At the 2024 Toyota Tacoma first drive event, I had the opportunity to sample the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road with the six speed manual on the off-road course that Toyota provided as well as drive it in the hills of Malibu in the wet. This might be the best new version of the Toyota Tacoma, mainly because it has nearly TRD Pro levels of capability with the new disconnecting front sway bar, Multi-terrain select modes, and enormous Multi-terrain monitor system. (I've seen people mocking the gigantic 14 inch touch screen in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma because it DOES look huge in the smaller truck, but once you go off=roading and see all around your Tacoma in crystal clear resolution on a screen that big, you will fear no invisible rocks ever again.) Having never driven an off-road manual transmission equipped vehicle before, but being a big fan of manuals, I had a BLAST taking the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma through the course while rowing my own gears, and the transmission is pretty solid for a truck. But where the TRD Off-road REALLY makes a case for itself is on the pavement because the Bilstein shocks are comfortable, the new coil spring rear suspension is planted, and the Tacoma TRD Off=road is just generally easier to live with. While the new Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter are getting all of the headlines, the Tacoma TRD Off-road might be the best of the bunch. You can pick one up and save a little cash for the mods you want to get. But don't listen to me. I still really want that Tacoma Trailhunter in Bronze Oxide!

Glad to see a truck like this doing what it’s actually supposed to do!!!! Unfortunately, most people who own these trucks almost never take them off-road

Most pickup trucks in general don’t do much truck stuff. This one absolutely can off owners are willing to test it. 👍🏻

@@jax1079 Turbo scares me, so I might get cold feet. We will see. Either way, a 2K or more under MSRP manual Gen 3 or a new Gen 4. Got to be a Tacoma. Can't stand the Gen 3 interior even back when it came out in 2016, but it's damn reliable. Should have just given us the Nissan 3.8L V6 in the new Tacoma instead.

Great review! How was your head room with the sunroof? Did your seat have to be all the way down? I am thinking of a TRD ORP but would love it without a sunroof. Don't know if that's possible. Just want the most head room and also not into sunroofs. Overall looks like a great trim grade.

I had no trouble fitting at 6’6”, and that’s also with minimal seat fiddling. Often on these press events we’re swapping drivers so much that I don’t have time to get the seat exactly where I would have it as an owner. (That’s why I look a little cramped in the off-road driving because Isaac is over half a foot shorter than me.) Not totally sure about the sunroof, but I think it’s tied to a premium package. Hope that helps! It’s probably my favorite all around truck of the bunch so far.

@@jax1079 Thanks for your comment and observations about about the seating position. It was looking like all journalists over 6' were a little crammed. Better than last gen. for sure though. I figured you'd know best since you are the tallest I know of. I'm 6'3'' with a kind of Lon torso. If it's similar to a 5th gen. 4R without sunroof it will work for me. I look forward to when you have more time with the finished truck and we get to see more true option packaging. Great video! Looks like you all had a fun time. I appreciate the info.

@@gregjoubert5118 No problamo! And if you’re like me, you can always just lay the seat back like you’re in a low rider 😂

It seems like the cameras kept cutting off in the truck periodically. Was that based on vehicle speed? Will I be able to keep the vehicle cameras on screen 100% of the time whils off roading?
@jax1079
@jax1079 10 месяцев назад
Correct. It is based on vehicle speed. They are always on at lower speeds because it assumes that is when you need them most. I believe you can manually toggle them as needed and they’ll stay on, but even if they don’t they’re a button press away.
