This video describes how to prepare for and self-administer a hydrogen breath test, which can reveal the presence of bacteria in the small intestine. Dr. Jasmine Zia gives guidance.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! I am doing the breath test right now and the only thing that threw me off was how the video hints that one should be able to actually SEE their breath in the tube. That made me think I had done something wrong until I called the lab
Thank you for the very well done & informative video. QUESTIONS to follow are many false negatives/positives. Your thoughts on taking probiotic supplements and that causing errors? :The hydrogen breath test depends on the presence of hydrogen producing bacteria. However, a considerable proportion of non‐hydrogen producing bacteria, which can yield false negative results, has been observed in some12,16,17 but not all studies.18,19,20 Several other potential sources of error exist, such as carbohydrate malabsorption in chronic pancreatitis and coeliac disease, with false positive tests for SIBO due to colonic fermentation and gas production,20,21,22,23 and gastrointestinal motor disorders, where delayed gastric emptying may cause false negative tests24 and rapid transit through the small bowel will produce false positive breath tests.22,25,26,27 False positive results may also be due to the oral bacterial flora and if the subject has failed to adhere to a low fibre diet the day before the test.
Can I PLEASE get one of these doctors? The other Doctor I had at the UW said it was only Ibs... luckily my PCP at roosevelt found it was Sibo and Cdiff.
Would have been good to know if you could put another breathe in the vial. Like when the guy messed up in his first try. I didn't get a practice vial and messed up my first one and am not sure if I should put another breathe in.
The test kit says don’t do it if you have runny diarrhoea 14 days prior to the test....but that is my main symptom, so I can never take the test! Any advice?
I’m probably way too late for this comment but in case anyone else is wondering I’m about to do mine and I believe it’s just glucose not lactulose, so there is at least one other option
I forgot I have my hydrogen breath test tomorrow (hospital booked). I ate a turkey wrap and had a cold milk coffee drink. It’s 20 hours between when I ate and when my test begins, would that mess with my results? I meet the other 14 and 7 day requirements okay.
with 10 samples at 15 minute increments, this should take 2.5 hours not 3. Im doing it right now and the confusion around that is giving me anxiety. can someone explain the math to me?
Can you drink apple juice 2 hours before your breath test for fructose? My doctor is saying I can, but this feels inaccurate. Someone, please advise. 🙏🏻
Erik, I encourage you to contact me. I can help to drastically alleviate/eliminate your acid reflux and/or likely any other gastrointestinal issues you may be experiencing if you would at all be interested in scheduling a phone consultation.
I had NO SAMPLE test tube in my kit for practice. I'm in the process of doing this test and so FRUSTRATED!!! No one answers the phone numbers provided because I'm doing this on a Sunday morning. The needle that goes in the test tube is covered with a rubber sheath. NO WHERE is anything mentioned about removing this sheath, so I haven't. But, I see nothing in the two tubes I've blown into, unlike the guy in the video who says, "I can see my breath in there!" I'm so frustrated right now because I think I'm doing this test wrong even though I'm following the very POOR INSTRUCTIONS sent to me in this kit! ARGH!!
the needle is covered in my test kit as well and i also didn't see any condensation in the test tube from the practice test. i'm all prepped and ready to take the test and now I need to wait for an answer. :(
I'm guessing it's not a "needle" but a dowel to open the test kit door-opening. it must have a hole on the side somewhere to allow air to pass through the soft 'needle'. I practice without a test tube in the side slot and i could feel air comping out the side (so hopefully it's getting into the test tube).
I think the new tubes have a "door" at the opening that gets cracked open by the rubber plunger on the part with the bad, versus having a needle that perforates the "door" of the tube.
Wow soundscomplicated and time consuming. Might be a good opportunity to getting launched on one of those literary classics which "everyone should have read" but you havent such as "War and Peace" or "Hundred Years of Solitude" haha
