On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

We've seen him win with inferior aircraft, seen amazing recoveries that are turned around into victory, seen him start in losing position with every advantage to his adversary and yet prevail! @@imadrifter does it help if neither pilot can feel it? The viper can pull higher Gs than the tomcat can, so that pilot has a bigger advantage by not being able to feel it

I always love your Tomcat fights and I'm glad you brought the 'B' this time. I always thought it was a real equalized with the F-16 and F-18 if you know what you're doing. Looking forward to more VR fights. I expect those will gradually take over in the coming years as VR quality improves.

"...I'm just the giant tennis court..." The description that comes to mind is "Aluminum Cloud"... It's a term I've heard USAF pilots use to refer to both the F-14 and the F-15... First Round: I can't believe you missed that shot either... That was like throwing away the winning lottery ticket! Once again, another beautiful demonstration of how the Tomcat is still a contender....

You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting. Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements. Also make it bandit unknown so you have to choose your jet carefully.

Quick tip for the Tomcat: When you are in a slow speed high AOA position reverse your roll inputs. It will feel a little bit slow but it will make you do some awesome maneuvers.

DFS the fun is the knife fight in a phone booth. In training the real drivers do the same thing, merge and fights on. Now in a real conflict, there would be AWACS, and every effort made to make the fight unfair as possible and eliminate as much of the OpFor even before they knew there was a fight.

“No matter how big your airplane is, if it dosent have wings, it can’t fly.” 1980s Israeli F-15 Eagle: “Hold my beer” If you didn’t know, in the 80s an Israeli F-15 2 seater collided mid air with an A-4. In the collision, the F-15 lost its right wing. The pilot miraculously managed to control the aircraft all the way to a high speed landing at the air base 10 miles away (snapping off the emergency tail hook in the process) It turns out the wide fuselage provided 60% of the lift to keep it flying. That combined with a higher speed kept the aircraft controllable. Oh and if you’re wondering, the A-4 pilot ejected and was fine.

I think its more accurate to say the F16 is "mediocre" in the one circle compared to "some" of its contemporaries. Like in comparison to the F-18, and russian front line stuff circa mid/late 80's? Yeah... the Viper is at a disadvantage in the one circle. But then again, the F18, Mig29 and SU27 are absolute MONSTERS in a one circle... and they were all designed with instantaneous turn and high AOA in mind. The F16 wasn't - the F16 was designed with the OTHER side of the coin in mind - energy retention and sustained turn rate - its a testament to just how brilliant the design of the little fucker is that its THAT good even in a one circle... and it can haul bombs, and makes a dandy litte SEAD platform. Seriously - if i had to name the "BEST" all rounder combat aircraft since the dawn of the jet age? I think I'd have to give it to the F16.

In such competitions, the fight doesn't start until the merge.... It's like the opening bell in a boxing match, you don't expect fighters to be swinging before the bell and neither should you be expecting a shot before the merge

Shooting the guy acouple miles out I really don't think is gunna affect your turn all that much ha ha.... If this were in fact a real legit combat dogfight you can bet your ass that either pilot would seize any opportunity to dispatch their foe merge or no merge

Great hop. For this episode specifically I wish you guys would've used the debrief version that uses the blue and red "trails" that delineate your previous flight paths. I don't know what it's called but you know what I mean. It would've been especially helpful to understand how the viper took the tomcats six towards the end of round 1. It looked like the viper was hovering, which obviously...

If complexity is holding you back on it don’t let it. Multi crew really helps and jester is pretty intuitive. You can have him do most of the work and point and shoot and do the fun stuff.

It can be a fun plane to fly and always a blast to do so. but is a particularly complex one fly and the avionics leave much to ve desired. Honestly as a Viper main i almost never touch the tomcat even prefer the hornet.

It's absolutely amazing and not even that complex to fly, I'd guess you won't regret it. It has lots of raw power, really good air to ground and short range A/A modes. It is best compared to a classic muscle car, lots of power, but you can just cruise along with it. If you want to get the last 10% out of it, that's a whole different task entirely, she'll try to kill you. Also it is a better multi-role fighter than most people give it credit for, It can comfortably go supersonic with 2 x gbu-16 with LANTIRN, two Phoenix, two Sidewinder and one Sparrow.

After that miss, you should have just went home and parked it. By far the best fights yet. There is just something so cool about seeing the Viper come head on contrails rolling. Only as you shoot straight up and look down onto him and continue to see his contrails. Next thing you know he's in a slow in a toilet bowl, flying all around your cockpit. The visuals on these fights were the best. Whoever flew that Viper flew the wings off of it. You're just really good at making the Tomcat give you everything you want.

Played a air combat simulator called aces high from 99-15. In duels, was always guns cold first mirge. After that, HO is fine, but not point to a "duel" if there is no duel in the first place.

Another possible reason for not shooting prior to the merge would be to avoid flying into a rapidly expanding cloud of debris and FOD-ing your engines. Then again, it certainly didn't stop that MiG-29 driver from shooting you in the face with R-73's several times in a row (was that six or seven times?) when you tackled him in an F-5-E.😉 As I recall, he was more than far enough off your nose to easily avoid the debris cloud. Mind you, once you eliminated the R-73's, the F-5-E acquitted itself very well against the Fulcrum, despite the generational difference.😁 (That's still one of my favourite videos, as I'm a huge fan of the F-5-E/F.)

Dogfighting is still taught because dogfighting still happens in combat. With modern missiles and modern radars to both find and target, dogfighting should be rare. The goal is to use missiles from distance to take planes down. If you get to a merge and a dogfight, you have failed at your mission to uses missiles from distance to take down planes. But you can still win the fight if you know how to dogfight well.

theres a new podcast interview with a f14 pilot who said they were pulling circuit breakers and doing all kinds of things before a BFM. flying with cautions into a battle but it was the way to go. not sure if you can in dcs but a way worth exploring

Should also note that head on attacks lead to mutual destruction quite often due to close proximity. Happened to a pair of T-45s where I live. So it's not in the combatants best interest.

I thought that the merge also loosely used to have something to do with a sign of "honour" / "respect" when duelling in this manor while making it a "level" playing field at the start which as you stated then becomes the role of both plane and pilot.
