Mike, the train station in Halifax is connected to the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel, where we stayed on our last visit. Directly behind the hotel is Pier 21, which is Canada's Ellis Island. More than a million immigrants got off the boat there to set foot in Canada for the first time. And they could literally walk to the train that would take them to Montreal, Toronto, and all points west in their new country. Halifax has the most amazing history!

Little history on Windsor Junction. The tracks you pointed out was actually the CN dartmouth subdivision. The tracks that go to Windsor are long abandoned. Those tracks were called The WHRC (Windsor and Hansport Railway company) and used to run gypsum trains for the CN trains to pick up at windsor junction.
@colindewolfe3647
@colindewolfe3647 2 года назад
I could see your confusion. The visible track at 16:03 is the start of the Dartmouth subdivision, but then she points to the other side of the car to say that's the track to Windsor. It's still there, it's just that the switch which gives you access to the wye has been yanked with the eastern side of the wye. I drive past it every day.

I loved this. In 2019, my wife and I drove from Wisconsin (entering via Sault Ste Marie) to Cape Breton for a Celtic Music Festival. If you've never been to that, Mike, put that on your bucket list. We stopped in Montreal and had our first poutine. We stopped in New Brunswick in Moncton. (I hope you visit "Magnetic Hill"). We found a cidery in Nova Scotia, and a choclatier in a town called Appleton (which is our hometown in Wisconsin). We've now been in every Canadian Province that touches the US. Can't wait to come back. And looking forward to more episodes!

An absolute delight to watch you having so much fun. You have a wonderful personality and so much great energy and are no less blessed with great looks too. This from a 60 + lady who grew up in Halifax, like your mom did. What a special place Nova Scotia is, indeed. Even though I moved over 50 years ago and now live on another continent I will always remember and appreciate the Maritimes. I love the song: Farewell to Nova Scotia, the sea-bound coast[n 2], let your mountains dark and dreary[n 3] be. for when I am far away on the briny ocean tossed, Will you ever heave a sigh or a wish for me? (more stanzas on line)

Thanks for this trip Mike! I was also born in Halifax, like your mum. There used to be rail lines all around Nova Scotia. Sadly most of them have been removed. In 1966 I travelled back from Vancouver to Halifax with two toddlers. Again the service was first class, and affordable.What a grand land we live in. I’m still rooting for an upgraded train line coast to coast to coast, efficient and affordable.

Snuck in a little Sackville, New Brunswick at 9:49 I see haha! The people in the distance on the left are standing at a lookoff point we call "broken bridge" (because the old structure used to be a bridge!), it overlooks marshlands. It's a popular place for university students to hang out and take photos at. A breathtaking place at sunset, especially. I've even walked across the train bridge a few times (it's surreal at night!). I have a lot of memories there, so it's cool that it was included.

We used to call it The Ocean Limited, not sure why the limited but that’s what it was. My grandfather and my father worked at what used to be CNR or Canadian National Railway. My grandad was a radio operator originally using Morse Code to send messages along the line, he worked during WW2 as well. My Dad was a station agent , running a station at the very end of a line in a nice little rural community named Musquodoboit. The name means foaming to the sea probably because of the river which runs all the way to the coast.

I can't believe the connection car isn't full of bikes or something. :) It looks very much like what we called the gaurd's van on British trains in the 80s. Early in the decade, it carried oversized luggage; stuff you couldn't fit in the overhead racks. No doubt that was its traditional use. Theft must have been rare. Towards the end of the decade, there was little luggage as people were afraid of theft, but it would usually have 2 or 3 bikes even on a short trip.

I’d love to see this series in other countries that aren’t known as major travel destinations, this is so beautifully made and super entertaining! Absolutely amazing job on this series!!

Truly beautiful video Mike. My wife grew up in Chester NS. I have never been there but it's not from a lack of trying. Love your video.
