A review of my flight with BA Cityflyer from Gibraltar to London City Airporton an E190. Flight time: 2hr25min Flight: BA3290 Aircraft type: E190SR Aircraft reg: G-LCYZ Aircraft age: 11 years Ticket cost: 20,000 avios miles + £0.50
What’s dangerous. Go arounds are not unusual and are safe.. lounge also makes fresh sandwiches and salads on request at no charge.. Also in Business Class on the E190 it’s a 2-2 configuration and you don’t get an empty seat next to you if the flight is full. ThE only downside of Club Europe on the E190 especially as complimentary catering snd drinks including alcohol is included in Euro Traveller.
You would get bored very quickly! 2, maybe 3 times a day there are a couple of flights, The rest of the time nothing happens, it is a very quiet airport. They open the airport, a couple of planes land and take off, that is it for a few hours until the next "busy" spell.
Nearly crashed at Gib airport in October 1988. Huge turbulence and wind shear on the way in, touched a wing on the runway, wheels finally down halfway along then aborted the landing and flew round avoiding Spanish airspace at the height of the bridges of the ships at anchor trying to gain height on the turn. Finally landed at Faro in Portugal. One of my fellow passengers flew in a refuelling VC10 for the Black Buck raids in the Falklands conflict (which was pretty hairy at times) and even he said that landing was the closest he'd been to considering his destiny.
Use to go to Gibraltar five times a year and at least once, after two aborted landings we had to divert to Malaga, 20 mins in a plane, three hours on a coach back to Gibraltar. It’s is a great experience to land and take off at Gibraltar, and the Rock is a fabulous place to stay and explore
Excellent- brought back memories. I spent two years there mid 1950’s when serving in the RAF. Plenty service aircraft movements -no lounge as you see now but tourists did arrive by BEA in a DC3 (later Vickers Viscount). When strong winds were blowing the pilot would fly from the north at right angles to the runway then do a quick right turn and land. I’m sure the passengers thought that dangerous.
Great shots from the terrace. Pre 1980s most airports had viewing galleries or terraces. Heathrow had a great roof garden with spectacular views of the whole airfield. Even had live commentaries. Such a shame all gone for security reasons. 🙋♂️🇬🇧
Had a week in Gibraltar awhile ago. The rock itself has a nature reserve with cable car to the top and miles of footpaths to explore. There are also tunnels through the rock dating back hundreds of years that are open to the public. At the southern end they have a WW2 Artillery Gun emplacement and from there you can see across to North Africa. The islands museum is also worth a visit. Plenty of good place to eat. Recommended and hope to go back again soon.
Flown in and out many times. Only time I have ever been sick flying was the first time out of Gibraltar. The really sharp right turn at the Mediterranean end whilst climbing. Presumably to avoid Spanish air space. But loved flying in at night and seeing all the fire flies. Good old Gibair operated by Bland.
Whoa! Those two airports in one trip! I've taken off and landed at LCY. Driving to the airport, seeing the angle of the aircraft on approach was something else!
I remember Shackletons and Hawker Hunters regularly flying at Gibraltar when there was a stronger military presence there. There also used to be a service from Gibraltar to somewhere in Africa operated by Gibraltar Airways, using an old Dakota. It's amazing to see how much more reclaimed land there is now within the harbour walls compared to when I lived there.
The Gibair flight was to Tangier, about 15 minutes flying. They used a Viscount when I flew with them. I, too, remember the Hunters and Shackletons, HS Dominies at the weekends and the odd Hercules from time to time.
Great improvement over the old terminal. Used to be a great little airline called GB Airways out of Gib in the 90's. Used to fly them twice a month. Lot of old friends and memories there.
I have many happy memories of Gibraltar; an amazing place. I've experienced many go around there. I've never flown in to LCY, but feel I must give it a go. The approach looks spectacular. Thank you for an excellent video.
Safety depends upon communication between aircraft and control tower. In early 1950’s a Canadian military aircraft with failed radio equipment landed whilst the road was open. It collided with and killed a cyclist who was mid way across.
@@renyoung9735 Seen the photo years ago of the victim's severed head at the local CID offices shown by my late uncle when on a visit. For those with a 'gruesome juice 'em' appeal, the head was severed below the jaw AND vertically from the top of the head straight down behind the ear lobes. obviously cut by the engine's turbine blades. Like a face mask appearance and for extra cringe the next pic was a view taken from behind ugh!!
Great video, why eat a crusty croissant when you can be watching the apron and approaching planes etc. That's the great thing about small airports. In the UK that trip across the runway would have had roadworks and a diversion :D The go around had my lips go dry, luckily I have some Icelandic Air lip salve to hand ..... sorted.
We fly regularly to Gib for R and R but we go from Bristol which is our local airport. The Tempera Prawns at the Lord Nelson in Casemates Square are the best I've ever had.
The Gibraltar Airport is definitely on my list of places to visit. It's so surreal to have a street cross a runway that wide. Awesome video! The view from the sky is breathtaking! 😄👍
There used to be a military rifle range right where the camera is. We did the conversion course from the old lee enfield to the slr ( self loading rifle ) here. Gib was ok for a week or two but any longer and you begin to hate the place.
Thanks mate! Very informative content and the airport/trip was funny! How about your trip to and within Gibraltar? Never been to Gibraltar before. Wish you could post some introduction/content about that later.
Amazing views on takeoff sitting on the right side. Disappointing seeing those blocks of flats under construction just under the Rock, somewhat spoils the scenery and natural look of the rock.
I think it’s called London City as traditionally it was built to serve those who do business in the City and wanted to fly in and out quickly. You’re right though it’s not in the City
What a beautiful island that is down there. I think this Gibraltar airport is way way much better than the scariest and tiniest airport in the world: the Paro International airport in Bhutan of the Himalayas.
Fully laden RAF Nimrods used to still have wheels on the ground when going past the piano keys. Then followed that with a hard climbing banked turn out to sea, they were not allowed in Spanish airspace.
Why is this video titled “most dangerous”? They are not dangerous at all, a challenge yes, but no more dangerous than any other airport around the world.
Not true, the challenging conditions make the possibility of an error that can lead to an accident much higher than in other airports, thus putting these two among the most dangerous in Europe and in the world. Pilos are required to have additional training in order to land at such airports
The video doesn't show the width and length of the landing strip clearly... override by a couple of metres and the plane will be in the sea. Then there's the possibility of human error with the traffic across the runway, I understand there was a close call between a small plane and a car a few years ago
You obviously don't know Gibraltar airport very well then. The main problem landing a plane is the wind coming over the rock, the wind coming over create a vortex, a rolling formation of wind currents. These rolling side winds can change directions suddenly and then the short runway doesn't help either
I love watching your videos, thank you for sharing them but sometimes the subtitles are unreadable because of the white background. Can you do something about it?
Enjoyed your video very much having just returned from four great day on the Rock. Understand that crossing the runway at Gib will soon be a thing of the past with a tunnel under the eastern end of the runway nearing completion.
We enjoyed my 65th birthday on Gibraltar, with a dear friend who passed recently, wonderful experience ,well worth a visit for a short break. Amusing walk across the runway to Spain, will go again soon
I've landed on air strips the size of yard sticks! Depending on the available run way...and what you're flying.. find your stalk speed..fly as slow as you can and put her down at the edge of the run way ...or just go around!!!
Very nice views around Gibraltar and coming into Lindon. You may want to use darker letters because the letters blend into the background view sometimes. Great recording! I enjoyed your video very much.
They only make two attempts to land after which they divert to Malaga. FA told me after two attempts some passengers become very nervous. My first time to Gibraltar included an aborted attempt. A strong wind just lifted the plane.
Gibraltar Airport IS NOT the border between Gibraltar and Spain, that's approximately 500 metres north. It is not a dangerous airport either. Might be a bit scary for some passengers.
Nice video, poor title ... you missed out the word SHOCKING (in upper case of course) alongside the MOST DANGEROUS. Gib is one of the best places to learn to sail yachts: sun and strong winds!
Challenging airports yes, of course and they recieve extra training for specific airports such as these but dangerous? no. Driving to the airport is the more "dangerous" part of any journey.
Not exactly impressed by the service on that flight. Was the one and only main course option in Club Europe really a vegetarian mushroom and potato dish? It looks horrible to be honest. Have Club Europe standards now dropped so low that after dinner coffee is served in a paper cup? Wasn't impressed by the toilet at the rear being out of use either. The result was presumably a long queue of Economy passengers in the Club Europe cabin waiting to use the single available toilet.
