During my visit to our friends ‪@AudioAdvice‬ , they had a brand new Denon AVR-A1H receiver with the top removed and I just couldn't resist shooting a video with my friend Nick Rich. This new 70lbs 15-channel AVR-A1H ($6,499) bad boy is the brand’s first to incorporate Dirac Live. The AVR-A1H is rated at 150wpc x 15CH into 8 ohms and is capable of delivering 105wpc x 9CH driven thanks to its massive heatsinks, large 25lbs power supply and 33,000uF x 2 capacitor bank. The AVR-A1H has 4 independent subwoofer outputs and advanced bass redirection features. We give some insights into the build quality, power supply and power capability, and about the advanced bass management features from what we discovered at our recent trip to Denon's headquarters. we also discuss it's advanced HDMI platform making it the ideal AVR for serious gamers. A formal review is forthcoming with full bench test reports and an Audyssey vs Dirac comparison.

That last comment "Yamaha, hello?, Onkyo, hello?" is exactly why I'm getting the A1H. Not to mention a Yamaha once failed on me for no visible reason... While Denon, even a low end one worked for over 12 years no issues. Previous gen Denon 4700H was very impressive too. Can't wait to test the A1H myself.

And I have a Yamaha Rxv763 from 2012 and still going strong, looking to replace it though due to no Atmos and 2.1. I also had a Denon where the volume fail. Yes, the amp section in this is great, but the Yamaha a8a internal dac and processing is better quality. £7k for a Denon? Nah mate.

I own both the Denon AVR x8500HA and the Marantz SR8015 and I'm very happy with their overall performance of these receivers. The Denon performs better on the home theater vs the Marantz. I just wonder how much better is A1H vs 8500HA? I think its not by much because the 8500HA is a pretty dynamic receiver in its own right. I never really understood how to run a Denon AVR until I learned how to tweak it and what difference it made on home theater & music performance. Yes! I'm a Denon believer.

Now that’s a beautiful machine, I really love the way he presented that 5 channels are set and the rest are assignable. With 15 channels to play with I’m quite happy. I was under the impression that toroids offer more power capacity and efficiency for their size relative to E cores. I suppose they know what they’re doing ha ha. But ya know I see a few little compromises here and there and I suspect there’s still something else in the pipeline that has more of a no holds barred cost no object approach. This model seems very sensibly balanced for exceptionally high performance. Which is great! Although such balancing seems like it could of been a bit more generous with the price, or a bit more ambitious with the budget.

*** NOTE*** If you want a TOP TIER Analog to HDMI converter that just works, pick up the $300 RetroTink 5X Pro. 1440p 60hz with 1-8ms of input lag which depending on the settings. It has a load of features, and the creator keeps adding more. I use it with my LG C1 and it looks amazing. I’m really pleased to see the Auro support, demo discs aside there are some really good movies in Auro 3D. Avengers Endgame for example which for my tastes was a fantastic cinematic experience. I love all those marvel movies. But anyway to save people the trouble of looking it up, here’s some notable others in Auro 3D John Wick The Hunger Games American Sniper Elysium Ghostbusters Warcraft The Great Wall Solo: a starwars story Pacific Rim Uprising Jurassic World: fallen kingdom Black Panther Tomb Raider Ready Player 1 Antman and the wasp Mission Impossible fallout Avengers End Game Minions Penguins of Madagascar Turbo Ice Age: collision course Kung Fu Panda 3 Trolls It’s sad that the industry conditions create an environment where format options are reduced into a single published disc or tape, in a winner-takes all struggle for survival. I don’t know if the economics allows for any other model, but I feel as we get more Ai transformations, and more digital releases at full high res bandwidth. The era of having to choose one format over another may fade away, and simply be a user toggled option. Leaving only the physical layout as the point of consideration, and maybe not even that.

Not having composite is just madness. It’s just simply a matter of compatibility. What next? Will our electronics not be able to play music that isn’t music videos? Are we going to lose the ability to play individual tracks and albums because of streaming music ai generated mixes. Why not just abandon all analogue inputs. Make the whole thing a subscription model that you rent like some kind of modem. How about we just make things that work with the things that exist. And notice he said 40gbps not 48, they’re not even fully cutting edge and they’re letting go of legacy support. Why not make better legacy support with some cool upscalers. Something that can adaptively detect what recording technology was used and properly give it the right EQ because mastering changes decade to decade, country to country, and even studio to studio. When the tone controls are burried in a menu, an automatic system that can bridge old recordings into the modern sonic mixing standards would be incredibly valuable. Great for expanding the dynamic range of compressed 2000’s era, or properly relating shutterspeed/audio speed of the black and white era, or giving 1990’s LFE tracks the proper bump in volume that modern LFE has. Or just yank rca out of it for a few bucks cost saving, and then still charge ferrari margins.
@SwirlingDragonMist
@SwirlingDragonMist Год назад
It does have those balanced two channel inputs that are nice. But the role of a “receiver” is to receive all the inputs. It’s a junction box. Of all the devices to get to make legacy stuff work with the display, it’s the receivers job to provide the switching and the inputs and the scaling. The video scaling is better done there to help keep the audio/video in sync. If it gets passed through for the display to scale then it can lag and loose it’s timing sync.

These are now used for $4,400 plus $800 for multi-sub DLBC. $5,200 for this much value? That's a friggin steal. Also, the Auromatic upmixer will get an enormous amount of use during daily viewing since it's the superior upmixer. There's still an overwhelming amount of streaming content and internet tv (RU-vid TV) that's running PCM (or lossy multi-channel) instead of any sort of Dolby or DTS lossy multi-channel mix. Not to mention that you could hook up you flashy dac, route to the XLR's on this unit, and use Auromatic to upmix all of your hi-res content. @@Audioholics A good point to make thank you. I think I chose a poor example to express my point. There is space for an entire debate regarding what is objectively important or not in the ASR reviews on gear; where I think it is relevant is measuring functional claims and specifications, adherence to standards for voltages etc. Things that actually matter audibly.... AND examinations that create a level of accountability in Manufacturers who for too long were happy to pursue "average" as a functional outcome. Examinations of objective precision, others less objective - such as Component selection, layout methodology, features, functional examination/ ease of use etc to gain an appreciation and level of confidence in what you have on the table.

Digital technology implemented in top-of-the-line, in flagships AV processors (of different mass producers like the ones of the top 3 in the world - Denon, Marantz, Yamaha) has to be like flagships, top-of-the-line smartphone producers (Huawei, Xiaomi, Samsung, Apple, Honor). Because in digital tech, what is flagship component today, will become obsolete in just a year or two... This is why in 2023, I don't want to buy old, obsolete technology at an unjustified cost! Only the newest and best-performing components has to be used and I don't see this in AV10 or in the Denon AVR A1H... In regarding only to the audio side of the Marantz AV10... My level of expectations at 7000 USD (or even more) is that I need one AV unit to sound like a flagship stereo, on ALL channels... BTW... Be honest... who is using 15 channels configuration in a living room? Or kilometers of wires for zone 2 or zone 3 connections in which the end result is to play same music, instead of separate very good quality audio components in those rooms? We are not talking about hearing the same music in corridors or on an elevator of a hotel, because who really wants this? Sabre DAC ES 9018 used inside AV10? Why not at least ESS 9039Pro or AKM4191EQ? Or a dedicated very low noise stereo DAC in dual differential mode per each channel? As a top-of-the-line product in 2023, it should have! And where is HDCD decoding? Audiophile CD format is not dead, SACD is not dead, Dolby Digital is not dead... Even vinyl is not dead, and in 2023 we still not having a decent phono preamplifier for both MM and MC cartridges in a top-of-the-line AV processor... In the audiophile community, we are still spinning HDCD CDs, SACD discs, DVD Audio discs - and for HDCD, we need that decoder. Also...we are in 2023, right? ...where is streaming and decoding native DSD1024 audio files? I want to see ultra-low noise separate power supplies inside of a top of the line AV processor... This is the level of quality that I expect from a Marantz or Denon AV processor flagship, in 2023. RCA connectors are made from gold-plated brass? This is NOT desirable, because of brass low conductivity. It should be made at least from silver or gold-plated OFC copper (again... I'm modest...I'm not mentioning pure silver-made connectors...). I want to see OCC pure copper or OCC pure silver wires used in inside cabling! Talking further...what OP-AMP are used inside? No info here... Also, no info regarding SINAD with EQ in flat mode at max output volume. I want an upscaler even from DVD definition, to 4k and 8k resolution! Also, who is really using HEOS?? Especially in this high-end area... McIntosh is having same marketing policy... No detailed info in regarding inside components used, and no tech info regarding very important audio performance in their top-of-the-line AV processor... Only high prices! With all due respect for these companies, this is not acceptable.

Why buy this for $6,500 when you could buy 3 AVR for 2,000 and have triple the channel output? I'd just get three 7.2 AVR. I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to home amps. Why would you need that many channels from a single AVR? I have a Harman Kardon 7.2, 200 watt's per channel and two SVS 13" subs. Not sure what I would need the extra channels for. For $6,500 I'd rather it ran on a 220. If you can afford the receiver you can afford a bit of Romex and an outlet. Could run it from the dryer breaker. Will they ever have that option? @@oldb3139 Thanks for your advice! I'm speaking more to the "voicing" of brands. Marantz for example are considered "warmer" than Denon. I think this is a different "thing" to what you are speaking on with EQ? In regard to soundstage how would you use the EQ to make it more expansive? That would be a lovely bit of advice :). I'm using an Anthem AVM70 just now and trying to compare it to the Denon. I own Denon x4700 and am now using 5.1.4 with 2 subwoofers. I'm using top speakers on height-setting, which gives me Atmos, DTS:X and Auro. Still, I read that Atmos users lose certain sounds with this configuration, from the top speakers. Is this true? Frankly, I'm not really using Auro for about anything, and I would say that Atmos is the most important thing. I think a proper test about these "missing Atmos sounds" is in order, and I think it would be a good match to Audioholics expertise... Coming to a grand total of 2,650 watts, ypu would need at least a 25 Amp breaker at 120v to feed it, considering the rated power consumption is only 900 watts and the two front channels put out 150w rms 2 channels drivin that would be already 33.3 percent of it's rated power consumption.... Not accounting for thermal dissipation.... For 6k, this act SHOULD DO 150w rms from 20hz to 20khz all channels pushed right below clipping and be able to sustain that playing a 20hz sinewave out of all channels....
