Been looking forward to hearing how fast it goes, how much power it drains from the batteries, its range on the one Tesla module, and how well those model airplane propellers worked. Were those the original trolling motor props I saw in the brief moment the motor was visible? Hope the next boat video is more like your other ones. The boat seemed to go fast enough to enjoy the weekend well enough. What if you wanted to go camping and put some solar panels as a sun-shade, how far could you go each day? The idea of a tiny-house or camper on the water that doesn't use gasoline and can move from place to place for free is intriguing. Do you think that sort of thing is affordable to an ordinary person?

Nine Hundred Dollar Luxury Yacht Hey, great ideas, I don’t know if this builds on your thoughts but I was imagining it would be possible to build a mast for a sale where a single mast emerges from the hull which can swivel on a bearing, a meter or so up it would fork into 2 and continue up to its regular height where a sale with solar cells are printed and can be turned 90 degrees perpendicular to the water so it can collect energy while the boat isn’t running, it could assist while running as a regular wind sale which would still collect a little energy while running especially at the beginning and end of the. Day while the sun is low in the sky so hitting the sale with a high incidence angle (hopefully correct term).The sale is suspended between the 2 forks btw. I think it would be tricky to engineer a lightweight mast capable of holding onto the sale in higher winds when its looking directly up at the sky behaving like a wing but it seems this could be quite easily automated to sense stress and reef itself, mechanisms for doing that have existed for decades, just not automated. If motors were built in though it would be also possible to track the sun as it moves across the sky for maximum efficiency which would be needed because the solar tech that is printable isn’t very efficient I don’t think???? Anyway, just a thought. :D

Soo...half the height of the pontoons , most of the time 2/3 was above the water. Next step one actually Tesla motor at the front of the platform and a large driveshaft backwards, like in Thailand. Now put arduino controlled hydrofoils on it. One in the back and two in the front for better cornering at high speed. I just had to say it. A lovely silent boat at low speeds and a beast at high speeds...still economical at power consumption.

A few questions: What was the wattage of the motors? What was the top speed? How long did you run the motors and how much power did you use? What did you notice while underway? What would you have done differently? What I noticed: There was constructive interference between the hulls. Extra buoyancy forward caused significant aft trim. You seemed to have designed this with aerodynamic principles in mind, which makes sense, but in practice with displacement hulls you want the finer section of the hull forward, kind of opposite of the optimum aerodynamic shape. This allows for better wave piercing as well as creating a smaller bow wave, which would help reduce the constructive interference and decrease the amplitude of the bow wave.

I see a design-flaw: that boat doesn't seem to require a person to be on it to propel itself. So if you drive it and fall off, it will end up driving itself away from you forevermore. Should either have some kind of (low-effort) lever that has to be held down, some kind of sensor for if a person is on it (could even be some kind of waterproof wireless identification chip), or (the annoying way) a short timer that requires constant resets (so it will drive away from you, but not further than maybe 1 minute of boat-travel)
@feha92
@feha92 3 года назад
I suppose it is also a shame that they didn't add a platform low enough to dangle your legs in the water, could have had one behind and infront of the main one (also helps when getting coke, I guess). Cause it is quite nice to do. And might include a short ladder to get up easier when swimming. Also feels like padding might improve the boat a lot. Not padding it in its entirety of course, just enough to have comfortable resting positions, both lying down and sitting (the latter would prolly use the lower platforms, so you get a backrest in the form of the upper platform + padding).

@feha92

@@jc5445 Good idea you came up with! A wire that disconnects when subjected to force should be a much more reliable system than some wireless token that could kill the boat any time it loses connection, or could easily accidentally be forgotten at home. I’ve thought that so many times. I’m glad to see someone else is with me. All those modern sensors like giros, accelerometers magnetometers and insane processing power on a tablet could and should be used to make a drive by wire system where you give a command for an action to happen rather than turning a wheel for example until you are at the right angle, why not have the sensors doing that stuff accurately now its all so inexpensive. In fact its so inexpensive you could afford multiple sensor sets at each extreme of the boat, mix in GPS etc and the tablet could handle everything including prop trim, power management, everything could be automated, even multiple hydrofoils at front and back for example, maybe stability control. Anything and everything. Lol.

@@oscarohn Ultimate goal is highest top speed on a budget built, low powered, say sub 200 pound electric craft. Most likely trolley motor powered with APC RC airplane propellers as I believe they are the most efficient (diameter and pitch TBD). At least that's what I'm trying to figure out personally... Any knowledgeable feedback on idea hull design... planing, displacement, catamaran, other, etc (besides hydrofoil... for now)... would be greatly appreciated! Cheers

@@AtimatikArmy think i would recomend flat or allmost flat bortom monohull. Easy to build with flat panel design. Does not handle waves as well as other designs, but it is sufficient for many applications. And it is fast. We built a 3 meter flat bottom from 3mm aluminum, did 13knots on a 6hp mercury

That is an awesome little craft. The only thing I would love to see on something like this (as well as every bloody electric or hybrid electric car) is all upward and even sloping surfaces covered in solar paneling. With the cars they could be recharged while your driving and especially parked while at work or anywhere during the day and save heaps on how often the engine has to cut in to recharge. In the case of this boat it would ideally mean extending the deck area but, it would somewhat reduce the current drain on the batteries and any time spent stopped or just drifting it would be actually topping the battery back up. I'm actually curious how fast something like about 1 kw of solar paneling alone could keep this motoring along at with just 1 person on board. I do find it hard to believe you could build a neat bit of water traveling gear like this and not even be using it regularly, that's almost criminal.
@SilmarilS79
@SilmarilS79 3 года назад
Do you know the size a solar panel should be to produce 1Kw confortably.... Quite bigger than the surface of the roof of a car!
@lorditsprobingtime6668
@lorditsprobingtime6668 3 года назад
@@SilmarilS79 Actually when you take the bonnet and boot into the equation you'd do that easily. Besides, who gives a shit about a precise "1 Kw? Any power from solar would help save wasting fuel starting the engine like the silly little Toyota ones do. I don't give a shit if it's only a few hundred watts, it's STILL going to save you on fuel or power on your home bill. Did you somehow ignorantly miss the part where I said " all upward and even sloping surfaces covered in solar paneling."? I NEVER said just the roof genius.
@AtimatikArmy
@AtimatikArmy 3 года назад
Even if it just trickle charged the batteries, it would help.
@lorditsprobingtime6668
@lorditsprobingtime6668 3 года назад
@@AtimatikArmy Exactly! I couldn't think of the name before but those Toyota Prius cars were the main ones I was thinking of. They have improved since first release, the original ones you couldn't even plug them in at home to top up the batteries, it was ALL down to wasting fuel running the puny engine to generate power which I think was just plain bloody stupid. Now you can at least do that but if the upward facing areas all were covered in solar paneling it could put a lot of power back in during a work day if parked in the sun and depending on how far away work is may never need to start the petrol engine during a working week. I think it's criminally stupid not to take advantage of all that wasted energy. It's even going to probably be putting more in than you're using driving home on a sunny afternoon if you were stuck in stop start traffic and at worst is going to still reduce the drain by subsidizing it while driving anywhere during daylight hours. The simple fact they never thought to take advantage of solar on the Prius from the very first model tells me they're not taking them seriously as an electric hybrid car. Assuming a 1 Kw solar array a normal working day under ideal conditions for an 8 hour day should produce up to around 7 Kw hours which is a pretty substantial amount of power to drive home on. Johnny winger up there can keep paying for extra fuel, I'll go with something that actually makes some sense. I still can't believe an idiot would chime in with some bullshit poorly thought out comment like that, especially since I made sure to mention "ALL upward and even sloping surfaces " and stated that very clearly. I'm actually curious how fast something like about 1 kw of solar paneling alone could keep this motoring along.", I never said anything about a pissy little roof panel on a car producing 1 Kw EVER. The fact is though that if you did cover ALL those surfaces I mentioned I'm pretty sure you'd be in the ball park for that much power, maybe more. There's always got to be at least 1 whinger in the crowd.

That means it must be two or three since we were promised a follow-up on magnetohydrodynamics in a couple of weeks! I keep hoping to see that used as a boat engine, alongside the hydrofoils.

What an ignorant comment. I don't even understand how the concept of referring to their skin colour would have anything whatsoever to do with the science. I'm talking to you about this *outside* of the subject, objectively. I'm not conscious of there being any validity to any reference to the tonality of one's outer epidemic layers being in any way logically connected to anything whatsoever. Congratulations, you've allowed yourself to be programmed. I don't mean this in a rude way to you, society is brainwashed, almost everyone is subconsciously programmed to be thinking, somehow, no matter how ridiculously, about the tone of skin. I just don't get it, why would it even be "a thing"? Don't allow your time to be wasted discussing such faux "intellectual" BS - step back, mentally & rationally detach yourself from any reference to anything related to skin tone even being inside your minds awareness, I mean LITERALLY mentally erase it, as you just waste people's time.
