the iPad) - the Surface is on the other side a very good day to day windows computer, but a « mediocre tablet » Conclusion .... I carry both of them :-) Thanks for this real life video Erick
Please come back... you're tutorials were the most helpful on here. First you explain everything, so clearly. You then talk as through it a step by step.
I like this video and i actually requested it a while back. I just wanted to point out that One Note is property of Microsoft and whatever functionality it doesn't have is because of them. If windows had something simple like notability or goodnotes I would take the surface. A pc is a pc and can do way more than closed-minded iOS allows. I don't really care about the camera. On the other hand, poor battery life is my true concern.
6:42 Good news about the desktop version (OneNote 2016) has come out since this video was posted, Microsoft announced they have reconsidered and will continue to support the desktop version at least through the end of the Office 2019 lifecycle (October 2023). And it's getting dark mode! I've also read there may be additional development work done on it, such as upgrading the sync engine, which is slower than the App version of OneNote. Here is the post on the Office 365 blog: techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Office-365-Blog/Your-OneNote/ba-p/954922
I think the latest is that the 2019 desktop OneNote will outlive the W10 App which is a pity as the UWP app is amazing for actually capturing handwritten notes, still MS seem to change their mind weekly on which ON will survive ;) Never really got the fascination with Dark Mode but if they get the new sync engine in the desktop that will make transitioning back to desktop much more palatable (for me a least).
Excellent series of videos, I look forward to the next instalment (the Surface Pro X is due out in November with better battery life, bigger screen and less weight). I use both iPad and Surface Go and prefer the W10 app but the speed at which the iPad fires up makes it a better replacement for paper+pen.
Update - I've got the Pro X and it's amazing for OneNote, The instant on really is instant and the new slim pen feels nice to hold than the older round pen (plus I don't lose the button so easily). I forgot to charge it the other night and still easily managed two days note taking on a single charge.
Celtic Chrys yup, silly mistake by Ulrika but the video doesn't purport to be a review of iPad hardware vs Surface hardware so I was happily to let the mistake go, where the video does shine is in showing usage of the OneNote app on both systems backed up with real world experience.
Did you find it uncomfortable or cumbersome to hold the 12.9" iPad for long periods of time. I'm considering the 12.9 vs the 11" iPad and was wondering about times when I wanted to "hand out" with it in handm
I actually really like the cursor onscreen because it helps me see where exactly I'm writing. I actually find it annoying that the iPad does not show a cursor.
As an Ipad Air user with Apple Pencil gen 2, I do NOT recommend Ipad as OneNote is just behind on the features. Also the Ipad Office 365 apps do not support ink to text and its just a bad experience all around.
I don’t like OneNote cause of the infinity page. I bought iPad cause Goodnotes is the best! I can set to any paper size and when I scan, there’s OCR to recognise every words to search/copy-paste. If Windows has better note taking app than Goodnotes, I’ll consider to buy Surface.
Have both of them, but surface pro has serious battery issue. Never lasts more than 4-5 hrs. For outdoor meetings use ipad pro but when at home use surface simply because it provides more options in desktop version.... Wish Microsoft provides all the features of one note desktop Ver in other ipad versions...
I agree, the desktop version of OneNote still has a lot of rich functionality that's missing in the Win 10 OneNote app. It's really too bad Microsoft are not promoting OneNote more. For instance, in Teams, OneNote isn't the default note taking app for meeting minutes - instead it's a Wiki. There you don't have any of the good stuff that you have in OneNote...
Nice review thanks. Just minor comment. Useful tip on turning off the cursor - found it in the computer's "SETTINGS" on SP4, and not the OneNote APP "SETTINGS" as I found out. Perhaps obvious to most.
I haven't tested the iPad Air 2019, but from what I understand, it doesn't support this new second generation Apple pencil. So you have to use the former pencil that you charge via the lightning port.
Great review. I’m considering this choice now. If I were to use the IPAD pro, how do my notes get synced with my other Office 365 apps? I.e- I have a meeting on my Office calendar and want my OneNote notes to sync with that using iPad Pro? By the way - I already have a Lenovo Yoga w Office 365 for travel and have a Lenovo Thinkpad w docking station for home Office work.
Hi Geoffrey Smith! You can access all your Office 365 apps on the iPad and your notes will automatically sync. Regarding meeting notes, in the OneNote for iPad you still don't have the option to insert Outlook meeting details directly into your notes - you have this in the Windows OneNote app. Just in case you were looking for this specific feature. 😊
Excellent review! I totally agree with your conclusions. IPad pro is definitely better for mobile note-taking and you don't need a full blown One Note functionality for that. Thanks for the great review!
two things i dislike about one note: no night mode and cant record audio and note taking at the same time. i prefer notability for these two specific reasons..
I really wish the Apple Pencil had a soft tip option and you can use the opposite end to erase so you can use the double tap feature for something else. It’s probably the best note taking experience out there.
I really enjoyed your informative video review of these two machines/operating systems when using ONENOTE. However since 2015 the OFFICE LENS app (www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/blog/office-lens-snap/) provides the Surface Pro camera with the same level of functionality as the i-Pad Pro, in that it automatically crops and deskews to a document/whiteboard/business card/image, allows photo editing of that image and then saves it to ONENOTE, Gallery, Word, PowerPoint, PDF applying OCR to some of those options. So long as you have an internet connection you get a similar effect to the i-Pad although the new image in ONENOTE will be created in its own page and not within an existing page as you showed. A similar option to the smaller i-Pad is the Surface Go which provides the functionality needed for your task in a smaller Microsoft package albeit at the mid-range end of the i-Pad family.
I made the above comments when using OneNote 2016 but the newer OneNote app does allow the inserting of photos directly into the page you are working from using the Surface camera utilising a similar format to Office Lens. I also found the same functionality in the OneNote app on my Android phone. I tend to use OneNote 2016 for its greater range of formatting features but since you can have both versions operating simultaneously on your Surface, I could use the App for note taking and capturing lecture whiteboards and then tidy it up in 2016. Or just whip out my phone. Either way no whiteboard is going to escape now!

if you got a laptop or a pc, then buy a ipad! its much easier to use and much smoother than the surface. trust me, you will get trouble with the surface + windows.
