*****
Big fiberglass repairs have been one of those jobs that has just always scared us. It's not something we've had to tackle often so perhaps it was the fear of the unknown or fear of screwing something up worse than it was before.
But... you can only put off learning something for so long!
As part of our ongoing refit, Amy tackles a big project in the shower. She has to remove a shower cubby, make a fiberglass backing plate to fill in the hole, add fiberglass layers, smooth out fairing compound and color match the gelcoat. Talk about jumping in the deep end!
A HUGE thanks to Total Boat for helping us out with all the supplies and Andy with BoatworksToday for the inspiration!

Amy, you definitely overworked that project. Has the thought of a picture or mirror crossed your mind and boom-bada-bing you're done! LOL You could have a picture gallery on your boat that would rival The Metropolitan Art Gallery. The sky's the limit.

😆 If it wasn't in the shower, we'd be much happier finding an 'easier' solution!

Just a thought. When filling a panel as in the video, you can use small flat head wood screws to hold the filler piece in place. #2 x 3/8 screws would work fine here (m1 or m2 if you can find them). It is easy to countersink a small flat head. Then you just glass over them.

Great video- thanks! I am exhausted just watching the video so it must have been even tougher actually doing it! Great job.

Nice, I am glad you were able to get it done. It can be scary initially doing fiberglass, but it's doable, yet messy.

What a great video! I have a few dings in non-critical areas that I "may" attempt to repair after seeing this video. One question...could you have used epoxy rather than the polyester product? Thanks for your refit videos as they've given good, clear explanations.

Fantastic video! I appreciated the level of detail. It does look difficult.

It was difficult in that we were learning as we went. The physical steps weren't that bad, other than sanding of course! Oh and matching gelcoat colors can be a real pain!

Awesome refit video, you guys ever checked the condition of your bulkheads? Are they glued or glassed in?

Thanks Amy and Dave! Definitely my next skill to learn. What temperature range was it when the gel coat catalyst in the amount recommended was added so that Total thought you had added too much.

Fiberglass/gelcoat is a very worthwhile skill! We should have forced ourselves to try a lot earlier! It was perhaps in the low 80's (28ish C) so it wasn't _too_ hot. But it's tough to know which issue actually led to the problem.

Have you not just lost access to your shower faucet connections by closing that panel?
@OutChasingStars
@OutChasingStars Год назад
Haha, you have a good eye! Yes, we did lose access by glassing in that panel, but we can add access on the backside of that 'wall' which won't be constantly getting wet in the shower.
